“One of the best series in the history of fantasy.”—Los Angeles Times
Winter is coming. Such is the stern motto of House Stark, the northernmost of the fiefdoms that owe allegiance to King Robert Baratheon in far-off King’s Landing. There Eddard Stark of Winterfell rules in Robert’s name. There his family dwells in peace and comfort: his proud wife, Catelyn; his sons Robb, Brandon, and Rickon; his daughters Sansa and Arya; and his bastard son, Jon Snow. Far to the north, behind the towering Wall, lie savage Wildings and worse—unnatural things relegated to myth during the centuries-long summer, but proving all too real and all too deadly in the turning of the season.
Yet a more immediate threat lurks to the south, where Jon Arryn, the Hand of the King, has died under mysterious circumstances. Now Robert is riding north to Winterfell, bringing his queen, the lovely but cold Cersei, his son, the cruel, vainglorious Prince Joffrey, and the queen’s brothers Jaime and Tyrion of the powerful and wealthy House Lannister—the first a swordsman without equal, the second a dwarf whose stunted stature belies a brilliant mind. All are heading for Winterfell and a fateful encounter that will change the course of kingdoms.
Meanwhile, across the Narrow Sea, Prince Viserys, heir of the fallen House Targaryen, which once ruled all of Westeros, schemes to reclaim the throne with an army of barbarian Dothraki—whose loyalty he will purchase in the only coin left to him: his beautiful yet innocent sister, Daenerys.
“Long live George Martin . . . a literary dervish, enthralled by complicated characters and vivid language, and bursting with the wild vision of the very best tale tellers.”—The New York Times

What else is there to say but FINISH IT!!
Excellent characters and plot lines
Great series but Mr Martin needs to stop running off on all his tangents and finish the next book in the series. Really the length of time since the ending of the last book is ridiculous.
AN amazing series! Kept me completely enthralled.
The first three in the series are classics. As the books go on and it took longer and longer between each to write, it is apparent that GRRM changed his mind on the direction and some major plot points. Books 4 and 5 do not move the story along at all. Characters are introduced in books 4 and 5 just to kill them off, in an failed attempt to …
Simply amazing! I dreamt about them as I was reading this series. Read it again and felt the same way.
Just watch the show. The first few books are great but the farther you get in to them the less direction there seems to be. By the time I was done I was glad they were over. Would not return to read the final book if he ever finishes it.
One of the best series. Enjoyed it immensely. Highly recommend it.
Wonderful character development. So many characters, at times difficult to keep track. Story development is also very well done. Reminds me much of many of the desolate Victorian novels i’ve read in the past. Loved every minute reading each book . Took me most of the summer but worth it. Not for the squeamish because there is lots of blood and …
Amazing reading. Can’t recommend it enough!!!
Get ready to enter into George R.R. Martin’s worlds. Very well written! Worlds where knights and kings battle, dragons are born and no kingdom is safe. Just when you think you have a hero to cheer for you’re forced to re-think it all. Enjoy!
another one of my favorite authors
I cant wait until the 6th Book comes out!
The story and characters are excellent but the tedious description and at times unclear storyline ruins it. One of the only time I’ve ever said: “Better watch it than read it”
One of the best series I have read ! My only criticism is that sometimes George Martin drags out a storyline .
The best in the fantasy genre.
Excelent
An adventure in reading unlike any other.
I wish George R.R. Martin would finish the series!
Not a huge fantasy person, but I loved this book
