Harry Browning was a motherless guttersnipe, and the morning he came across the elderly Lord Preston clinging to a sheer rock face he didn’t believe in fate. But the fates have plans for Harry whether he believes or not, and he’s not entirely sure he likes them. As a reward for his bravery, and in an unusual moment of charity, miserly Lord Preston takes him on. He is taught to read, to manage the … manage the vast and crumbling estate, and to behave like a gentleman, but Harry knows that is something he will never truly be.
Already running from a dark past, his future is becoming increasingly complex as he finds himself caught in a tangled web of jealousy and revenge.
Temptation, in the form of the lovely Lady Clarinda Bow, is a constant threat to his peace of mind, enticing him to be something he isn’t. But when the old man dies his will makes a surprising demand, and the fates might just give Harry the chance to have everything he ever desired, including Clara, if only he dares.
And as those close to the Preston family begin to die, Harry may not have any choice.

Now, this is what I’m talking about!…What an exceptional book…It had it all…Great writing, unusual plot, twists and turns, JUST A FUN READ!…I didn’t see the ending coming, which was a bonus…BUY IT…READ IT…REJOICE…This isn’t your regular old predicable regency romance!!!
Very good book, every one of Emma Leach books I have read are great, this one really really good, I hope this recommendation will help.
I fell for Henry, after a sudden encounter he was given a chance to improve his life and the events that keep you turning the pages are the mystery, romance, murder. As always being drawn into Emma’s books you actually feel like you are there so you want to get to the end to see what is going to happen, yet you don’t want it to end.. Hats off to another great Edition.
This is my favorite book by this author.
Lovely story of British aristocracy showing compassion and fairness. Loved it
I’ve enjoyed all of the books I’ve read so far that have been written by Emma Leech. This was no exception. As I’ve come to expect, the story was interesting and well written. As I’ve said in other reviews of her books, this was another one that I couldn’t put down. I wanted so badly to find out what happened in the end but by the same token, didn’t want the book to end! There were a few surprises in this story I didn’t see coming!
I totally enjoyed this book. Finely developed characters and a great ending
I loved this one! I fell in love with the characters, almost all of them. I didn’t see it turning out the way it did.
Yes, there was romance, but it’s not all focused on that. I just loved it.
I would recommend it to any that love a good, heart warming mystery.
Interesting, great origin for the hero. Surprising and sweet
Never a dull moment! Very different from the typical romances of this era. I highly recommend it!
Excellent characters. Reveals the many twists and turns in the human stories of nobility and the poor.
Wonderful book as always with Emma V Leech, entertaining, funny, steamy and have a look at the Dictionnay of Vulgar English, WONDERFUL !! A MUST to read absolutly!. Thank you Emma.
I will read this book again, I liked it that much. Characters with moxy, villains with dastardly plans, challenges thrown by life, and laws with horrible consequences left me pulling for the characters in their attempts to do/be good. Courtships are clever, heirs aren’t who they seem, death comes in a variety of ways- a finely woven tangle.
Enjoyed this book very much. There are twist and turns with surprise near the end.
It was a joy to read, didn’t want to put it down
Enjoyed reading this book
I liked this since it was a bit different than the usual I enjoyed how the loose ends were tied up at the end.
This was a highly entertaining book. I couldn’t quit reading it till it was finished.
Did not want to put it down! Keep my interest!
A good romance novel set in the 1800s. Loved the characters and the unexpected twist in the story!
