From W. Bruce Cameron, the author of the New York Times and USA Today bestselling novel A Dog’s Purpose, which is now a major motion picture Lucas Ray is shocked when an adorable puppy jumps out of an abandoned building and into his arms. Though the apartment he shares with his mother, a disabled veteran, doesn t allow dogs, Lucas can t resist taking Bella home. Bella is inexplicably drawn to … home.
Bella is inexplicably drawn to Lucas, even if she doesn t understand the necessity of games like No Barks. As it becomes more difficult to hide her from the neighbors, Lucas begins to sneak Bella into the VA where he works. There, Bella brings joy and comfort where it is needed most.
After Bella is picked up by Animal Control because pit bulls are banned in Denver, Lucas has no choice but to send her to a foster home until he can figure out what to do. But Bella, distraught at the separation, doesn t plan to wait. With four hundred miles of dangerous Colorado wilderness between her and her person, Bella sets off on a seemingly impossible and completely unforgettable adventure home.
A classic story of unwavering loyalty and incredible devotion, A Dog s Way Home is a beautifully told, charming tale that explores the unbreakable bond between us and our pets. This fantastic and exhilarating journey of the heart is in the same tradition as the beloved bestseller, A Dog s Purpose.

Can’t believe I haven’t mentioned this one yet. Heartwarming story about the everlasting bond between a dog and her human. Coming out as a movie in January, 2019!
it was amazing
best book ever love Bella
I loved this book. Maybe it’s because I’m a dog person, but I thought that the story was wonderful. It’s told from the dog’s perspective which I found very interesting and creative. Even though you know that it’s a happily ever after story, the end will still bring you to tears.
Review for audio version:
While I realize that a dog’s intelligence is on par with a young child, at times I felt that I was being condescended to — and then the author would throw in a $20 word (like excruciating) that neither a dog nor a child would understand.
I think I would have appreciated the herculean feat of Bella’s journey more had I known that Durango was 400 miles away from Denver before the last few “pages” of the story. This tidbit could have been mentioned when the foster home was introduced.
I imagine that this story made a very tense and exciting movie.
Anthropomorphism. Funny, sad, life affirming story of a lost dog finding his way home.
As I began reading about Bella, I thought it might be a good read aloud book for grandkids. It is told first person by the dog and how she perceives people things. Clever. But not for kids. Two of the characters are husband/husband and a couple of the men Bella meets use some pretty strong language. Not for kids, in my mind, but it was a short easy read and I’m glad that I read it.
The Book is a wonderful read Mr. Cameron has a way with dogs and writing wonderful stories about them. He makes you cry then on the next page he may have you roaring with laughter. I have a hard time putting his work down. Excellent job again!
This heartwarming tale was a page turner. Spoiler alert: the dog doesn’t die at the end. That was important to me as a dog lover. I enjoyed the voice author Cameron imparted on the dog, Bella. It was believable (even given that Bella narrates the story) and what I imagine a dog thinking. Of course, no one knows what any dog is thinking, exactly, but I’d like to believe that this nailed it.
I don’t think I have the words to describe my feelings to this book. I cried, laughed and again cried throughout the book. It was wonderful and having read the story from a dog prospective was very interesting and something I have not done before, but I surely liked it. There sometimes that I was wandering way the plot have twisted in that direction but at the end it all was cleared and I loved the journey, and felt like I had taken one myself.
I always loved dogs, and wanted to have one. This book made me love and want one even more. In my opinion, the author described a dog not only as an animal but as a friend, colleague and something charming that we as human beings do not appreciate enough.
If I wanted to summarize the experience of reading and the deepest message of the book I would quot the following line: “If a dog couldn’t trust humans, how was life even possible?”
Wow. What a strong, beautiful and deep thought.
I want to thank W. Bruce Cameron for giving us the opportunity to see the world around us with a different eye, and for his deep love for dogs that made him write something so exciting and lovely and that he was able share his love with us and teach us why dogs are needed in our lives.
Thank You 🙂
I would recommend this book to everyone, even if you don’t like dogs or pent in general. I think, and truly believe this book can change your mind.
It wood be a good book for preteens except for unneccesary gay couple, inappropriate use of the Lord’s name, and couple shaking up.
A Dog’s Way Home is another great story told from the viewpoint of the dog . It starts out with her under an old house with her mother , brothers , sisters , and a bunch of cats. Bella then gets rescued by Lucas and has a wonderful life. You quickey grow to love Lucas and his mom. Then trouble once again strikes for poor Bella who is a mixed breed puppy . She is labeled a pit bull by a very mean and nasty dog catcher in Denver, where they are illegal. Between a greedy real estate developer and the dog catcher they make life impossible for Lucas & Bella. Bella is threatened with death by Animal Control if she stays in Denver . So Lucas then does the only thing he knows what to do to save her. He contacts his friend who runs a rescue group. She finds a foster home for Bella 400 miles away until Lucas can find a place to live where she will be allowed. Bella grows impatient waiting on him to come rescue her and only knows that she must Go Home to her person and escapes. From there she embarks on a long, adventure filled journey that takes years to get back to Lucas. You will scream , cheer, and cry your whole way through this book. I could not put this book down. In fact I read it faster than I have any other book because I just had to know what was going to happen next. If you love dogs, you will love this book. It is such a beautiful realistic story, and i loved it so much that I ordered my own copy. I will treasure and reread for many years to come.
This was a cute story. You really virginity does thinking even though I knew they contemptible solve like we do.
I have been reading the The Dog’s Purpose books for children, with my daughter. When I saw this book, I thought it would be great to read the grown-up version of his stories. I was not disappointed at all. It was an easy to read book that was entertaining yet had me wiping my eyes on occasion. Spoiler Alert: Of course, everyone loves a happy ending so I recommend this book for anyone who loves animals and wants a quick read that is enjoyable.
This book is written from the dog’s perspective which adds some humor. It also sheds light on some important social issues.
I am looking forward to seeing this one on the big screen! Great story and being an advocate for some of the mixes that get labeled as “vicious pit bulls” is a great way to get awareness out there. I was rooting for poor Bella the whole way! Might even be better than A Dogs Purpose, although I have only seen that movie but never finished that book. That will be next on my list 🙂
great book
Everyone needs a “Bella” in their life. Dog’s are family members just like children.
I loved this book! I found it easy to read and comical! I liked how the author gave Bella ways to describe everyone she made contact with, then she stuck with that self description. Written through a dog’s eyes, the tough journey to do ‘go home’ and get back to her *person was Bella’s main goal. Well written.
I loved that it was told from the dog’s point of view. It was amazing.
