Six years ago, to the outrage of her family and the delight of London gossips, Lady Helen Dehaven refused to marry the man to whom she was betrothed. Even more shockingly, her refusal came on the heels of her scandalous behavior: she and her betrothed were caught in a most compromising position. Leaving her reputation in tatters and her motivations a mystery, Helen withdrew to a simple life in a … a little village among friends, where her secrets remained hers alone.
For reasons of his own, Stephen Hampton, Lord Summerdale, is determined to learn the truth behind the tangled tale of Helen’s ruin. There is nothing he abhors so much as scandal – nothing he prizes so well as discretion – and so he is shocked to find, when he tracks Helen down, that he cannot but admire her. Against all expectations, he finds himself forgiving her scandalous history in favor of only being near her.
But the bitter past will not relinquish Helen’s heart so easily. How can she trust a man so steeped in the culture of high society, who conceals so much? And how can he, so devoted to the appearance of propriety, ever love a fallen lady?
Editorial Reviews
”A Fallen Lady is a gently moving story in which there is no overarching plot or major action; the romance IS the story and it’s by turns funny, tender and incredibly poignant… A compelling and beautifully written story about characters I came to genuinely care about.” – All About Romance
“For readers who enjoy a cathartic, emotional read.” – Dear Author

Six years ago, Lady Helen’s life ended. Ruined in the eyes of society, she retreats to a small village, hoping to start over…as much as that is possible for a ruined woman in regency England. However, then her past reappears in the form of Stephen Hampton, Lord Summerdale.
This story is simply beautiful. Both main characters almost jump off the page. They feel so real, so life-like that you cannot help but shed tears with them as they fight the demons of their past and risk everything to reclaim the happiness that was denied them.
Still, despite deep emotions that make you reach for the tissues, this is not a depressing story, but rather one to encourage us to never give up because it is well worth it. On top of that, Lady Helen’s friend Marie-Anne is a very refreshing character, bringing a little humor to the story. She made me laugh more than once with her direct and rather unconventional view of the world.
A wonderful read!
I happened to love this book. The story line was out of the norm and had a great bunch of twists and turns. Excellent read.
One of the best books I have read in a long while. The story is so unusual and the characters are great… so real. Parts of the story are tragic, parts are tear-jerkers. It is definitely a deeper story than the “regular” HEA.
I would definitely recommend this book. You won’t be disappointed!
I knew I enjoyed Elizabeth Kingston’s writing, but A Fallen Lady has made me a total fangirl. This book had me ensnared. I couldn’t put it down. The author not only delivers a wonderful romance, she ties up every loose end in the loveliest of ways. This is such a satisfying story.
Wonderful
I liked the story, but did not like the love scenes. They were to graphic for me.
The book was a good read up until the end- I found myself wishing to hero would leave the heroine, get on with his life and let the woman wallow in her stupidity alone.
The your woman shunned by society and family finds the ability to care for herself in spite of her nightmares and fears related to a trauma. Stephen also has emotional issues from childhood and a lost love. Wonderful story of 2 people who need each other and to learn to deal with their pasts. The emotional and physical issues are handled extremely well in this romance. Both characters are strong and loving and are easy to become attached to. Loved this story.
Ugh. Turgid, boring and predictable.
Loved it.
It was a wonderful story
A delightful story and a little bit different story line from your normal regency romance.
Yadda, yadda, yadda. The plot and characters are average at best, no surprises here.
This book was a roller coaster of a read. The characters are wonderful and the story is great. It’s the type of book that ultimately makes you want to hug and shake some sense into the characters. They are so well written and relatable that they feel as if they are friends. There are ups and downs, twists and turns. I ran a range of emotions while reading this book: happy, sad, infuriated, frustrated, and suspense. There is truly not a dull moment in this book and it will keep you enthralled until the end. It was a great read and I really enjoyed it.
Enjoyable read. Characters grabbed my attention and emotions and frustrated me at the same time. A good escape!
I enjoyed it!
I always read the reviews of books. This is a spoiler. The woman in this book witnesses a terrible crime, was sexually assaulted and then rejected by her family. Someone reviewed and said that she should of been over the trauma by the time 7 years had past. Wow was that review wrong.
The author successfully walked me through the entire trauma, the process of her healing and her desire to love and welcome her husband. Amazing book. Don’t miss this one.
Good book, easy to read, enjoyable heroine.
AND a tiny plot twist, so that was fun.
Good read for a day at the beach
A time when women had few choices and their voices were often ignored. This tale provides a happy ending to someone so wronged. Great characterization. The story pulls at your heartstrings.
