In this tale of passion and obsession, Diana Bishop, a young scholar and a descendant of witches, discovers a long-lost and enchanted alchemical manuscript, Ashmole 782, deep in Oxford’s Bodleian Library. Its reappearance summons a fantastical underworld, which she navigates with her leading man, vampire geneticist Matthew Clairmont.
Harkness has created a universe to rival those of Anne Rice, Diana Gabaldon, and Elizabeth Kostova, and she adds a scholar’s depth to this riveting tale of magic and suspense. The story continues in book two, Shadow of Night, and concludes with The Book of Life.

It’s one of the best books I’ve read. I couldn’t wait for the rest of the trilogy
I enjoyed the Discovery of witches immensely. It was original in concept and has left me anxious to read the next book in the series.
Well written great imagination a bit sappy for me.
Well done. Interesting concept. Liked the characters.
I loved this story and everything in the two books that followed it. I listened to it and bought the hard backs. All of the characters were so real and so interesting. I nearly had a nervous breakdown waiting for two and three to be published.
Exceptional couldn’t wait to read the whole series
Original story and entertaining to read! Looking forward to diving into the vol 2!
A charming, witchy heroine and a brilliant – and, of course gorgeous – vampire surrounded by other creatures (and a few humans) in Oxford’s most famous library. Only a gutsy and intensely talented author would have thought to use this premise AND carry it off. Deborah Harkness is a genius. This is the first book of the trilogy. Don’t miss any of them. And Don’t Worry if you decide to reread them a couple of times – I did.
One of my favorite books of all time. I have read it at least five times. If you’re a fan of witty supernatural stories with more than a hint of romance, this is a must-read.
Love love Love this 3-book series. The first book starts a bit slow as it’s very history laden but by about page 100 it really takes off and the rest is just fun.
I enjoyed the characters and the prose. I purchased the other books in the series. It is an easy read, and keeps your interest. I gave 4 stars because there were some (I thought so anyway, no spoilers) plot discepencies where I thought “real people” would act differently in that situation. But over all, I highly recommend it.
This was a great fantasy read…It was refreshingly different, but had a lot of elements to it…mystery, suspense, romance, fantasy, intriguing characters, and a great plot.
I really wanted to like this book, but I do not particularly care for romance novels and that is pretty much what the book became. I’m fairly tired of dashing (read “dead”) vampire lovers.
Brilliant. This book is at the top of my list and I’ve recommended it to everyone!
Loved
One of my all time favorites. I’m having a hard time waiting patiently for the next installment.
I just love this book and the rest in the series. It was very captivating,
Great book, a must read
Another outstanding read from Deborah Harkness!
Love this book. Read the entire series and loved them all.
Would recommend them. In fact, I have recommended them and everyone who’s read them, loved them!
