When Skylar runs away from her abusive ex-boyfriend, he ends up catching her and promising she’ll regret running. Luckily for her, her old friend (and now county sheriff) Danny, sees she’s in trouble and comes to her rescue.
With Skylar’s ex determined to get her back, by any means necessary,Danny has to call on friends to help him keep her safe. But will he be able to Skylar safe?
This was an excellent addition to the Heart of Texas series. The subject matter is tough, but the author handles it very well. I think this is one of my favorite books in the series.
Possible trigger warning: domestic abuse, stalking
I received a copy of this book from the publisher via NetGalley. My thoughts and opinions are my own and without bias or favor.
Sheriff Danny Oldman has pined for one woman, SKylar Long. Ever since they were friends in high school he has loved her but never asked her out as she was always talking about how she was leaving town after graduation and never coming back. You know…small town girl just can’t wait to get out of dodge.
Just at the point in his life where Danny is starting to realize he’s lonely Skylar comes crashing back into his life. At a rest stop where he’s gone to eat his dinner she pulls up next to him and the next few minutes change both their lives. Skylar is running from an abusive boyfriend. Danny witnesses it first hand and from there he vows to take care of Skylar no matter what.
It’s going to take a village to help Skylar. Her soon-to-be ex is from one of the wealthiest families in Houston and they don’t like having anything negative said about them. But just how far will they be willing to go to keep one son out of jail and keep the other son’s bid for governor in good standing.
Ride through their finding each other and truly making a love connection.
I love Danny! He is such an awesome person and sheriff. I really liked the story line. I think it could help people as both women and men go through this all the time. This may help them to actual reach out for help. There is a great romance that happens between Danny and Skylar. A long lost love that is back again. You can read this as a stand alone but all the books in this series are awesome and I recommend all of them. I cried at the beginning of this book cause I felt so much for Danny. I can’t wait for the next book.

A Cowboy Like You by Donna Grant
Heart of Texas #4
The sheriff is lonely when the book begins and he is thinking about the girl in high school that he had a crush on but never put the moves on. Christmas is coming and he is tired, hungry and alone. Almost as if his thoughts have conjured her he sees the woman he has been thinking about attacked in the parking area he just happens to be parked in. Danny Oldman is definitely surprised and happy to see Skylar Long again and Skylar is equally happy to see Danny.
This small town second chance romance is action-packed and filled with people from previous books. Danny is a good man who deserves a good woman just as much as Skylar deserves a kind man that will treat her well. The two may have found just that in one another but there is the pesky problem of the abusive ex-boyfriend, Matt, who is a narcissistic obsessed bad guy that likes to hurt women.
I enjoyed returning to the group of people in this series and enjoyed reading how Danny and Skylar achieve their HEA even though I was a bit surprised at how quickly they fell into the relationship. The story is fast paced and easy to follow and I was invested in the two finding their way out of the troubles they found themselves in. At times I felt it was a bit predictable but all in all I enjoyed the story. I also imagine that with Ryan, Jace and a few more that are still not married this series will have more books I can look forward to reading. I kind of wonder if Ryan will stay on as the Chief or take up the Texas Rangers on the job offer.
Thank you to NetGalley and St. Martin’s Paberbacks for the ARC – This is my honest review.
3-4 Stars
I thought that this was a very entertaining and emotional read. I found it easy to feel the heavy dose of sweetness that flowed through this story. Danny and Skylar’s romance will definitely tug on your heartstrings as these two find two find themselves drawn back into each others orbit and getting a second chance to act on long simmering but unvoiced feelings for each other. All this sweetness and emotion are well balanced out with intense drama and danger in the form of Skylar’s obsessive and abusive ex. If you love a strong storyline and lots of feel you don’t want to miss this book.
A very exciting and suspenseful story!
Danny and Skylar practically leap off the pages. Skylar as the damsel in distress (though very fierce in her own right) and Danny as the protective alpha male with the tender and caring side.
I was thirsty for justice thru the whole story. Every twist and turn made me want it more! Though a little wordy at times, given all the excitement, I’d still give it 5 stars!

This is the fourth book in the series& is my favourite. A lovely second chance romance that also had an abusive, stalker of an ex. I’m so pleased that Danny has had his story he deserved it & his story didn’t disappoint. I loved both Danny & Skylar, he’s just lovely & she’s stronger than she thinks, they were so right for each other. A well written book that flowed really well.
My honest review is for a special copy I voluntarily read
Book 4 in the Heart of Texas series was my first dive into contemporary fiction with Donna Grant. I have been a fan of her Dark Kings, Dark Sword & Reapers books. Although I had not read the first 3 books in the series, I was quickly invested in the lives of the characters that I know played a starring role in those books. As a stand-alone book, A Cowboy Like You was great. However, I really need to go back and read the first three books to get all the deets on the lives of the characters met there. The tidbits were captivating. Okay, back to this book… the characters were fascinating! I don’t have many friends, but if I knew people like Danny and his crew, I would have a lot! The plot of the story, between Danny and Skylar, was entertaining. But what really drew me in were the cast of characters surrounding them. I can see myself getting hooked on this series!
Both Skylar and Danny were good main characters, they made you want to see them win. And for them to win and be together. Danny was such a solid good guy who had helped so many people. Now so many people want to be there for him.
Skylar got sucked into her ex Matt’s web because he had been good hiding the monster that he really was. Now she has to fight to stay out of his reach. And what a fight it will be.
There were really good secondary people in the story. It seems like there was more story about the support that Skylar and Danny were getting from the people around her than the romance between the M.C.’s. Of course, Matt and other things keeps everything jumping.
Matt was one violent, evil guy who was way too clever. He was REALLY skilled when it came to trying to manipulate and control people. Let’s face it. It’s not his first rodeo. And it didn’t help that he had so much money and influence. You just didn’t know what he was going to do next. The tenseness that Matt creates is felt throughout the story. His overconfidence and desperation to get Skylar back ramps things up even more dangerously for all. It makes things even more interesting as the story comes to it’s end. There is an Epilogue included and everything wraps up. The only thing I might have liked to see is more consequences shown with Matt’s family.

Skylar never thought her life would lead her back to her home town, but that exactly where she was headed when her life with her boyfriend took a frightening turn. She also never expected Danny to be the one to save her. All of a sudden it’s like time never passed and all she can see is him. The Sheriff. The boy who was everyone’s friend. Who would help anyone in need. Now it seems it’s her turn, and she definitely needs help.
Danny never expected his evening would end with saving Skylar from her crazy boyfriend. He never expected to see her again. It’s like she never left. Neither did his feelings for her. He would do anything to keep her safe. Even asking his friends for help. Every day with her makes it harder to ignore his feelings, it would only make things with her ex harder. Knowing she feels it too makes it impossible.
Her ex however will not give up easily, neither will his family. So keeping Skylar safe is all he can think about. He will not stop until she is free of het past, until her future is all she has to think about.
Another great story full of wonderful people and Cowboys who will do anything to protect the ones they love.
A Cowboy Like You
by Donna Grant
A small town sheriff and a girl from his past. Is this a typical beginning? Nope, because the sheriff has to save the girl. And this is a story about the struggle and fight to stand up and not have your voice and independence be squashed by a man bent on control.
Sheriff Danny Oldman and Skylar Long the victim, are thrown together by chance, to fight for justice against an aggressor, Matt Gaudet. As you read this story, you’ll find that it almost comes across as a true victims account. It also shows the aggressor, their temperament and the way his mind works.
As the story progresses, the intensity does too, in the way of violence. Skylar, being an independent woman, has issues with excepting help and underestimating Matt’s potential violence. I found it to be annoying, when she became whinny, that Matt would let her go and was done with her. Skylar was too casual about staying away from Matt for awhile, thinking he would just give up.
I found the storyline to be well planned, especially considering the content of this book. The characters were real and tangible. I enjoyed this book and learned more about abusive behavior.

*REVIEW*
A Cowboy Like You is a sweet second chance romance. Danny and Skylar were high school sweethearts, but the relationship ended, and Skylar left small town life behind. Now, years later, Danny is the town Sheriff, single(he never got over Skylar),and the woman he has always loved is back in town. Skylar is fleeing from her obsessive abusive ex boyfriend. When Danny and Skylar meet again, it’s as if no time has passed, and the chemistry between them is stronger than ever. As they figure out where this relationship stands and how they feel, Skylar’s ex has not given up his pursuit and stalking of her. It’s up to Danny, and a few guys from town, to keep Skylar safe. I love Danny and Skylar. They are a charming couple with so much potential for a wonderful future together. The story is entertaining, delightful and well written with a plot that will hold your interest from beginning to end. I’m interested in reading about some of the secondary characters in their own stories, perhaps? An excellent choice for all romance readers!
This book grabbed my attention and held it. Skylar on escaping her abusive partner finds herself back in her hometown and relying on an old school friend, now a Sheriff to keep her safe from her ex who has no intention of letting her go. This book has a bit of everything; friendships, romance and suspense.
Though I have given this 5 stars I would however have liked to know whether the Gaudet family were ever prosecuted and I don’t understand the book title as Danny is in law enforcement.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book from NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
4 1/2 stars. Absolutely loving this series so far. This is an awesome second chance romance about Danny and Skylar. Add in some suspense, a gorgeous setting in a small town, and great secondary characters and you have yourself a winner. I loved it!!

This book features Danny and Skylar. These two have feelings that go way back to high school but were never acted on. Imagine his surprise when he stops a domestic violence scene and Skylar is the woman. The story is about Danny, a sheriff, protecting Skyler from a wealthy man who thinks if he can’t have her, then no one can. It’s about these two getting a second chance at long buried feelings.
The story line is fantastic with great flow. This is a small town romance with awesome characters. These characters are people I’d love to be friends with.
This is a well written “suspense and danger among the ranch culture of Texas” story. Donna Grant does these really well and this continues the Heart of Texas series. I love the world-building and the characters in this series. This time, Sheriff Danny Oldman reconnects with the girl he crushed on all through high school but never asked out and has carried a torch for ever since. Since it was a mutual crush, it’s pretty much insta-love now that they meet up as mature adults who have lived and know they are ready to try for a forever kind of relationship. Unfortunately, her abusive ex isn’t going to let Skylar just walk out of his life. Let the dangerous dance of the rich lunatic vs Danny’s good-guy rancher friends, all of whom are prior military and not afraid to get their hands dirty (or bloody) to help out a friend (or a friend of a friend) begin. It’s not sweet and fluffy, so beware if that is your inclination. If you like gritty thrillers or “hide and seek with knives and guns” grab this one.
I requested and voluntarily read an advance review copy provided by the publisher via Netgalley and I offer my honest opinion in response.
A Cowboy Like You (Heart of Texas #4) by Donna Grant ….Each book gets better…they can be read as a stand alone…but I suggest you read them all. Donna gives us all the feels…love, possession, found again love, hate, terror, wonderful friendships, some laughs and tears, kidnapping, brute force, loyalty, bravery, some steam all leading to a very HEA. Donny(the sheriff and high school crush) Skylar( running from an abusive boyfriend) I can’t wait for the next book. Thank you Donna Grant for letting me preview and rate this book.
A Cowboy Like You is a wonderful read. You will just love this one. Danny is this hometown sheriff that will make you heart melt. I love how he stops at nothing to protect Skylar. I love how he is with the town people and all his friends. This is a wonderful small town romance with that hint of danger in the air. Skylar is just trying to escape and move on with her life. She is so strong and doesn’t let her ex stop her from moving on. Skylar and Danny have this amazing chemistry throughout this one. This is such a sweet read that will fill your heart to the fullest.
A Cowboy Like You is the fourth book in Donna Grant’s Heart of Texas series. Sheriff Danny Oldman is dedicated to his job but his good friend Clayton East sees a lonely man. Although like a family member to the East-Harper families, Danny stays to himself more often than not, which brings him to one of his favorite views to eat a carry out dinner.
While eating he sees a fancy red car parked yet running near him. Then appears another such car which parks next to the first. A man exits the car and approaches the red car. Words ensue, with the man’s anger escalating. In his anger, he smashes the driver side window and starts pulling a woman out of the window. His dinner forgotten, Sheriff Oldman draws his sidearm and orders the man to stand down. Calling for backup, the sheriff takes the man into custody before realizing that the woman under attack is his one that got away, Skyler Long. Skyler and Danny had attended high school together. She seemed so far out of his realm, Danny had missed any chance he might have had when she left Lone Star, never to return until now.
But Danny has no time to think about old times, Skyler is a woman that needs protection from a brutal boyfriend who is from a powerful family. Bring in the East-Harper family and they all pull together to protect Skyler.
This is a dynamic and very time relevant tale. It explores multiple aspects of an abusive relationship and how difficult it can be to get away from it. Plus, this story delves into the personality of a sadistic narcissist. It is fast paced and a real page turner with an endearing cast of characters. I did enjoy this book and I do recommend it
Terrific romantic suspense story.
Danny is in the right place at the right time to rescue a woman being pursued by her violent ex, and he’s stunned to see Skylar, the girl from his youth that he never got over. The story is centered around all the good people in town banding together to protect Skylar from the evil-incarnate ex, whose unlimited resources and politically-connected family allows him to keep the pressure on her from all angles.
In the few breaks from the action, Danny and Skylar reconnect and find that now is their best time to make a go of their relationship. All the suspense and tension is confined to the attempts to bring the ex to justice, making Danny and Skylar’s romance smooth-sailing by comparison. There’s an exciting showdown followed by a lovely HEA. I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book.
