I greatly enjoyed Eliza Thomson and her friend, Connie. They were delightful characters that propelled the mystery forward. Eliza’s husband, Archie, is a doctor and unknowingly becomes a part of a murder. True crime is right up Eliza’s alley so she convinces Connie to help her try to solve it. I must say that time flew as I read this short story. I look forward to reading more from this author. I received this book in exchange for an honest, unbiased review.
An easy read!
Our intrepid sleuth, Eliza, is quite the character! The historical context of the mystery is penned well too. The story is just the right length to read before turning in for the night!
A great introduction to a new cozy mystery series!
I downloaded and read this book as part of a joint cozy mystery authors’ promotion. I enjoyed it so much that I will be downloading the second book in the Eliza Thomson Investigates Murder Mystery series to my KU library.
This series is written in UK English. At first, I found the UK English “slang” along with the different spelling of words in our shared UK/American English language a bit confusing. Now, it is becoming “normal” to read and understand. Proof that old dogs can learn new tricks. Especially, when the reward is a good story.
The setting for this book is in England in the year 1900. The main character is a very modern-thinking woman for that era. I chuckled, more than once, at her outspokenness and determination to solve this mystery. She sure keeps her husband on his toes. I felt sorry for the good doctor a few times.
I don’t give away spoilers when I post a review. However, I do like to include a couple of teasers about the more interesting things I enjoyed about the story This book is not a novel, I finished reading it in one afternoon sitting. It is a quick and easy read. I recommend A Deadly Tonic for anyone of any age who loves a good mystery but doesn’t have days to invest in reading a full-length novel.
I received this book free as part of a promotion from a collection of Cozy Mystery Writers. Even so, this review is my voluntary and honest opinion.
Received a free copy from author for a review. It is a short, entertaining story. I enjoyed it and loved meeting Eliza Thomson. Looking forward to reading more in this series.
Three and a half stars! Quick, good read. Knew culprits immediately but quite like the characters. Would like to read more by this author. I received a free copy through a book funnel promotion. My review is freely and honestly given
Eliza, very witty character. Funny and interesting book.
Fun start to a new cozy series!
This was the first book I have read by this author and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Love the Victorian time period and the fact that our main character Eliza and her best friend Connie are not completely convectional to the time period. Eliza has her own ideas on what women are capable of and her husband is in somewhat reluctant agreement with her. Can’w wait to see where the series goes!
I received an ARC. This is my honest review.
This was a very quick read. A good kick-off for the series. I enjoyed the characters, especially Eliza & Archie. While I figured out the villain early on, it was still entertaining to see how Eliza worked it out.
Will definitely give the series a chance.
