This series is super fun and this book is no exception. This book does okay as a standalone the series is best read in order for character development purposes, but if this is your first book by this author, not only will you be able to catch on easily, you won’t be disappointed and want to go back and read the other ‘red’ books! Never a spoiler in any of my reviews, this story incorporates humor with an enthralling whodunit that keeps you guessing until the end. Characters you love to love and love to hate all with quirky personalities that keep you interested and swiping the pages on your Kindle, making this hard to put down. Southern Arizona is the setting of this down to earth, sometimes laugh out loud, clean murder mystery, with just the perfect amount of suspense and adventure! Leaves you anxiously awaiting for the next installment because you will certainly be hooked if you aren’t already! I requested a free copy of this book for the purpose of reading and reviewing and am providing my honest, unbiased and certainly unsolicited review.
Good mystery involving a lady detective with a partner that is funny or growly as can be. This is your witty story about private investigators hoping for each new job and trying to pay the rent. It was humorous but it had plenty of twists and turns woven into the story. R. P. Dahlke seems to be able to paint her characters so well that you can see them. That’s what makes them become so real. I thoroughly enjoyed her story. This is not a long book and although it ends just as a mystery should end, it reads so quickly you’ll want more.
A Dead Red Gamble is Book 6 in a series titled “Dead Red Mystery”. It can definitely be read as a stand- alone. It looks as if there are 7 books to date. If you read this, you’ll be hoping Dahlke keeps writing more in the series.
A great cozy mystery!
Things I liked:
1) It is part of a fantastic cozy mystery series that I have followed since 2014.
2) It is an entertaining and clean read.
3) The characters are so likeable and well-written in the story:
a. Lalla and Pearlie, her cousin, are wonderful characters. Their relationship, both professional and personal, is so true to life. They act more like siblings than cousins. They always have each other’s backs, even in the middle of their frequent spats.
b. Caleb, Lalla’s husband, who is also the local police chief is a great guy to put up with everything that life and Lalla throw at him. He is a rock.
c. I like the drama that always seems to radiate around Lalla’s dad. He may be 73, but he is still big in the game of life.
4) There were just enough red herrings to keep me guessing as to who the culprit was in this whodunit. Sometimes when you read a story, the good guy can look like a bad guy and vice-versa. Great storytelling by R. P. Dahlke.
5) This book/series is included in the Kindle Unlimited Library.
