This was the latest installment of the Spinsters Guild ! I absolutely love this series and this book was no exception. Lady Amelia’s fall from a tree when she was younger left her with a limp! The ton punish anyone who doesn’t appear to be perfect and are exceptionally cruel to Amelia. Lord Montegue is a rogue and cad. When Lord Davidson approaches him and blackmails him he has no choice but to do what is required. Hence the title of the book. This was a heartfelt and heartbreaking story that is all too common of how the disabled are treated by society. I love Mrs Smithton and the care and support she gives “her girls “. This book like all Rose Pearson’s books is well written , original and has a HEA! I highly recommend this book and this series. If you like regency romance this is the book, series and author for you!

A Foolish Wager is book 4 in Rose Pearson’s Spinsters Guild series. So often in Regency Romance the people and period are romanticized and the problems of the era are glossed over. However, Rose Pearson with her Spinsters Guild series tackles the thorny question of what happens to women who are outside society’s norm of beautiful and accomplished. A Foolish Wager is the story of another of the Spinsters Guild members transformation from hiding in the shadows to proudly facing down the naysayers to make a place for herself in society. It is a delightful tale of a young lady standing up for what she believes and loving whom she chooses. And once again the man she loves becomes a better person simply because he has come to know her.
Rose Pearson shows us another not so pretty side of Regency England and what could happen if a woman has friends and support to become the star she is meant to be. There is the happily ever after we demand in all our historical romances. Yet, in the tradition of the great Jane Austin, there is a lesson to be learned before true love can succeed!
I highly recommend you read A Foolish Wager! Rose Pearson does not disappoint!

This is book # 4 in the Spinsters Guild. It can
be read as a stand-alone.
An enjoyable, recommended read.
I volunteered to read A Foolish Wager.
Thanks to the author via Booksprout. My opinion
is voluntary and my own.
This story is the age old game of men playing games with women. Unfortunately, this time Oscar gets caught, not only playing the game, but so does his heart. Lady Amelia is destined for spinsterhood with her limp, but a group of women help her self esteem. This story is delightful, but I think Amelia forgives too easily. Oscar wasn’t made to pay with some serious time away from her. This would have done her self esteem much better. This story is worth a smile and a delightful time caught in a book.
Nice book with an interesting heroine. 3.5 stars
A Foolish Wager is a nice romance with an interesting heroine.
Lady Amelia Ferguson fell from a tree when she was young and broke her leg. It did not heal properly, thereby leaving her with a limp. Consequently, as she matured, she was considered “imperfect” in the eyes of the Ton and ridiculed and ignored. Through the years her self confidence hit rock bottom.
Lord Oliver Montague is well known for being a roue’. He makes a bet with his cronies to romance Lady Amelia – which turns into blackmail as he discovers he does not want to hurt the lady.
I liked the heroine. She had been battered down by her family and the Ton, but managed to find the inner strength to keep going. Many people know what it is like to be judged for their looks and/or infirmities and not their character and that made this character especially poignant. It is the exact same thing that has been true in any society throughout the ages.
Lord Oliver comes off as pretty dastardly and shallow at first but I think there is a nice character arc throughout the story of how he changes. I would have however, like to have seen a little more introspection and remorse from the hero. It would have made his rise to hero and conversion more believable.
I very much like Rose Pearson’s stories. She usually has good characters, good flow, good dialogue, nice clean stories and a definite happy ending. This book did not disappoint on any of these counts.
I do still find technical issues. Sentences ending improperly with prepositions, for this type of genre, still tends to be an issue. For example, “….whom he ha never been introduced to…” SHOULD be “… to whom he had never been introduced…” or “…Oliver found it difficult to come up with something to say that Lady Amelia might respond to.” instead of “… Oliver found it difficult to come up with something to say to which Lady Amelia might respond.”
One of the worst offenders is “…. which I fear I shall never be free from.” Not only does it end improperly with this preposition, you don’t even NEED the ‘from’.
Also, same word usage only a paragraph or two apart. That is too redundant. These may be mainly issues with the editing. The author might need to change editors or hire perhaps a more experienced editor.
All in all though, another enjoyable book from Ms. Pearson. I look forward to the next in the series!

I love the book and all of the books in the series! Lady Amelia a young lady with a limp is shun by the Ton is pursued by Lord Montague a rogue and cad up to this point… He makes a wager with Lord Davidson who is blackmailing him into doing it. He is to get Lady Amelia to fall in love with him and then walk away… I recommend you read this lovely book and see the outcome and how exactly it all comes about.
A story that tore at my heart with the heroine having a small disability that brought cruel judgement from society. Amelia had a small limp from breaking her leg as a youth and that is all anyone could see. Not the lovely girl she was inside and out, that truly needed someone to care about her. Her life had not been full of love.
When she meets Oliver, she is warned he is a rogue and to stay away. Unfortunately, he is just that or has been and is forced into a bet to kiss Amelia and have her declare she loved him.
But what happens when that cad actually sees her for more than what the Ton does? Will he break Amelias heart but win his bet?
A sweet story of just how much one can endure and know good can often arise when least expected…

Highly Recommend A Foolish Wager – very heartwarming and a fun read!
This review is for A Foolish Wager (The Spinsters Guild Book 4) by Rose Pearson . I have enjoyed all the regency books by Ms. Pearson and this story is no exception. This is a warm, heartwarming, and clean story of a soon to be spinster with an injured leg and a gentleman who courts her on a bet. The characters are well developed and likable. The book is a fast read and will be enjoyed by anyone who appreciates a great romance and clean regency read.
Enjoyed the story. Good book.
12-year-old Lady Amelia had climbed a tree and her governess wanted her down she finally started coming down she slipped and fell breaking her leg badly, leaving her with a lamp. As she started her second season her uncle informed her that she needed to find a husband no ifs ands or buts about it she had a larger dowry and she wasn’t bad to look at according to her uncle. Her first season had been a disaster since all anyone could look at was her lamp. Her companion Mrs. Peter’s told her she had a plan. They were to call upon Lady Smithton who would help her find a husband. As usual she meets a gentleman the gentleman makes a mess of everything and you have to read the book to discover what happens. Three books so far in the Spinster’s Guild are somewhat repetitious and girl meets boy problems between them then happily ever after. It’s a quick read only 13 chapters and it’s delightful…
Lady Amelia Ferguson fell from an apple tree and seriously and permanently hurt her leg when she was a young girl and now she walks with a limp. Because of her disability , London society does not place any value on her. Lady Amelia wants to marry for love. Her Father is dead and her uncle who is now in control wants her to marry as soon as possible. Amelia seeks help from Mrs. Smithton and becomes a member of the Spinsters guild. Lord Oliver Montregue has no interest in marriage so when he is blackmailed by Lord Davidson he must pursue lady Amelia but in the process will he fall in love with her? This is an emotional and heartwarming romance by Rose Pearson and a great addition to the Spinsters Guild series.

I absolutely loved the book! It’s another great installment of The Spinster’s Guild Series. It was a real page-turner from the very beginning all the way to the end of the book. I was on the edge of my seat waiting to see what would happen for Oliver and the Lady Amelia. The story is well written, and the characters are wonderful and engaging. You really get to know the personalities of each one of the characters. Oliver sure doesn’t make a very likeable hero for most of the book, but he does manage to redeem himself in the end. A sweet romantic happily ever after ending for Oliver and Amelia. The book was a pleasure to read, and I look forward to reading the next adventure of The Spinster’s Guild.
Spoiler:
Lady Amelia had given up hope of ever finding someone who would love her for herself. A cripple, due to a fall as a young girl, had made her the ridicule of the ton.
Oliver Montague, a rouge who flitted from debutant to debutant would finally meet his match in Lady Amelia. Would she be the one who could turn him from rogue into marriage material or would he win the wager?

Lord Montague is a rogue, famous for his conquers in the ton. One of these affairs was known for a man who intended to earn some money making a bet.
Lady Amelia fell off a tree when she was a child and has suffered terrible pain in her leg ever since, causing her to limp.
The book is well-written but a bit slow at least at the beginning. It is a bit repetitive when referring to her limp and her injured leg. The people from the ton were really horrible to her. I like what Lord Havisham did to resolve the situation. I would have liked a scene where the villain of the story knew about his lack of fortune.
Three and a half stars.
This is in the spirit of 10 Things I Hate About You where a deal is struck to seduce the heroine, and the hero falls in love with her, and then has to extricate himself from the bet because it’ll make his love for her look ingenuine. In this case, I don’t really see what the problem is. Yes, a bet was made, but our hero isn’t getting anything out of the bet, nor was he even there when the bet was made. Granted, the hero gets blackmailed into trying to follow to it. Also, the hero actually had interest in her before the bet was made (that point got tossed out the window when the pivotal point came). So, I don’t really get why Amelia cared about the bet, other than Oliver really didn’t phrase his letter very well. The other problem I had with the story was that at pivotal point all the way to the end of the book, the characters suddenly all get excessively melodramatic and even Oliver gets especially flowery in his language, to the point of sounding effeminate. It was like the author had been editing through to tone the story down, and then ran out of time at that point and just hit publish. Before the pivotal point though, the characters were both perfect. Oliver came off as the reforming womanizer, obsessed with Amelia and his growing interest in her felt genuine the entire way through (never once did it feel like he was acting on following the bet). And Amelia came off as the shy dis-spirited girl, just beginning to pluck up her courage to face the world. I really did need a scene where she faces her uncle. This is a clean read. I personally would have liked a little bit of heat from it. What’s a romance without even a little kissing? The period setting felt authentic, though the spinster’s guild itself felt awkward and too contrived (though I did like the idea of it). In all, A Foolish Wager is a sweet, clean romance and a light read with likeable leads.
Great, clean Regency romance
When first we practice to deceive… what’s the rest of that quote? This was a good book with a bit of dung for a hero; that is until he gets his just deserts. Lord Montague enters into a wager, unwillingly, yet goes forward with the seduction of Amelia’s affections. Through mishaps and rude behaiors (of others) they are drawn together and we (the readers) smile, cheer, growl and howl through it all. Good clean, regency romance.
