Charlie Asher is a pretty normal guy with a normal life, married to a bright and pretty woman who actually loves him for his normalcy. They’re even about to have their first child. Yes, Charlie’s doing okay — until people start dropping dead around him, and everywhere he goes a dark presence whispers to him from under the streets. Charlie Asher, it seems, has been recruited for a new position: as … as Death.
It’s a dirty job. But, hey! Somebody’s gotta do it.

I’m a big fan of dark comedy, and this is dark comedy at its finest. I love everything Christopher Moore writes, but this one is my absolute favorite!
Several of my fans recommended Christopher Moore to me, and now I see why. This book was funny and entertaining, sometimes lyrical, sometimes vulgar. (It’s definitely rated R.) I’m looking forward to my next Moore book.
Odd, kooky, absurd and quite funny. A fine escape from Reality, and lately I’ve needed that more than usual. I laughed a lot with this goofy story, lots of fun.
Best Book I have read in awhile. Very entertaining, kept me laugh out loud. I would recommend for those who have a different sense of humor. Can’t wait yo read the 2nd. Would read over defitanly
Moore has a knack for delivering witty, cleverly written stories.
Charlie Asher is the proprietor of a small shop in San Francisco whose life is as normal as normal gets. But, after his wife dies shortly after giving birth, Charlie is left on his own to raise their newly born daughter. That’s when things start to get weird. Weird as in objects in his store glowing, strangers dropping dead before him, and giants …
This is one of the first of Mr. Moore’s books that started it all for me. After I read “A Dirty Job” I wanted to read all of his books. He’s very entertaining. I never get bored when I read his novels.
This is one of my favorite from Christopher Moore. Several of these characters are featured in his other books. These characters are interesting enough to carry their own novels. The theme is one character has to collect the soul vessels of the newly deceased in order to keep evil from the world. I know it doesn’t sound funny- yet it is. …
This is a very good story rendered nearly unreadable to me because of the author’s constant and mostly futile attempts to be witty and clever simply for the sake of touting his own wit and cleverness. These attempts at wit do nothing for the plot or character development. If I had to read something about the “Beta male” five more times, my head …
Hilariously demented. Moore’s twisted humor will keep you guessing and laughing throughout this book.
Both hysterical and bittersweet with characters you want to have dinner with. I love everything Moore writes!
Charlie Asher, a beta male, is stunned to find out he’s death. Well, not Death with the capital D, more like Santa’s helper of Death… but there’s no Santa. Minty Fresh, Inspector Alphonse Rivera, Detective Nick Cavuto, and the Emperor of San Francisco all join in from previous Christopher Moore books as Charlie struggles to maintain his new …
As with all his books this is funny and a quick read!
Very funny and sad at this same time. Loved the main character.
Christopher Moore has become my new favorite author. A Dirty Job is the second of his books that I’ve read and it was wacky, fun and crazy the whole way through. So I followed it up by reading Secondhand Souls….which is the sequel and is another I-can’t-put-it-down book. His character development is riotous and as odd as they are, you want …
The first of two. This was the first Christopher Moore novel I read. Partly because I lived in San Francisco at the time (setting of this story) and partly because the book jacket and blurb intrigued me.
Well, I was hooked. I have read every book he wrote and am eagerly awaiting the next that will be released soon.
I wish this man could be …
I found this to be a very enjoyable and entertaining read. If you like The Dresden File series then you’ll like this book!
Parts were entertaining. parts were boring or silly. But an interesting concept and mostly adorable.
Totally quirky! Loved this book!
I love this book. Moore’s work is always about 6 degrees off normal and this is no exception. A Dirty Job is a great introduction to his work and will keep you coming back for more.
