NOW THE ACCLAIMED HBO SERIES GAME OF THRONES—THE MASTERPIECE THAT BECAME A CULTURAL PHENOMENON Winter is coming. Such is the stern motto of House Stark, the northernmost of the fiefdoms that owe allegiance to King Robert Baratheon in far-off King’s Landing. There Eddard Stark of Winterfell rules in Robert’s name. There his family dwells in peace and comfort: his proud wife, Catelyn; his sons … wife, Catelyn; his sons Robb, Brandon, and Rickon; his daughters Sansa and Arya; and his bastard son, Jon Snow. Far to the north, behind the towering Wall, lie savage Wildings and worse—unnatural things relegated to myth during the centuries-long summer, but proving all too real and all too deadly in the turning of the season.
Yet a more immediate threat lurks to the south, where Jon Arryn, the Hand of the King, has died under mysterious circumstances. Now Robert is riding north to Winterfell, bringing his queen, the lovely but cold Cersei, his son, the cruel, vainglorious Prince Joffrey, and the queen’s brothers Jaime and Tyrion of the powerful and wealthy House Lannister—the first a swordsman without equal, the second a dwarf whose stunted stature belies a brilliant mind. All are heading for Winterfell and a fateful encounter that will change the course of kingdoms.
Meanwhile, across the Narrow Sea, Prince Viserys, heir of the fallen House Targaryen, which once ruled all of Westeros, schemes to reclaim the throne with an army of barbarian Dothraki—whose loyalty he will purchase in the only coin left to him: his beautiful yet innocent sister, Daenerys.

Loved it!
Just kidding on the “Happily Ever After” you never know when the next death is around the corner.
Great story that hooks you a little more with each character. Not your typical sci fi and fantasy novel where magic always saves the day; but one that adds a more realistic slant to the action. The story line / series is so long, however, that I found myself actually losing interest.
I recently reread this after loaning it to a friend (who fell in love with it, as almost everyone does). Fans of the show should never sleep on the books, which expand on those backstories, battles, and scenes of intrigue in even more detail than any show ever could. Grab a copy now!
Some great writing. So much better then the show which is great also. Much more imaginative. Great characters building . one of my favorite authors martin is a genius and not afraid of upsetting readers with unexpected twists and plot changes.
Great read. Characters well developed. Enjoyed the books immensely
Epic story. Prepare to be amazed. Not for the faint of heart.
Amazing world building, stunning characters, and surprising action. So well written. Page turner.
Loved these books
What a world it would be if George R. R. Martain had created it. Read the books before watching the HBO series. How he can create so many characters and stay true to their voices throughout the story is inspireing. Great story!
Great book in a great series. I recommend this book for anyone. Interested in fantasy fiction, long term complex plots.
I really enjoyed this novel and look forward to reading the rest in this series. This is an all encompassing, fantastic novel, in which Martin creates a vividly detailed alternate world. In this world, there are 3 main groups: the Others who live in the frigid snowlands, the Dothraki who resemble American Plains Indians, and the Kingdoms of …
Must admit I watched the HBO show before I read the book. So I could not mark unpredictable. But it was tedious. Not in a way that I minded were I stoned. At least he didn’t describe every berry on a bush like Tolkien. I was worried. Aside from the countless titles, the characters were captivating. In all ways possible no one came across as a true …
The only thing I found difficult about this series was the number of characters and trying to keep them straight – I did finish all five books and enjoyed them – waiting for the next
The series has twists and turns. Don’t fall in love with a character because he/she may be the next to die!
I am going to miss the world of the 7 kingdoms when GOT is over for good. But it was a nice diversion while it lasted. The author definitely kept you engaged and wanting more. All stories must end at some point. It is time for this one to go. But the beauty of books is that you can go back to book one and start over again. Each time you will …
Intense, not for the faint hearted… it took me three tries to read it because I kept getting shocked by the extreme events… the whole series starts at maximum horrificness and stays there… I had to stay braced throughout for the next ordeal… I would think I was getting inured to the horror, yet the author would repeatedly devastate me. I’m …
One of the greatest works of our day and age. Even if you have seen the TV series this story remains magical. Very detailed and brilliantly written. Can’t praise this book enough.
This is a story about a land where there are 7 kingdoms, and many people who want to rule them. Right now there is one King. There are lords that rule the other areas of the kingdoms, but they all bow to one King. There is magic, dragons, lords, ladies, princes, princesses, soldiers, sorcerers, and seers. In this land, summers and winters can …
What can anyone say? It’s a terrific series!
