Herodotus Award winner for Best Historical Mystery
“Kris Nelscott can lay claim to the strongest series of detective novels now being written by an American author.” —SalonWho is Smokey Dalton?Private Investigator Smokey Dalton works for Memphis, Tennessee’s black community. Laura Hathaway has sought him out because he’s a beneficiary in her mother’s will, and Laura wants to know why.
So does Smokey. He’s never heard of the Hathaways, but his search will take him on a journey that will change everything he’s ever known.
Set against the backdrop of the strike and protests that will end with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s assassination, A Dangerous Road combines the politics of race, betrayal, unexpected love, and the terrible cost of trust.
It’s a story so memorable the Mystery Writers of America chose it as one of the top five novels of the year and the Historical Mystery Appreciation Society honored it as the winner of the Herodotus Award for Best Historical Mystery.
What the critics say:
“Powerful stuff, with a role for every major black actor in Hollywood.”—Kirkus Reviews
“More than just offering a puzzle, this novel encourages self-examination about identity, responsibility and the consequences of choices. Smokey proves himself a man of conscience able to make tough choices.” —Publishers Weekly
“Nelscott’s series setting, in the turbulent late ’60s, gives her books layers of issues of racism, class, and war, all of which still seem to remain sadly timely today.” —Oregonian
“It’s not hard to draw parallels between Nelscott’s PI Smokey Dalton and Walter Mosley’s Easy Rawlins, another secretive, canny black man trying to solve mysteries while circumspectly navigating the white world. But Dalton’s no knock-off. (Would you label the hundreds of hard-boiled detectives who’ve appeared in Raymond Chandler’s wake mere Marlow Xeroxes because they’re white?)” —Entertainment Weekly

good character interaction and historical information about death of Martin Luther King with a fictional twist in the story line.
I was a young mother at the time of Dr. King’s assassination. Even though this book is a work of fiction, it brings to light the turmoil our nation was in at that time. This book has brought back so many memories; many of them tragic. A Dangerous Road was very well written. I highly recommend it.
Readers will enjoy this historical novel set in the nation’s fight for civil rights. All too common denial of equal rights seeps into the story. Characters must live two lives–public one and private one to survive normal living. Author does excellent writing to show not just the black-white conflict but right-wrong conflict one faced in the …
Great story weaving in historical events! Thoroughly enjoyed this read!
Very indicative of the timeframe of the book. Mixed history with fiction. Surprising twists. End was disappointing if a happy ending was anticipated
Totally unexpected on nearly every page. Great stuff.
Opens eyes. Want to read more by the author.
a different view of what most of us are taught for history. didn’t research this viewpoint but considering what I have learned about what has been taught it definitely makes you think
Good characters and an interesting story!
Exceptionally good read.
A great historical novel. Strong main character and realistic dialogue. I am definitely going to read the next in the series.
This is the first in a very well-written series about Civil Rights and life for black American’s in the 60’s. I highly recommend it for everyone – having lived in East Texas during this period, it brought back a lot of memories, some of which made me uncomfortable and yet reflective.
I was a bit disappointed with the ending. I know that black and white relationships were frowned upon, however I felt they had found true love and Smokey took his own path.
Truly amazing book! Pulled me into the time and place of the Civil Rights struggle and kept me guessing as to what would happen next right up to the end.
This was a great book
This book really inspired me. It was written so forthright that it inspired me to see different opinions. I really admire the main character.
One of the best mystery series I have read in a long time
Ok. Now I’m hooked on the series.
Very good
Highly recommend. Could. Not put it down
