A Dog’s Purpose—the #1 New York Times bestseller—is now a major motion picture!Based on the beloved bestselling novel by W. Bruce Cameron, A Dog’s Purpose, from director Lasse Hallström (The Cider House Rules, Dear John, The 100-Foot Journey), shares the soulful and surprising story of one devoted dog (voiced by Josh Gad) who finds the meaning of his own existence through the lives of the humans … meaning of his own existence through the lives of the humans he teaches to laugh and love. The family film told from the dog’s perspective also stars Britt Robertson, KJ Apa, John Ortiz, Peggy Lipton, Juliet Rylance, Luke Kirby, Pooch Hall and Dennis Quaid. A Dog’s Purpose is produced by Gavin Polone (Zombieland, TV’s Gilmore Girls). The film from Amblin Entertainment and Walden Media will be distributed by Universal Pictures. Screenplay by W. Bruce Cameron & Cathryn Michon and Audrey Wells and Maya Forbes & Wally Wolodarsky.
Heartwarming, insightful, and often laugh-out-loud funny, A Dog’s Purpose is not only the emotional and hilarious story of a dog’s many lives, but also a dog’s-eye commentary on human relationships and the unbreakable bonds between man and man’s best friend. This moving and beautifully crafted story teaches us that love never dies, that our true friends are always with us, and that every creature on earth is born with a purpose.
Bailey’s story continues in A Dog’s Journey, the charming New York Times and USA Today bestselling direct sequel to A Dog’s Purpose.

This book hit me straight in my heart. I have lost my beloved, Shadow just last Memorial Day of 2016. Shadow was a huge part of my life, and he passed at home just months short of celebrating his 15th birthday. I miss him every moment, of everyday.
On to the book. This book follows a dog that has many lives, many experiences, and a bittersweet ending. I cried during and long after this book. It is written from a dog’s perspective, which I absolutely loved. It’s sad, funny, and really pulled at my heart and soul. I blazed through this book in two days, and I even inspired my non-reading sister, who adores dogs, to read this book. She also laughed and cried throughout the book.
If you are a dog lover, or have lost a dog, I recommend this book. It gives me hope in finding my very loved and deeply missed, Shadow.
I hope to see you again my fat belly boy, Shadow. I miss you every moment, of everyday. August 18, 2001-May 31, 2016
I didn’t believe a novel written from a dog’s point of view could hold my interest. I was wrong. The book gave me a life lesson I won’t soon forget.
This was the type of book you couldn’t put down. You wanted to get to know the dogs. But, do expect to cry a few times.
I love dog stories and the idea they never leave you
What an endearing and heartwarming book, that was somewhat sad, but basically, just hilarious, as it is written from the dog’s point of view! I couldn’t put it down and now looking forward to reading A Dog’s Journey as soon as I can!
As a student, I hate reading. This infact made me stay up to 11 multiple times just hooked in the book. I cried multiple times so if you’re going to read it, expect to shed a few THOUSAND tears. Spoiler: The ending on Ethan just dying breaks my heart so bad and when the dog was put down in his 1st life I think.. 🙁
This is so good. If you love dogs, chances are high that you will love this book too. The storyline is unusual, and the ending is poignant and not for the reason I expected.
I bought the book because I got tired of being on the waiting list at my local library. The book ended up sitting by the couch for a few weeks because I got sick. The next thing I know is, it was on my Kindle because I picked the option from my library to automatically send a book to me when I was next on the waiting list. OMG….. I was sitting in bed reading and before I knew it I was over half way through the book. The next night I finished it. I cried and sobbed through several parts but kept on going because I had to know what happened next. W. Bruce Cameron is an amazing Author, to put so much into a book that makes you feel so much pure emotion is amazing. I now have more of his books on my to read list.
If you’ve been owned by a dog, or two or six, chances are you have lost one. This book will pull your heart strings.
Heartwarming and tearjerker and funny all in one book. If you love dogs and know they are family this ones for you.
A great book
I received this book as a Christmas gift because I love dogs. The book is written at a level appropriate for middle schoolers but is a fun, quick read for adults also. The story is told from the dog’s perspective which led me to imagine what my own pup would say or do. I recommend this to anyone who enjoys hearing about the amusing capers of our pets.
A Dog’s Purpose is the first installment in W. Bruce Cameron’s fiction, animal POV series titled A Dog’s Purpose. Initially, I wasn’t into this book. The simplicity of the writing is almost childlike as the narrator is a dog who is confused by human behavior and just wants to please in any way. However, animal reincarnation was an interesting spin that kept the story from stalling…and then the tears came for me about 2/3 of the way through. Finally, I was invested.
I didn’t love A Dog’s Purpose, but reading it made me love my own dog even more. He is napping on my lap right now after a long walk with a generous amount of sniffing stops and an icecube of chicken broth. I know a human wrote this book, and who even knows what really goes on in a dog’s head, but I feel even more motivated to make my pup as happy as he truly makes me .
My favorite quote:
“The job of a good dog was ultimately to be with them, remaining by their sides no matter what course their lives might take. All I could do now was offer him comfort, the assurance that as he left this life he was not alone but rather was tended by the dog who loved him more than anything in the whole world.”
W. Bruce Cameron’s A Dog’s Purpose series includes the following installments as of January 2017:
#1-A Dog’s Purpose
#2-A Dog’s Journey
Additionally, the following illustrated novels have been adapted for young readers:
Ellie’s Story
Bailey’s Story
Molly’s Story
Really sweet! Can’t wait to see the movie!!!
This is a great book i always read even tho its a long book! I recommend this book because it will make you cry it made me and if you love dogs much as me you should read this 🙂
This book does a great job of putting you in the driver’s seat of the dog’s perspective. I was skeptical at first but if your a dog lover and a avid reader, it’s a good time.
Loved!
