I love to read small town romances. Add some strong characters and a great plot and I call that perfect. Author Donna Grant has all that and more in this book, A Cowboy Like You. Skylar Long was desperate to escape from her abusive boyfriend. She ran and he followed her. She pulled into a rest stop where Sheriff Danny Oldman was in his truck enjoying the view and eating his dinner. When Skylar’s ex pulled into the rest stop and assaulted her it was a good thing Danny was there to save her. Skylar and Danny had gone to high school together and Danny had a crush on Skylar back then. The attraction is still there. Can Danny keep Skylar safe and will Cupid’s arrow strike to lead to a HEA for Skylar and Danny?
I really liked this story and meeting Skylar and Danny. This is an excellent series and I hope Donna Grant writes more stories in this series.

I have read all the Heart of Texas stories, and A Cowboy Like You has become my favourite.
Whilst it has all the trademarks of a lovely, sweet “cowboy” romance, it deals with some real life issues that so many are going through every day.
Danny and Skylar’s story is beautiful and sexy, however it is hard and heartbreaking at the same time.
I don’t want to give too much away about how things got to where they are, but just know that what Skylar is running from will get you right in the feels.
Danny is a knight with a shining badge. You can’t help but love the guy.
It was great to see the couples from the previous books and to get an insight to where they are now.
There are so many great guys in these books, and I need to learn all of their stories!
Hold on to your hats, because this stoic, lonely cowboy will steal your heart! Sheriff Danny Oldman’s priority is keeping people in his rural Texas county safe, but no number of calls and hours on the job can ease his loneliness, in spite of the close friends he has. When his high school crush finds her way back to Lone Star, however, everything changes.
Skylar Long put Lone Star, Texas, in the rearview mirror for the excitement of the big city soon after high school, but she finds herself right back there as she flees her abusive boyfriend. He follows her down the highway to a rest stop, but Sheriff Oldman is there to intervene, and Danny vows to keep Skylar safe as she uses the legal system to permanently rid herself of her ex and his family’s affluence and old money.
This one has everything I love in a good cowboy romance. A small-town charm with unbreakable bonds between friends. A strong, protective hero who will do anything for those he loves. A sultry romance with an air of suspense that keeps me riveted to the page and cheering on the characters. It brings me back to my cowboy romance roots courtesy of Carolyn Brown and BJ Daniels, and Danny and Skylar owned my heart from the first page to the last. Plan your next cowboy adventure with them, because I have no doubt you’ll love this one as much as I do!
*I read a pre-publication version of this book freely and voluntarily, having made no commitment to provide feedback and receiving no compensation of any kind from any source.
This book definitely had some suspense in it as well as romance. It is a second chance trope. Be warned: physical and mental abuse, stalking.
I loved the character of Danny. He was a strong alpha, but very protective and caring. He was the Sheriff of the small town and pretty much a loner. Then Skylar returns to town in trouble and Danny is there to protect her. Skylar had been in an abusive relationship, but is finally fleeing it. Go girl!
Skylar came into her own in the story and became stronger even though she was facing a lot of danger.
The one thing that bothered me about the story was how quickly Skylar and Danny fell back into a relationship. Even though they had a past, I just couldn’t buy that she would be ready to jump right into another man’s arms after what she had been through. Other than that, the story was very good and kept me turning the pages to see what was going to happen next.
I was given a complimentary copy of this book via NetGalley. All thoughts are my own.
“A Cowboy Like You” by Donna Grant
Wow, what a story. It is a contemporary romance with an abundance of suspense. I couldn’t wait to see how the story would unfold. There is some ‘spice’ and some ‘violence’ and an insight into the world of .. well I will stop there… when you read the story you will understand. I hate it when someone tells too much about a story. I want to find out the important details for myself. I received an ARC of this story from the publisher with a request for an honest review. This review is my honest opinion. If the book blurb caught your eye and you like well written romance-suspense novels, then I believe you will like this story just as much as I did. Happy Reading ! !
Sheriff Danny Oldman is married to his job. He never once forgot about his high school crush. Danny witnesses an altercation and steps in to defuse the situation. The woman involved is none other than Skylar Long, the one who got away. Danny risks everything, including his career, to protect Skylar from her fanatical ex. Will Danny take advantage of his second chance with Skylar? Can he keep her from becoming another statistic?
Skylar Long returns to her hometown to escape an abusive relationship. When her ex-boyfriend assaults her, she is rescued by the local sheriff. Skylar fondly remembers Danny from their high school years. However, she never expects their long dormant attraction to flare to life. Skylar’s obsessive ex threatens to ruin their budding relationship. Can Skylar and Danny thwart her ex-boyfriend and his powerful family? Or will she be forced to live a life of fear?
I am so happy that Danny finally received his deserved happily-ever-after. He is such a selfless man, who often ignores his own health and needs in order to help others in need. I admire Danny’s integrity. He believes in following procedures, the right way, to solve his cases regardless of the outcome. Danny understands the system fails more people than it helps, but he still believes in it. What I like the most about Danny is his belief in his friends. He knows his friends would help him with any grim situation that arises. They always have his back regardless of the danger.
Skylar is such an inspiration, especially for battered woman stuck in harmful relationships. She proves it is possible to escape such a life. I like how upfront Skylar is with Danny from the start. Danny’s presence makes her feel secure enough to acknowledge the hard truth about her situation. I adore the fact that Skylar is not the type of female who likes pink. She and I have that in common. What I love the most about Skylar is how she knows what a great person Danny is. She recognizes the fact that he is one of the good guys, the complete opposite of her slimeball ex-boyfriend.
A COWBOY LIKE YOU is book four in Donna Grant’s cowboy-themed, romantic suspense series, HEART OF TEXAS. The story can easily stand alone. The author does a splendid job of summarizing the events from the prior books without it being too obvious. However, to understand the dynamics between the hero and the North and Harper families, it is necessary to read the prior books.
A COWBOY LIKE YOU is a riveting tale of two people fate gifts of a second chance. I am still eagerly anticipating Jace or Cooper’s book. Also, I hope the author plans to pair the fierce attorney Leslie with either Cash or Ryan.

This was just okay for me. I haven’t read the others in this series, so the beginning was a little confusing when Danny takes Skylar to the East Ranch and everyone is there. They’re sorta introduced, but there is so many people it was overwhelming. I wasn’t a fan of how fast the MCs get into a relationship either. While I get instant attraction, a woman escaping from an abusive relationship doesn’t strike me as someone who would immediately jump into another relationship. The whole “they went to high school together” didn’t really work for me either. That was at least 15 years ago, and they weren’t even really friends then. The stuff that happens with Matt towards the end of the book could be triggering for some people. It was a little heavier than I thought it would be. Danny and Skylar do get their HEA, even though it was hard fought. Although this wasn’t a favorite, I would read this author again.
I voluntarily reviewed an advanced readers copy of this book.
I’ve read a couple of Donna Grant books and I think this one might be my favorite so far.
I love small-town romance and both Skyler and Danny were characters easy to connect with. The story is filled with drama about relationship going wrong and trying to escape it and coming across to find that one person who is ready to help you out no matter what.
This book has a lot of triggers and I’m happy that i got a change to read it.

Cowboys and love go so well together….
If you haven’t been reading this series than Danny and Skylar will be the start of a happy read-a-thon. This series is home, family and love all wrapped up in cowboys. In other words, reading heaven!
Danny and Skylar are old friends. Years earlier, they wanted different things, in different places. Their reunion was sudden, unexpected and marred by a dangerous situation that Skylar couldn’t get away from. Danny’s protective streak was instantly on high alert and family and friends quickly circled the wagons as well. Skylar didn’t have one friend in town, she quickly had many. And did she need them!
Their courtship was complicated by the situation but made even sweeter because of it. Danny was everything Skylar needed and their relationship was everything they both deserved… Sweet and emotional, this was a great instalment in a must-read series.

A Cowboy Like You is an action packed romantic suspense novel. On the run from an abusive boyfriend, Skylar stops at a rest stop and is attacked. Danny is eating his lunch when he sees a domestic violence scene unfolding before.him. Always one to run to the rescue, Danny jumps in before realizing it is his old high school crush. Their feelings develop quickly as they fight Skylar’s powerful ex and his family in a tale that made me think Liam Neeson should be starring in the lead role. Their relationship moves very quickly and the violence escalates to epic proportions in the story that is somewhat over the top. I enjoyed the main characters but found the story somewhat predictable while being a little light on the love story. My voluntary, unbiased review is based upon a review copy from Netgalley.
Skylar is on the run from her ex boyfriend who started abusing her. She is pulled into a rest stop when her ex finds her there. Danny is the sheriff of their small town and was eating supper in his truck. He rescues Skylar from her ex and Danny can’t believe it’s the girl he had a crush on in high school. Danny takes her to some of his friends ranch to hide out from her ex. But Skylar’s ex figures if he can’t have her, no one can.
This story was a whole lot better than I thought it would be. Danny is strong and protective and Skylar is smart and beautiful. A little suspense and some loving.
* Voluntarily read and reviewed this for NetGalley *
I’ve read a lot of this author’s works, and they’ve all been enjoyable reads, and this one was no exception! I was very pleased to see who this book featured for a main Hero!
Danny has always intrigued me since I read the first book. I’d always been hoping to have him have his own story, but when we got right down to it, he fell short. His loner nature wasn’t fully explained by the “pining for my high school crush” trope used to explain it, especially since he seemed to be a take charge kinda guy.
I really liked Skylar! I was able to easily identify with her, and I liked her willingness to stand up to her ex. I had a difficult time believing that she was that in love with Danny that she’d jump into a relationship with him so soon after her “break up” with Matt. I would have liked to see her take a bit of a breath and mourn the loss of that relationship before taking up with Danny.
The book is fast paced and engaging, with a subtle suspense plot that threw in a few twists for me. All things considered, a very enjoyable read!
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advance copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
A Cowboy Like You, by Donna Grant, is available at booksellers 11-26-19. As book 4 in the Heart of Texas series, Cowboy in some ways works as a standalone but I think reading the first 3 would give the reader more insight into the dynamics of the characters. The tidbits mentioned of other characters hinted at more backstory but didn’t satisfy completely. I understand it’s a fine line to walk, not getting too involved in secondary characters, but it didn’t hit the mark.
Skylar Long is running from her abusive boyfriend. This time she almost got away. He tracks her like a big game hunter, he’s awful. He fooled her for a long time before he let the crazy show. She also didn’t bother to look past the surface, didn’t ask questions I would have right away. For some reason she had started driving towards her old hometown & got lucky that the sheriff was around when Matt caught up to her. Turns out she went to school with the sheriff & he goes way above & beyond to help her. She got lucky, he’s got an amazing group of friends to help keep Skylar safe while things work out. She becomes too trusting too fast for me to believe. After everything she’s been through why isn’t she more closed off & wary?
Sheriff Danny Oldman is a workaholic. Married to his job he hasn’t had a date or relationship of any kind in years. It’s a little hard to believe, not even the waitress at the diner? Anyone? He’s given up. Skylar turns out to be his school crush, the one he never got over. It’s too pat that they fall into a relationship right away, they knew immediately kind of thing.
I liked the characters, want to go back to book 1 and find out more about this tight group of friends. I want to know how it came to be. The story has plenty of drama, action, timely topic, lust, & romance. It just all happens too fast.

I love the covers of this series. They make me want to get in them and have a cowboy to call mine.
Danny and Skylar are that typical teenage couple who have crush, but no one is brave enough to make the first move, and when the courage comes, the opportunity has passed. And that made Danny heartbroken.
Years later, Danny’s crush returns to town, and now she has serious problems when her ex decides never to stop bothering/stalking her.
Now is the time for Sheriff Danny Oldman to take action, just like the boy/man in love he always was, and this time he won’t let Skylar get away.
4 stars
A Cowboy Like You pretty much falls in line with the rest of the Heart of Texas series in terms of my feelings about the book. The story has some things I like and some I don’t, landing me somewhere in the middle. The suspense is pretty good, and domestic violence is a serious topic when the main focus is supposed to be a romance. And that’s where I started running into problems with this one. Not the domestic violence topic, I’m all for shedding light on a subject that was only whispered about for way too long. However, the romance in this one came up sorely lacking for me. I get that Skylar and Danny already knew each other, but it’s not like they saw each other every day either. There should have been some getting to know each other time before they were madly in love. And speaking from experience, Skylar should not have been so willing to trust, especially while everything was still going on. The love story here just didn’t ring true. The ending felt a bit rushed also, but when you consider the romance, it fits. In the end, this one was just okay for me.
3.5 stars
I know that I have mentioned this before, but cowboy romances are one of my guilty pleasures. There is just something about a cowboy that gets me. It might be the jeans or the fact that they are (usually) not talkative. Whatever it is, I love reading them. So when I saw A Cowboy Like You was up for review on NetGalley, I knew that I had to read it. While I am glad that I read it, I was left wanting with this book.
The plotline for A Cowboy Like You was fast-paced. While I like fast-paced plotlines, there are times where I think that they can go too fast. And this is one of them. I felt that some of the major plotlines were rushed along. I also had an issue with dropped plotlines. The slashed tires sub plotline was one. What happened to her afterward? Maybe I missed it (quite possible). She went to jail and bam, nothing about her ever again. Or the hacking subplot. It was never finished and left me wondering what happened with that.
I did like Skylar, and I sympathized with her. The author painted a realistic picture of a woman who was trying to leave her abusive boyfriend. My heart broke for her during those first few chapters. All she wanted was to leave; she didn’t ask for anything that Matt put her through. Her inner strength did show when Matt’s family started their smear campaign in the media. All over a restraining order. I did understand why she wanted to leave the ranch, but at the same time, I was mentally urging her to stay on it.
I loved Danny, even if he was a little disillusioned with his job. I get it. There is only so much that he could do when it came to domestic violence situations. I also understood why he got involved with Skylar’s case. As the book went on, I was impressed with how far he would go to protect Skylar.
I wanted to drop kick Matt. Every single scene he was in, he left a bad taste in my mouth. He needed someone to beat him down the way that he hit Skylar and the woman before her. His family was no different. They gave me chills also.
The romance between Danny and Skylar didn’t feel right to me at first. It was too fast, and so soon after her last relationship. Because of that, I didn’t feel any romantic connection between them. But, the sex scenes were hot!!
A Cowboy Like You is the 4th book in the Heart of Texas series. It can be read as a stand-alone book. But, I suggest reading the previous books before this one. That way, you can better understand the backgrounds of the other characters.
The end of the book was intense. But it was rushed. While I was glad about everything that happened, I couldn’t quite believe it, even with the epilogue. As I said, everything was rushed. I am interested to see how the next book is going to be about.
A Cowboy Like You is the fourth book in Donna Grant’s Heart of Texas series, a series I’ve been following, and, although I found some things I liked about this novel, I will admit to having some problems with it as well, which is the reason for my giving a rating of just 3 stars.
First, the title–the hero, Danny, is the sheriff, not a cowboy, and while a good part of this novel is centered at the East Ranch, owned by the Harper family (we’ve met the Harper siblings in the first 3 novels in the series), it doesn’t make the very likable hero a cowboy. Second, at the beginning of the novel, he seems to be pining for Abby, a former high school crush now married to one of his closest friends, Caleb Harper, until we learn later that it’s not Abby he’s pining for. Danny also seems to be developing a drinking problem because he’s lonely, and all his friends seem to have found their ideal mates, and Danny has never found his–pretty hard to do when one hasn’t dated in years. His drinking is something I don’t think should be encouraged as a way of dealing his or anyone else’s loneliness or problems.
As Danny returns home from work, he realizes the cupboard in his home is bare, he goes off to get a takeout dinner, and parks in a rest area to enjoy his meal and his favorite view, something he’s often done, but when a car pulls into the rest stop and parks, lights off, his interest is picqued. Shortly thereafter, another car pulls in, the angry driver gets out, starts yelling at the woman inside the other car to get out and begins pounding on her car. He then breaks the driver’s side window and attempts to drag the terrified woman out of the car by her long, blonde hair, while screaming threats at her for having the nerve to leave him. That’s when Danny steps in, arrests the guy, Matt Gaudet, and Danny realizes the the woman Matt has been abusing is a former classmate of his, Skylar, the girl we soon learn is the one he crushed on in high school, and she plans to press charges. If domestic violence, or any other type of violence is a trigger for you, put down this book and find another, because this is certainly not the only violence contained within its pages, and at times it nearly seemed more like a treatise on domestic violence than a romance novel.
After locking up Matt, Danny takes Skyler to stay with his friends, at the very secure East Ranch. It seems that all the men on the ranch, including Caleb, were trained as Green Berets, SEALs and Special Forces operatives, and the ranch is as secure as any fortress. He knows his friends will keep Skylar safe from her abuser, who is the son of one of the most wealthy families in the state, the Gaudet family, a family well used to buying their trouble-prone eldest son out of every situation he gets into, simply to keep up appearances, and enabling Matt to continue his violent and controlling behavior, because he never has had to face any consequences for his violence towards women.
As Skylar is holed up at the East Ranch, she and Danny soon act on their mutual attraction, and it was too soon, in this reader’s opinion. As a battered woman, one would think Skylar wouldn’t trust her judgement about men, or seek out a new relationship when her last relationship was such a disaster. As a character, Skylar, although made to seem spunky, never bothered mentioning her abusive boyfriend to anyone, never documented her abuse with the police, hid it from her friends and family, and basically doing everything you’re not supposed to do when you find yourself in an abusive relationship. At least she took photos of her bruised and battered body on her cell phone.
While Danny is smitten and extremely protective of Skylar, their insta-love simply didn’t convince me of their compatibility, and her jumping into bed with Danny, while hiding from Matt, just didn’t jibe with what I already knew about the psychological damage abused women suffer, and so their sudden romance and sudden lust, just didn’t work for me.
While the novel is well-written, well-plotted, well-paced, and certainly both suspenseful and graphically violent when the action and danger ramp up, there seems to be little depth in any of the characters, especially Danny, who is always “nice” and protective, and Matt, who would have benefited by the author giving the reader some reason or rationale for his violent and abusive behavior, something we learn dates far back into his grade school years.
This being a novel of romantic suspense, while the suspense was good, the romance was certainly lacking, and although there is the expected HEA ending, it too lacked depth and was again, far to abrupt. If you’re looking for a quick, suspenseful read, and are not triggered by violence and domestic abuse, then you’ll probably like this novel more than I did. For me, the leading characters needed more depth and more time for their relationship to develop. I’d also suggest reading the books in this series in the order they were written, because trying to tell who was married to whom, whose children were whose, and where the extraneous other characters introduced at the East Ranch was difficult enough for someone who’s read the first three novels in the series, and would probably be almost incomprehensible to a newcomer to this series.
I voluntarily read an advance reader copy of this novel. The opinions stated are my own.
Being abused by the person who say they love you is never right. This story may trigger unpleasant memories for som readers but mostly it should give you hope. The author has done a wonderful job of dealing with a gut wrenching subject. Skylar and Danny grew up together. He has always had a crush on her but never acted on it. When fate brings her back into his path, under extremely bad circumstances, they discover in each other what they had missing all their lives. With support from friends and the community they overcome the obstacles and get the greatest of gifts at Christmas, love that is pure and true.
This story grabbed me from the first chapter. I did not want to have to put it down. The story flows smoothly, has well developed characters, deals with real-world issues, and puts it all together seamlessly. We meet the two main characters; one is a small county Sheriff and the other was the Sheriff’s crush in high school. They meet for the first time since high school graduation; almost ten years later, under very unsavory conditions. Due to the Sheriff’s honesty and real caring, he is surrounded by a wonderful support team in his friends and colleagues. These friends don’t hesitate to come the Sheriff’s aid when needed. The author’s writing made me want to care about these characters and route them on to their HEA. I recommend this story to those that enjoy a good intrigue story sprinkled with romance.
I really enjoyed A Cowboy Like You, and I wasn’t sure I was going to because Danny wasn’t that interesting to me in past books. I liked him, but I didn’t love him. Boy did he show me the error of my ways. Danny and Skyler were perfect for each other. Their story was a bit of an insta love with a twist, they went to high school together and both had a crush and didn’t know. It was a little outrageous to believe that those feeling not only stayed for 20 some years with no contact, but that they were that strong, it worked for the story though. You get to see plenty of past characters, and I’m very curious as to whose book is going to be next.
