Book one of the New York Times-bestselling All Souls trilogy—“a wonderfully imaginative grown-up fantasy with all the magic of Harry Potter and Twilight” (People). Look for the hit TV series “A Discovery of Witches,” streaming on AMC Plus, Sundance Now and Shudder. Season 2 premieres January 9, 2021! Deborah Harkness’s sparkling debut, A Discovery of Witches, has brought her into the spotlight … sparkling debut, A Discovery of Witches, has brought her into the spotlight and galvanized fans around the world. In this tale of passion and obsession, Diana Bishop, a young scholar and a descendant of witches, discovers a long-lost and enchanted alchemical manuscript, Ashmole 782, deep in Oxford’s Bodleian Library. Its reappearance summons a fantastical underworld, which she navigates with her leading man, vampire geneticist Matthew Clairmont.
Harkness has created a universe to rival those of Anne Rice, Diana Gabaldon, and Elizabeth Kostova, and she adds a scholar’s depth to this riveting tale of magic and suspense. The story continues in book two, Shadow of Night, and concludes with The Book of Life.

Great idea, good characters but too long and tedious. A lot of the daily details should be left out!
I lose myself completely in Harkness’s parallel world. I’ve read this book and the other two in the All Souls Trilogy multiple times, and loved them more each time. Her characters are nuanced and real, her magical/science correlations make sense, and I find myself touching my most-loved books, hoping for that little tingle!
Silly. The author has no clue how academic science works, so one of the main characters is a cartoonish figure. I couldn’t get over the simplistic premises used to portray academia.
Pleasant, but turns into a romance and then sets up the sequel.
Loved the characters and the historical twists and turns
I really enjoyed the characters and followed their journey into the second book. Debra Harkness is fabulous with her realistic historical concepts and trilogy of vampires, witches and demons a must read.
Can’t wait for the series or movies to come out.
I enjoyed this book immensely. A piece of advice. Make yourself read the first 100 pages or so. You will be so glad you did. I would recommend the trilogy. The author brings in history and does a fantastic job of it
Great characters and intriguing plot! Ready for the next installment!
excellent fantasy in style of Anne Rice. you really believe you are reading a true story not fiction
I read and loved the whole series. Too bad she hasn’t written anymore.
Read it twice now and still want to read it again
One of the best books I have read in a long time.
A Discovery of Witches is set in an alternate reality; it is our world plus. The story of what happens when a witch in denial and a vampire break tradition and fall in love. This is an action-packed, fun read and I am hoping for a sequel.
Intelligent and educated vampire love! Take a walk through history with well developed characters. Love, love, love this book. You will want to read all 3!
Read all 3 of the trilogy. Wish there were more to continue the story.
A Discovery of Witches is a an enjoyably detailed story written by a knowledgeable historian who has a knack for storytelling. The world you’re drawn into has something for everyone. “It begins with absence and desire. It begins with blood and fear. It begins with a discovery of witches.”
Wonderful reading. The whole series is great!
Loved this book, great imagination and I think meaning for some of our racial problems of today
I couldn’t put the book down!
