Herodotus Award winner for Best Historical Mystery
“Kris Nelscott can lay claim to the strongest series of detective novels now being written by an American author.” —SalonWho is Smokey Dalton?Private Investigator Smokey Dalton works for Memphis, Tennessee’s black community. He has almost no interaction with the white hierarchy, even though they exist only blocks away. So he’s surprised the day … interaction with the white hierarchy, even though they exist only blocks away. So he’s surprised the day a white woman walks into his Beale Street office. Laura Hathaway has sought him out because he’s a beneficiary in her mother’s will, and Laura wants to know why.
So does Smokey. He’s never heard of the Hathaways, but his search will take him on a journey that will change everything he’s ever known.
Set against the backdrop of the strike and protests that will end with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s assassination, A Dangerous Road combines the politics of race, betrayal, unexpected love, and the terrible cost of trust.
It’s a story so memorable the Mystery Writers of America chose it as one of the top five novels of the year and the Historical Mystery Appreciation Society honored it as the winner of the Herodotus Award for Best Historical Mystery.
What the critics say:
“Powerful stuff, with a role for every major black actor in Hollywood.”—Kirkus Reviews
“More than just offering a puzzle, this novel encourages self-examination about identity, responsibility and the consequences of choices. Smokey proves himself a man of conscience able to make tough choices.” —Publishers Weekly
“Nelscott’s series setting, in the turbulent late ’60s, gives her books layers of issues of racism, class, and war, all of which still seem to remain sadly timely today.” —Oregonian
“It’s not hard to draw parallels between Nelscott’s PI Smokey Dalton and Walter Mosley’s Easy Rawlins, another secretive, canny black man trying to solve mysteries while circumspectly navigating the white world. But Dalton’s no knock-off. (Would you label the hundreds of hard-boiled detectives who’ve appeared in Raymond Chandler’s wake mere Marlow Xeroxes because they’re white?)” —Entertainment Weekly

Smokey Dalton mystery series, don’t miss it.
wow! twists and turns and a PI with a heart of gold and a social conscious! and an inside look at a volatile time in U.S. history…
Amazing story that weaves history into an emotional reality the reader can follow along with.
A quick but enjoyable read set in the recent past.
One of the most powerful novels I’ve read in awhile. Having lived through those times but in another area of the country and having been a long time follower of Dr Martin Luther King Jr and his beliefs, I found this book to be quite believable and sad for our country as a whole.
That being said, this was an excellent introduction to a fascinating …
Glad you asked! I happened to read this in February during the references to Martin Luther King. Jr. It took me back to the days before and after his assassination, with the prejudices and tensions of race relations. It’s a mystery. It’s a love story. It’s a challenge to be a better me. I immediately went to my library and looked for mor by this …
Combination mystery and historical fiction – set before and during the time of the assassination of Martin Luther King, Jr. A must read even for those of us who were alive then, especially those who did not live down South and were largely ignorant of what was actually happening there.
I am enough removed from that reality not to be certain if …
I could not stop reading this book. In fact I started the 2nd book in the series.
First time reading a book in this series. I will definitely be looking for another one.
Very well written. Could not put the book down from page one to the end.
Once I got into the story line, early on in the book, I couldn’t put this book down! The historical information of what it was like to live in Memphis in the mid to late 60’s was riveting, as well as were the enfleshed characters!
If you grew up in the south in the 1960s, you will appreciate this book. It is written from the perspective of an African-American man, Smokey Dalton, who went to elementary school with Martin Luther King. The setting is Memphis in the few weeks before Dr. King’s assignation. It is realistic historical fiction and very much worth the read.
great mystery in series. I have read them all. Recommend.
Wow – kept me reading…did not want to put it down. Great story and story line – I felt like I was right there!
Couldn’t read it fast enough; had difficulty puttong it down.
A phenomenal novel.
Enlightening about the civil rights era and Martin Luther King Jr, and what life was like, lynching of innocent lives, etc.
It is always amazing to read history or stories based on history…really enjoyed the author’s thoughtful focus on this particular infamous event…I have no doubt there were shenanigans going on of which the general public had no knowledge…excellent easy read…
Despite the protagonist being a kind of detective, this intriguing story is more a fictional account of Memphis in the 1960’s, with Atlanta and Alabama playing as co-stars. I thought the characters and story line were believable. I hope that the next book in the Smokey Dalton series continues to let readers know how the loose ends from this book …
Great book. This is about the south in the sixties. I really recommend it’s.
