A Dog’s Purpose—the #1 New York Times bestseller—is now a major motion picture!Based on the beloved bestselling novel by W. Bruce Cameron, A Dog’s Purpose, from director Lasse Hallström (The Cider House Rules, Dear John, The 100-Foot Journey), shares the soulful and surprising story of one devoted dog (voiced by Josh Gad) who finds the meaning of his own existence through the lives of the humans … meaning of his own existence through the lives of the humans he teaches to laugh and love. The family film told from the dog’s perspective also stars Britt Robertson, KJ Apa, John Ortiz, Peggy Lipton, Juliet Rylance, Luke Kirby, Pooch Hall and Dennis Quaid. Heartwarming, insightful, and often laugh-out-loud funny, A Dog’s Purpose is not only the emotional and hilarious story of a dog’s many lives, but also a dog’s-eye commentary on human relationships and the unbreakable bonds between man and man’s best friend. This moving and beautifully crafted story teaches us that love never dies, that our true friends are always with us, and that every creature on earth is born with a purpose.

This book will always have me looking at dogs differently. Seeing how they act will always make me question if they have lived before. It will have me wonder if they were once one of my beloved dogs.Cameron wrote such a heartfelt story. It comes of as if this is a complete fact. That dogs are reborn and sometimes our own beloved dogs come back to you! In this first book the dog as four lives. Toby, Bailey, Ellie, and Buddy. And we follow him through all his highs and lows of life. We get to see life through the eyes of a dog and it is so believable. Is this a sad story? In my opinion, no. It is a feel good story. Yes you will cry, but you will also laugh! You will want to hug you dog, and if you don’t have a dog? You’ll want to go adopt one! Cameron even teaches you things in this book. You learn the effects of a dog being left in a hot car, and how, possibly, dogs think and why they may act the way they do.If you have a dog, if you love dogs, ever had one! I recommend this book to you!
I read the book and watched the movie with my siblings. It was so sad, but such a good story and gives you a great idea of how the people felt. It was very descriptive. I got very sad because of what it is about, so if you have a problem with animal death or something this is not the book for you but if you like this type of stuff even though you know it is sad then go ahead, it is a really great book. Five stars from me!
A must read for animal lovers
This was a great read but not for everyone. You have to be an animal lover to sit through it.
I think this is a great book i cry so much while reading it
This was such a heart rendering book that pulled at every emotion from sad, happy and at times funny. We all felt it was such an emotional read that at times it had some of us in tears. Told from the perspective of the dog who lived three different lives. From living with a dog hoarder, a faithful best man’s friend that many of us could relate to and a service dog. It was an enlightening story that showed just how dedicated our dogs are, no matter what the circumstances are. They are loyal, loving and truly a man’s best friend.
If you’ve ever lost a dog, this book will bring you much comfort during the difficult times while you mourn their loss. It makes us want to believe that our best friend served his purpose while with us, in the best possible way he could, with what seemed like such a short time on this earth. It was soothing to read when after living his first life the dog is reborn as a puppy with memories of his previous life that he carries with him while he finds another purpose to fulfill. In the end, everything comes full-circle which helps when grieving the loss of a dog.
I am a dog owner and have had many dogs but like Bailey in the book, we all seem to have that one special dog that we just bonded with. Mine was Harley. I’m so grateful he came into my life and I feel blessed that I was able to spend thirteen glorious years with him. He was constantly on my mind while I read this and I mentioned it at the meeting, and even though it’s been three painful years since he passed, I began choking up, just mentioning his name and I had to abruptly end my discussion about him. After reading this book, I want to believe he is now giving the same love and loyalty to another family that he gave me.
For me, the ending was extremely sad and I did cry heavy tears when I finished reading it. With that said, it is a book that I will not soon forget. I know it will stay with me for years to come. A must read for every dog lover.
A Dog’s Purpose makes your heart wretch and tear into a billion pieces….
This book was so good. If you have fur babies be warned it’s a wrench on your emotions I cried because of sadness I cried because of happiness but all in all I couldn’t put it down. If your prone to emotions then have a box of tissues handy. Fantastic book
Very good to curl up with
I read this one and also the follow up, A Dog’s Journey. Both were very hard to put down. Very enjoyable reads.
This book takes you on a rollercoaster ride of emotions. The dog lover will be torn, and battered by the story, so expertly tied together, that at times you feel a lack of air to breathe. I have endlessly promoted this most excellent book.
Loved it. will read all the authors books.
This is one of my all time favorite books. The story is told from the dog’s point of view and is hysterical when the dog tells about what people do. Things that seem normal to us, are a mystery or strange to the dog. As dog lives are so much shorter than human lives, the dog in the story dies and comes back as a different dog several times. In each new life, he uses what he learned in his previous life. If you have or have had a dog in your life, you will have a better understanding and a greater appreciation of him after you read this book,
Loved the dog!
It’s been a long time since I’ve read a more enjoyable book!
A Dog’s Purpose was our bookclub selection for this month, and I have to say I finished it the same day I got it.
I laughed out loud, and honestly, I cried real tears.
Giving nothing away, I just have to say, do yourself a favor and read this one.
It’s fantasy of course, but, it’s a lovely fantasy.
I give it 5 out of 5 stars
What a great and unique story, laughed and cried!
When I started this book I was actually going to put it down because I wasn’t finding it very interesting in the first few chapters but I kept reading and the book picked up a little and I began really enjoying it. This book is about a dog that gets reincarnated several times into different lives, each time wondering and finding out what his purpose is. It really is a very good look into what dogs are and what they mean to those of us who are dog owners and lovers. After fully reading this book I believe all dog lovers will love it.
one of the best books I’ve ever read, but very sad!
It made me appreciate my little dog even more.
I loved reading this book. I was crying. Amazing
