I never knew. One minute I was flying high and the next I came crashing down so harshly the world shattered. It was all a lie.But then he came.He came with his dark eyes and his cutting words and his cruel, cruel stare.Grayson Rothburg. Recluse. Genius. Truth speaker. My friend, Gray. My real.My hero in disguise. He says I should move on. Change. And now he’s offered me a diversion, a way to help … offered me a diversion, a way to help me re-evaluate what’s left of me.
The trouble is, I don’t know how real that is either.
And I’m not sure I care.

What an amazing and disturbing read. Hannah’s loss leading her to need to feel again and Gray being the man who offers to help her reinvent herself. A dark tale and the first book in a new trilogy which ended with a cliffhanger. I so need to find out where they go next on their journey
A Distraction of Lies is the first in a new series by Charlotte E. Hart, and boy is it a whooper! Dark and mysterious, this is my first dive into Hart, and what can I say other than WOW.
Hannah Tanners life hasn’t been a cake walk, it hasn’t been much of anything really, but enough that she catches the eye of Grayson Rothberg. Grayson a keep to himself type of man, a loner and blunt to a fault, a man who is so intense it sets Hannah’s skin to prickle. What he offers her is something she has always wanted. A chance to learn about herself, to learn, to see, to find out what she really is…or at least what she could be.
This book left me with so many questions by the end, and that cliffhanger! There is so much heat in this book that I was so unsure what was going to happen next. It definitely keeps you guessing, the mystery of Gray is sure to feed into the next book. I can’t wait to get my hands on the next book!
*Trigger warning for some. There are some mild elements of abuse. Definitely a dark story line.*
An entertaining read that takes you on a never ending journey of the unexpected ups and downs and excitement. This book was mind blowing.
A Distraction of Lies by Charlotte Hart is the First book in the Truth and Lies Series. This starts the story of Hannah Tanners and Grayson ‘Gray’ Rothburg. Gray is a mystery who is a recluse which just adds to you wanting to know his story. Hannah world has just been taken away when she learns everything she thought she had has been a lie. Now she is at a lost, vulnerable and just trying to find herself again to move past the hurt and humiliation of it all. Then she meets the mysterious Gray who the brings out the women she wants to be in her. Hannah to has made Gray feel something he never thought either. This book just starts their story and it does leave you wanting so much more of it. So its a good book to get lost in and if like me you like the dark mysterious that keep a story going. Never knowing what was going to happen next. I do recommend this book and this author.
A Distraction of Lies is one of those stories that immediately sucked me in and held me fascinated throughout. Hannah’s life drastically changes in one night and the very foundations of her world are rocked, leaving her questioning her relationships and structure of her own life.
The dark undertones built like a haunting melody and whenever the mysterious, reclusive Grayson, appeared on the page, my heart rate increased with intrigue, and dare I say it, fear. He exudes danger and darkness. He’s like complicated conundrum, which filled my head for hours, trying to work him out. Like Hannah, I was powerless to Gray’s magnetic force that captivates and draws you in. Grayson’s own POV chapters, give us, the reader, tantalising bread crumbs of his thoughts and actions, increasing my curiosity to his enigmatic ways.
The connection that Hannah has with Grayson is explosively powerful and him stepping out of his comfort zones for her, is endearing. Hannah’s world as she knew it, may have shattered, but she shows great strength – she’s got backbone and just wants to experience something real. I really grew attached to her and I’m in her corner cheering her on.
It’s been ages since a new trilogy has had me chomping on the bit for the next book and I’m counting down the days until book 2 releases. Ms Hart has produced a thrilling, dark, suspense story that kept me on my toes and speeding through the pages, addicted to all things Hannah and Gray. I highly recommend one-clicking this enthralling book.
Distraction: a thing that prevents someone from giving full attention to something else. Extreme agitation of the mind or emotions..
Hannah’s very existence depends on it. The ultimate distraction from what?
Regret.
Feelings.
Deceit.
Life. Her life.
Hannah Tanner must find a new way to function as what she thought was real becomes quite the opposite. Through her discovery of the truth she meets Grayson Rothburg and with him as her guide she begins to feel what is real.
Charlotte E Hart has pushed the boundaries of my mind again. Every book I read I am hooked! This is a trilogy and now I must have #2!!
4.5 STARS
A Distraction of Lies is the first book in Truth and Lies. Wow what a story! There is a lot I want to say but I don’t want to reveal anything.
Hannah finds out the world she has been living in is one big lie! She never thought to find herself in this situation.
I am not sure how I feel about Grayson Rothburg. Grayson offers Hannah an opportunity to escape reality and she ends up taking it. I am not sure that was the kind of distraction that Hannah needs or even needed and in the end was it good for her.
The question is what will Grayson do? I guess we will have to wait for book 2 to find out more.
This book is the first book that I have read of Charlotte E Hart’s that she has written alone. The books that I have read is where she has co-written with another author. I will definitely read more of her books and I can’t wait for the second book in this series. Even though that will also have to end in a cliffhanger since this is a trilogy.
Oh and I did receive an ARC for this book but found out that it was on KU. So I read that version instead. Why not give the author a little somethin… somethin…. When I can.
(3 1/2 stars)
Have you ever finished a book and wondered what did you just finished? This book was like that for me. I am trying to find the right words to say. In the beginning I was intrigued and looking forward to the rest. Then the book became unrealistic to me. By the end of the book was lost because of the Hannah’s behavior. While I understood the reasoning, I couldn’t connect or relate with her. But Mr. Grayson Rothburg did peek my interest more at the end of the book than in the beginning. I want to know what he has been holding back. Will I read the next book in the series? Yes
Review So, a new one by Charlotte Hart? Yes, Please. I’m in need of something dark, decadent, and delicious.
Then I start reading and this SOOO isn’t what I was expecting.
A woman cheated on can be a dangerous thing. A woman cheated on with no way for recompense is a very dangerous thing..to the woman…as something breaks inside. Not knowing why, how many, what went wrong, if there were feelings..leaving her with a desire to change. To be a different person. To shout a big “Fuck you” to the old her that was trampled on.
A new life, a new you, that’s what Hannah wants and that’s what she’s going for. No more “playing it proper and safe”.
A decidedly different tale, mostly calm, not as dark as I imagined, at first anyways. The ending however, gah… I was torn. I love cliffy’s. I love anticipating the next part of the story. I can’t say what I want to say or you’ll have too many clues..
Just know that this is wonderfully well written, as Charlotte’s books always are. Know that it’s not what you’d expect..as Charlotte’s books always are. Know that you’ll be anxiously awaiting the next..
It was a very intriguing read, which I throughly enjoyed. I don’t know what to make of the characters just yet and I can’t wait to see where the story goes.
Here is a new series that has you turning the pages!
Hannah is a newly widowed woman who is just on the cusp of discovering things about herself. She’s lost, a little broken, and in need of guidance. Gray is a reclusive genius, but a man with secrets. Yet, he’s willing to be a mentor of sorts. This book is a series of deviated sexy twists and turns that unfolded as Hannah and Gray each made new discoveries. I was enthralled with their story and am anxiously waiting for more!
Charlotte E. Hart is in full effect with “A Distraction of Lies” (Truth and Lies Trilogy #1) Charlotte has left me bereft and wanting more NOW!
Hannah Tanner has had her world turned inside out. Her seemingly perfect world shattered when she learns the life she has been living was all a lie. Nothing seems real until she meets the reclusive and enigmatic Grayson Rothburg. Gray becomes a touchstone to Hannah, her “real” in the unreality of her current existence. With her new friend, she desires to be the woman she was before. Her pain is palpable and raw, and you can understand her wanting to escape.
Gray is a puzzle I can’t wait to solve! He is solitary, stoic, even cold and just wants to stay in his penthouse and create new pharmaceuticals in his lab for his company. For some reason, he does not want to be around crowds or other people.
The chemistry that hums between Gray and Hannah, and not acted upon, is enthralling! One particular chapter their connection was on fire, and I had to read it thrice! Why is he resisting her….what is this place he is taking her to…what repercussions are to come for them both with the addition of the mysterious Malachi. Ready for book 2 Charlotte!
A Distraction Of Lies (Truth and Lies Trilogy #1)
By Charlotte E. Hart
5 stars
A Distraction of Lies is the newest release from Ms Hart and what a beginning to this trilogy it is! Action from the very beginning and characters that you can’t decide if you should love or hate! There are unexpected twists and turns and a cliff hanger that makes you need the next book as soon as possible! Hannah and Gray are the main characters in this story and they each get their own POV chapters which are great especially for Gray! He is a complex character and I enjoyed trying to unravel him as the story went on! I might not have figured him out yet but I’m definitely in love with him!!
Based on the first book this trilogy is bound to be a hit with fans of this author and will definitely entice some new ones too!! I am extremely excited to read the next book! I can’t wait!!
There are so many parts to a woman, her future, her past and her now. For Hannah, her life is going to change and the embrace of this life is stunning as it unfolds.
For Grayson Rothburg, the woman he sees in a theatre box at the opera and the woman he digs into knowing, picks at him. He doesn’t want to be bothered. his life is currently all planned out, reclusive, finding that elusive medication that we wait to know more about..the mystery of Grayson collides with the otherness of Hannah.
Without saying more and risk spoiling the surprises that this book gives the reader, i have to say it pulled me in and I am intrigued into finding out what happens next.
Review of an arc copy.
An absolutely epic read!
I love Hannah she made me laugh quite a few times as well as feel for her throughout the story.
Gray is what I call a classic Ms Hart hero. I like him one minute then I don’t, then I love him, then I hate him and this goes around in circles until the end of the story.
I am left with so many questions right now. I can usually figure things out as I read but I have no clue what makes Gray tick. Had no idea what was going to happen next and for me that is a sign of seriously brilliant storytelling.
This isn’t going to be the book for everyone but if, like me, you enjoy a good dark and slightly disturbing read then this is going to be the book for you. I know I am seriously excited for the next part of this story, in fact I would quite like it now because I need to know what is going to happen!
I wasn’t sure what to expect going into this book, but it was so well done! This isn’t really dark, but it was really good! This story pulls you in from the very beginning and before you know it, you’ve reached the end! I can’t wait to read the next one in the series!!
From the first chapter of this book, I knew one thing for sure.
This was going to be quality writing.
I often enjoy the darker stories that shock you and make you gasp and curl your toes but quite often they aren’t deep or intense.
Don’t get me wrong, I occasionally only want to be dipping my big toe into the abyss. I mean, you can not permanently live in the darkest corner of your soul.
But this story is deep and you feel it all right from the beginning.
HANNAH
I feel for this woman and can relate to her on a personal level.
Her whole world changes in a second.
Everything she’s worked towards for so long has just shattered.
Everything she believed in, she’s now questioning.
Who is she? What has she become? What’s real?
I’ll be honest, she cracks a little. Maybe more than a little.
And I held my breath and dove into her self discovery alongside her.
I loved how she basically questioned every single thought she had to make sure she actually ‘felt’ what she was about to say.
No more fake. No more people-pleasing.
It’s something I’ve wanted to do for a long time, lol.
GRAY
From the very first look into this man’s head, I was intrigued. I was curious. And quite frankly I was turned on and craving his dick. Seriously.
There is something about this man that just demands your attention and obedience and I was more than happy to give it to him.
He’s not a man who entertains others ideas of what is right or wrong. He’s not a man to mince words. And he’s not a man that cares what is socially acceptable.
He is intense and dark with secrets. Nothing surprises or interests him anymore.
Until he spots Hannah across the theatre one night and can not look away.
He can’t seem to forget her either and it leads him out of his comfort zone completely for the first time in a very long time.
This man is just…I don’t really know how to describe him. But I want him. Naked. Now.
There are questions I need answers to.
#1 Why won’t he do what he’s craving inside to do? What exactly is he protecting her from?
#2 What’s gonny happen when he lets loose?
This story had me glued to my screen and I found I didn’t want it to end. I kept looking at the percentage left in in the bottom corner of the page, hoping that it would tell me I still had at least 75% left to go, lol.
SEX SCENES
Her hands grasp the sheets tighter, the gold chain lingering out to the side. I watch it moving as she does, glare at the fact that I can’t control it or her. Faster and faster his hand moves, the other one keeping her hip still under his assault. I can hear the sounds again now. Wet, thick sounds. She moans louder, making me push my dick down through my pants to ease the pressure. Damn thing wants anything but this separation. It wants inside her like those fingers are, her wet cunt wrapped around it. I grunt and widen my legs, straightening my back to ease the density building inside me, and glare harder as Dillon unbuttons his pants and begins shoving her around like the toy she’s becoming for him. A low growl reverberates out of me, the room I’m in seeming like a damn cage I can’t get out of all of a sudden. One move from me now, one knock on that window, and I can stop this, but I can’t get the vision of his dick ramming into her out of my mind. I lick my lips, teeth biting down on the corner of them, as I watch him line up and grip her hips harshly. An internal war rages like never before, making me question what the fuck I brought her here for. Distraction? This isn’t a distraction I’m used to. I normally relish it, revel in the visual and take the offer to fulfil my own needs, but this is interfering with something deep inside. It’s intrusive. She is. The groan that leaves me, as he runs the tip across her pussy, is enough for her to turn her head. She looks at the black Perspex, heavy lids and a panting mouth staring right at me even though she can’t see me. Everything stops for a second or two, including my mind, until I see her close her eyes and moan again. My spine goes rigid, hand barely needing to move on my pants to bring myself off. I lift my dick out again and watch as the come starts flooding out of me onto my hand. I grunt through it, watching her body rock, shoulders shifting harshly back and forth, and then keep my hand moving slowly. That’s never happened before here. Not once. No woman has made me come without my own assistance before her,
DARK SCENES
One hand goes to his leg, and she slowly pulls herself up until she’s on her knees. A slap rings off the side of her face before she’s got herself fully balanced, the force and shock of it sending her straight back to the floor again. “Leave her alone.” “No. You know how to stop this. I’ll listen if you ask.” “You know I won’t.”He grabs hold of her hair and drags her away from me, no care for her thrashing legs and arms, and tosses her towards a wall. Her head rebounds off it, a shriek coming out of her mouth because of the impact. “I’m not doing this, Malachi.”He laughs. He laughs loudly and picks her hair up again, baiting me with the next hit he’ll give her. I step backwards, knowing there’s only two ways to stop this. One is leaving, the other engaging. I’m not doing the second option. “Gray,” croaks out of her. I ignore it and step backwards again. She’s made her choice. I’m not it, couldn’t be even if she did decide to leave with me. Maybe she’ll learn something here with Malachi, evolve past the maudlin place she’s in. My body turns, no last glance at her this time, and I walk out of the room. The scream that comes the moment my feet hit the hall sounds terrified. Not my problem. I stride on, listening to it ringing around the corridors, and try to stop the need to go back to her.
Final Thoughts on A DISTRACTION OF LIES by Charlotte E Hart
I want in! I want in this life. I want in this club. I want in this man’s thoughts. I want in Hannah’s skin!
And I am desperate to see what happens next.
It’s almost like an adult version of Alice in Wonderland. Surreal and fascinating and unpredictable. Deliciously fucked up.
I am an addict and Charlotte E Hart’s writing has become my drug.
After reading this I now want to go and binge the books I’ve not read by this author. This is book one in the Truth And Lies Trilogy. What a story.
When Hannah’s life completely changes she has to find herself. Her story with Gray has me waiting with baited breath for book two.
Plenty of questions need answers and I’m super excited to read more.
I’m not quite sure where to begin with the latest story by Charlotte Hart. A Distraction of Lies is book one in the Truth and Lies series, ok there is the start. This book is so intriguing and mysterious I just could not put it down. I didn’t know how the book or writing style was going to be having read Hart’s series about the Cane family, but I can honestly say that I was not disappointed. This book has so much mystery to it that when it gets to the cliffhanger ending you just have no clue what’s going to happen next. A sexy billionaire scientist with proclivities towards the dangerous side of the forbidden jump off the page and keep you help captive as if you were strapped on a St. Andrews cross. 5-stars for A Distraction of Lies
Hannah Tanner has been a good devoted wife to her husband Rick. She has followed wherever his job has led them. Hannah has hosted the parties and been the support that Rick needed. Now Hannah learns that it might have all been lies. Grayson Rothburg has a multi-billion-dollar pharmacy company. He makes the drugs that help the sick, but he also makes a profit. Gray has lived as a recluse for years only coming out when necessary. Somehow Hannah Tanner has found her way onto Gray’s radar. Gray has been indifferent about people, all people, including Hannah, but there is something about her that he can’t help but notice. Hannah needs a distraction from the lies, she wants something real. Gray knows just how to provide a distraction, but what if what he has in mind are just more lies for Hannah to uncover. Sometimes lies can hurt but then again sometimes the truth can hurt more.
So I’m taking some very liberal liberties here…..May Grace Slick forgive me
One pill makes you larger
And one pill makes you small
Go ask Hannah when she’s up against a wall
And if you go chasing rabbits
And you know you’re bound to fall
Well, tell ’em Gray
Has given you the call
When men on the chessboard
Get up and tell you where to go
Go ask Hannah, I think she’ll know
When logic and proportion have fallen sloppy dead
And Malachi is talking backward
And Faith, she’s off with her head
Remember what Gray said
Feed your head……
