The Duke of Wittaker has been living a lie…
He’s been spying on the dissolute, discontented noblemen of the ton, pretending to share their views. Now he’s ready to step out of the shadows and start living a real life…but when the prime minister of England is assassinated, he’s asked to go back to being the rake-hell duke everyone still believes he is to find out more.
Miss Phoebe Hillier … more.
Miss Phoebe Hillier has been living a lie, too…
All her life she’s played the game, hiding her fierce intelligence and love of life behind a docile and decorous mask. All it’s gotten her is jilted by her betrothed, a man she thought a fool, but a harmless one. But when she discovers her former fiancé was involved in the plot against the prime minister, and that he’s been murdered, she realizes he wasn’t so harmless after all.
And now the killers have set their sights on her…
The only man who can help her is the Duke of Wittaker — a man she knows she shouldn’t trust. And she soon realizes he’s hiding behind a mask as careful as her own. As the assassin steadfastly vows he acted alone, and as the clock ticks down to his trial, the pair scramble to uncover the real conspiracy. And as the pressure and the danger mounts, Phoebe and Wittaker shed their disguises, layer by layer, to discover something more precious than either imagined — something that could last forever. Unless the conspirators desperate to hide their tracks get to them first.

This is the third book in the Regency London Series, but this was my first Michelle Diener’s book. I like this historical romance that sets during the Regency period in London, with a plot about a politico-historical event. The storyline is mostly about the investigation, well described, but also about the slow burn love story between James and Phoebe. They are both great characters. I love this story, well written and well narrated, and enjoyed my listening. I like the note by the author by the end. Shiromi Arserio’s voice fits perfectly the story. I received this free review copy audiobook at my request and I have voluntarily left this review.
I enjoyed the book and will read more by this author.
Unique fusion of history and fiction. Interesting characters.
A refreshing historical romance with some real history as well as some real romance! Now, surely that is a winning combination! A well-told tale of the Regency period in London society and politics. Well done!
It starts out bad really bad. I hated it when it started. Another spy novel, yee gods no. But it actually is a true spy novel not just a silly romance masquerading as one. The plot is detailed and the trail to find the truth interesting. I knew that it either happened or the author was good at making minute detail. I knew the author wasn’t good at making up realistic detail because of the opening scene but she was very good at finding a logical trail for investigation. Now do I believe that I would love her other books? No. But I would recommend this one and I liked it very much.

This is the third book in the Regency London series. I have not read either of the two prior books but found that this book stands on its own and is a complete story [no cliffhanger ending]. I had no trouble understanding the characters or the story without having read the prior books. From other reviewers, I learned that there is a crossover of minor characters in this book who were characters in the other books in the series.
Here, Phoebe Hillier’s engagement is broken and then soon thereafter the Prime Minister is murdered. Her former fiance dies but was he involved in the plot to kill the Prime Minister? The Duke of Wittaker delivers the news of her former fiance’s death and begins an investigation into the circumstances of the Prime Minister’s murder. Phoebe decides to help him.
This story was loosely based on a true event – the murder of the Prime Minister, which made this story even more interesting. I really liked the characters of Phoebe and Duke of Wittaker and their relationship/interactions. This is a really well written story of mixing actual historical events with well developed characters, mystery and romance which moves at a good pace that hooks you from beginning to end. Highly recommend.
A refreshing read… original and kept me on my toes!
I loved the characters and although the story took place in a short amount of time I thought they were well developed. I enjoyed learning about the history behind the story in the author’s notes as well. Very well written and researched.
I liked this book in that I enjoyed the main characters, but I found that it was confusing and hard to follow at times. At the end of the book the author reveals that it was based upon a real historical event, which made some if the extra characters and details make sense, but I think it would have been more enjoyable as a romantic novel to focus less on the conspiracy and more on the romance. The actual romance was thin.
Fantastic, very hard to stop reading.
I really liked this book but I feel like it didn’t end well. I feel like it ended to suddenly. I went to turn to the next page too see it was over. I wish the author would have given me more.
I really enjoyed the mix of romance amongst a mystery. The two main characters were really likeable and good chemistry.
Twists and turns. Spies in disguise. Romantic. A favorite author.
Really enjoyed this book – a little different twist to the historical romance!
I enjoyed the book. Good characters and plot twist.
could not get into it a snooze feast
Good read!
Previously reviewed.
I’m still reading it but I think this book is a little slow for me. I’m over 50% of the book and the first kiss just happend between the characters and I expected a little more from it…
Very enjoyable, a great plot and based on historical facts with fiction. Highly recommend it.
