A brilliant new crime novel from the beloved, bestselling, and award-winning master of the genre–and Joe Pike’s most perilous case to date.Joe Pike didn’t expect to rescue a woman that day. He went to the bank same as anyone goes to the bank, and returned to his Jeep. So when Isabel Roland, the lonely young teller who helped him, steps out of the bank on her way to lunch, Joe is on hand when two … lunch, Joe is on hand when two men abduct her. Joe chases them down, and the two men are arrested. But instead of putting the drama to bed, the arrests are only the beginning of the trouble for Joe and Izzy.
After posting bail, the two abductors are murdered and Izzy disappears. Pike calls on his friend, Elvis Cole, to help learn the truth. What Elvis uncovers is a twisted family story that involves corporate whistleblowing, huge amounts of cash, the Witness Relocation Program, and a long line of lies. But what of all that did Izzy know? Is she a perpetrator or a victim? And how far will Joe go to find out?

Love Elvis and Joe Pike!
Joe sees the teller from his bank kidnapped and saves her. But, shortly after that, she disappears. Joe hunts for her and digs into the reason for the grab.
Joe Pike and Elvis Cole are back in action. Crais certainly knows how to keep the story moving at a fast pace. Great characters. Well done.
Awesome book
A Joe Pike story with Elvis. Not as dramatic and intense as some of the other book in the series. It’s a good story and an interesting read…
As always, Robert Crais delivers on his promise to keep readers on the edge of their seats. This is a classic Joe Pike and Elvis Cole mystery with all the signature Crais elements of suspense, teamwork, and humor. Another can’t miss entry from Crais.
Another great book in this series
This is the 18th book in a series that I truly enjoy reading. I look forward to each book about Elvis Cole & Joe Pike. This one didn’t disappoint. In fact, it had you drawn in right from the first pages. A very well written thriller that will keep you guessing as to what will happen next. If you’re reading this series for the first time, go back and read the rest of them. You’ll become good friends with Elvis & Joe. Bravo Robert Crais! Looking forward to there being another one.
Robert Crais’s A DANGEROUS MAN was a thoughtful and tightly-constructed novel with wholly likable characters; unputdownable read.
I always love me some Pike and Cole, and this latest entry delivered the goods. It’s been entertaining to see the series grow from the days of Elvis popping into a phone booth to his being able to track down information with the best of them, only fitting for a man who bills himself as The World’s Greatest Detective.
Joe Pike is still Joe Pike, and we’re all happy about that.
The heroine of this book almost crossed the line into TSTL, but she was definitely in a situation that put her out of her depth, so I could cut her some slack. There was an interesting Federal Marshal and I wouldn’t mind seeing more of him in a future tale.
For longtime fans of the series this is a must-read. For newbies I still recommend starting with The Monkey’s Raincoat, even though it’s now a delightfully nostalgic tale rather than a cutting edge thriller. However, any book that brings us Elvis Cole and Joe Pike is worth reading, and you’ll find yourself hooked like the legion of Crais fans.
Joe Pike front and center as the main character with Elvis Cole sliding in to be backup makes for an amazing and entertaining read in the Elvis/Joe series! If ever a girl was in trouble, these are the guys that she would want standing beside her! The author does an excellent job of bringing the characters to life with well developed personalities that stay true to their character not only throughout the book, but the entire series! I actually enjoyed this one on audiobook and must say that the reader does an outstanding job of bringing the characters and their unique personalities to life. The only issue I have is that I have finished the book and now must wait for the next installment in the series to be written!
Always enjoy Elvis Cole and Joe Pike. Great read that is a real page turner.
Love this series.
Elvis Cole and Joe Pike are back in the saddle in this quick read. Pike is at a bank when a young woman is kidnapped. (I dislike coincidental starts, but that’s just me.) He rides to her rescue and the men who kidnapped her are killed within two days. Next up for the busy morgue, in this seemingly endless tale of bang-bang you’re dead, is a Marshall who worked in the federal witness protection program. Our young damsel is in peril as her parents are not who she thought they were. Bad men are after her. This formulaic caper has Pike and his often-humorous friend, Elvis Cole, risking their lives for the young woman they don’t know.
You don’t want to think too deep about the plot—a drug lord sends a dozen men to kidnap a 23-year old woman, yet has no protection at his own compound—but the faster the read, the less tightly woven the plot needs to be. It would be nice if the gifted author let his talent shine a bit more. Instead, one can sense the internal weariness with his creation. Any reader searching for character development in a series will need to look elsewhere, but that’s okay. This is not a series that promises progression. This is also the second Crais book in a row where the female characters are ditzy Valley Girls barely capable of chewing gum. Oh, the heck with it. It’s a fun two-day book—and that’s good enough.
Hard to choose between Joe and Elvis, but I lean toward Joe Pike. Great book!
I have yet to read a Robert Craig’s novel which I did not enjoy…the growth of the Elvis Cole and Joe Pike characters over the years has kept the series fresh and interesting.
For fans of Lee Child. I’ve read every Elvis Cole and Joe Pike mystery Crais has penned, and this was by far my favorite. The pace was relentless. The non-stop action reminded me of a Lee Child Jack Reacher novel. A Dangerous Man features heroes you can root for, laugh with, and be slightly afraid of at the same time. Unlike the majority of Crais’s books, bad-ass Joe Pike takes the lead role in this one, although charismatic Elvis Cole also plays a major role in taking down a despicable band of bad guys. Super fun, exciting read.
Couldn’t put it down.
Like all of Tims author’s books it’s realistic setting and action make it hard to put down.
His writing is so effortless, his characters so real, I dare you to try putting it down before the climax.
