NOW THE ACCLAIMED HBO SERIES GAME OF THRONES—THE MASTERPIECE THAT BECAME A CULTURAL PHENOMENON Winter is coming. Such is the stern motto of House Stark, the northernmost of the fiefdoms that owe allegiance to King Robert Baratheon in far-off King’s Landing. There Eddard Stark of Winterfell rules in Robert’s name. There his family dwells in peace and comfort: his proud wife, Catelyn; his sons … wife, Catelyn; his sons Robb, Brandon, and Rickon; his daughters Sansa and Arya; and his bastard son, Jon Snow. Far to the north, behind the towering Wall, lie savage Wildings and worse—unnatural things relegated to myth during the centuries-long summer, but proving all too real and all too deadly in the turning of the season.
Yet a more immediate threat lurks to the south, where Jon Arryn, the Hand of the King, has died under mysterious circumstances. Now Robert is riding north to Winterfell, bringing his queen, the lovely but cold Cersei, his son, the cruel, vainglorious Prince Joffrey, and the queen’s brothers Jaime and Tyrion of the powerful and wealthy House Lannister—the first a swordsman without equal, the second a dwarf whose stunted stature belies a brilliant mind. All are heading for Winterfell and a fateful encounter that will change the course of kingdoms.
Meanwhile, across the Narrow Sea, Prince Viserys, heir of the fallen House Targaryen, which once ruled all of Westeros, schemes to reclaim the throne with an army of barbarian Dothraki—whose loyalty he will purchase in the only coin left to him: his beautiful yet innocent sister, Daenerys.

This was an excellent series
The books are way better that the television series – but I’m still waiting for the final books. Martin, please write it instead of making it up for tv.
I know this is a popular book and TV show, I just don’t care for the brutality, though I recognize the times were indeed brutal and unforgiving.
Although I think that this is an excellent series of books, I actually wouldn’t recommend them to any new readers. The series is unfinished and it seems likely that it will never be completed. If you’re like me (borderline obsessive) and you need to have completed things, this will drive you mad.
But for those intrepid souls who want to forge …
This is the only book I have ever read that the minute I was done I reread it. I just could not believe what I had read. I still recommend to people who’ve only watched the series, as once again books are so much better than films. And I love movies!
Game of thrones is the king of all fantasy novels. It brings dynamic characters to life and provides plot you can “chew” on. It reads like a mystery novel hidden inside the greatest fantasy world ever created.
Good character development. Slow at times.
Fantastic story with many interesting and fully-formed characters. This is a whole world of intrigue, horror, fantasy, action, love, you-name-it-you-got-it.
Where the hell are the rest of the books George???? Get off your butt and publish them already!! I love the HBO adaptation of the books, but I crave the feel of the pages in my fingers as I delve into the world you have created…. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE finish the printed series soon!!!
I’m sure way too much has already been said about GoT… for me, it was tough to get into it at first. I tend to latch onto main characters and in this series, nobody is safe. That said, I did stick with it and have wound up really enjoying the story throughout the series. I love that virtually no character is a pure hero or a pure villain. Even …
The only reason I didn’t give “Game of Thrones” a 5 star rating is that it is incomplete. The HBO series has continued the saga and is satisfying some of the unanswered questions of the books. The characters, the plot twists, the enemies and imagination are so absorbing, they leave you thinking about them long after you close the book.
I read the entire series of books through my lending library, but would like to own to read again!
The best books ever!!!!
Excellent series.Hope he finishes it.
this whole series is too violent.
The seven kingdoms, united under one ruler, have lived a life of peace and comfort since King Robert took the throne. But nothing is ever as it seems. Within the king’s court there is murder and treason, with no one aware of what is really going on. Across the seas, the last remnants of the previous royal family gather forces to reclaim their …
I’m probably the last human on earth to read this book. It started out slow, but it quickly got my attention and then I was hooked. I fell in love with Jon Snow right away, and I knew Dany would rise, but even though I had the two main characters pegged, it was still a good read. And when there be dragons…I’m sold.
Martin does a great job of …
This is certainly a series that will keep you on your toes and always guessing. Not for the faint of heart.
Way better than the TV adaptation!
George . R. Martin built a world that combines Medieval fantasy with spine tingling action, blood and gore, and all in the name of power!
Martin shows in these pages that war is hell! Game of Thrones is a fantastic read for those who thrill to the pursuit of complete domination! Throw in some Dragons and you have the worlds most popular TV …
