I was immediately drawn to Danny Oldman, the hero in this story, as he portrayed a deep sadness and loneliness that almost broke my heart. He is the sheriff and it takes up most of his life, time, and is a major commitment but he realizes he is just…alone in the world. He has great friends – ones that you REALLY wish would have your back if you ever needed help – but it’s just not the same as having a family of your own. And it’s close to the holidays so I could actually feel his sadness.
One night, as he sits by himself in a rest stop, he runs into someone he met long ago, Skylar Long. She is being followed and harassed by her ex-boyfriend but there is so much more to read about that meeting. It’s a great story – the intrigue that the author weaves to explain Skylar’s story kept me on the edge of my seat. The slow buildup of feelings between Danny and Skylar made me sigh, in a good way.
Really loved this book! Kept me guessing and rooting for both of these characters, from start to finish.
Danny renews romance and ties with Skylar when she returns to hometown although danger follows to interrupt this second chance for love.
Ebook from netgalley and publishers with thanks. Opinions are entirely my own.
I’ve read the 5 books they have out. Now I’m waiting for #6, Jace’s story, coming out in April of 2021. I have really enjoyed this set of books.
A second chance romance between the cowboy sheriff and the girl that got away. Before they are able to enjoy their long-awaited HEA Danny and Skylar must deal with her abusive ex. This kept me turning pages long after lights out.
Skylar Long and Danny Oldman had been friends in high school. Danny had a crush on Skylar that continued long past high school. She had moved away to Houston, though. Danny didn’t date much because he was married to his job. The truth was that he had never gotten over his feelings for Skylar. They had never dated but he had always wanted to ask her out but never thought he was in her league.
Danny is now the sheriff and lives in his hometown. When he stopped at a rest stop for a bit of quiet and to eat his dinner, he witnessed a man who was abusive and attacking a woman in another car. Danny quickly responded and found himself face-to-face with Skylar Long.
Skylar had been in an abusive relationship with Matt and had tried to escape but somehow he had tracked her down and was determined to drag her back to Houston with him. She feared for her life. Lucky for her, her friend, Danny, was there to save her.
As Danny continued to provide protection for Skylar, those old feelings came to the surface and he learned that Skylar had feelings for him, too. Matt’s family was very wealthy and he was determined to get Skylar back or be sure that no one else ever had her.
There was some descriptive sex in this book, which I am not particularly a fan of. There was violence and some foul language, as well. I liked the story very much and how Danny’s friends came to his rescue and helped to keep Skylar safe. The story showed how someone who is intelligent and educated can find themselves trapped in an abusive relationship and how hard it is to escape.
I was given an arc copy of this book and I willingly offer my honest review.
*4 Stars*
Copy kindly received via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
I quite enjoyed this one. The characters were all likeable, apart from the ones we’re meant to hate (and boy did I hate those ones), and it dealt with some serious real life issues.
We’ve met our hero Danny, in the other books in the series, and his friends at the East Ranch. As usual they all play a big role in the story, just this time it’s Dannys personal story.
Our hero is Skylar and I won’t say much about what’s happening with her, except that its horrible and was dealt with in a good way with the writing of this story.
It did maybe drag out a little too long, but at the same time, everything was dealt with accordingly, and there were no loose ends with the storyline.
Enjoyed this one, and would recommend. Also would be interested in reading more about the other characters.
OH this series is so damn good and this one just left me feeling more in love with Donna Grant’s writing.

A well written perfectly paced story pulling you in from the start. This one about Danny and Skylar and the journey they take. Skylar having to deal with a violent relationship she finally gets away from but the problems that she still goes through for protection.
A Cowboy Like You by Donna Grant is the 4th book of the Heart Of Texas series involving a small-town sheriff Danny Oldman. He makes his first appearance in the previous books of the Heart of Texas series. A Cowboy Like You has suspense, passion, and strong characters. The fans of the series are reacquainted with the characters like Clayton and Abbey East of The Christmas Cowboy Hero, Brice and Naomi Harper from Cowboy, Cross My Heart, and Caleb and Audrey Harper of My Favorite Cowboy.
Danny, who has never gotten over his high school crush, comes to the rescue of the only woman he has ever loved: Skylar Long who comes roaring into his life with trouble snapping at her heels. Nothing shocks Skylar more than seeing Danny again and realizing that their long-ago attraction is more powerful than ever. However, they must deal with her obsessive abusive ex-boyfriend who will stop at nothing to get her back. Their lives are interwoven in intimacy, friendships, trust, and strong support of their friends. The suspense elements in A Cowboy Like You is intense to keep any reader glue to the pages. Donna Grant is a master storyteller.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher via NetGalley and I am voluntarily reviewing it.
I just LOVED this book. Danny has appeared in all of the books in this series and we finally get to read his HEA. Danny is at odds with his life. He loves his job as sheriff but he pictured a wife and maybe a child or two by now. Unfortunately the girl that he liked in high school left for the big city of Houston right after graduation. Danny gets some dinner but doesn’t want to eat at home nor sitting down in a restaurant. He decides to eat his dinner at a rest stop that he enjoys the views from. A sports car comes into the rest stop and is shortly followed by another. The driver of the second car gets out and assaults the driver of the first vehicle. It turns out that the driver in the sports car is none other than the girl from high school, Skylar Long.
The rest of the story is one that is filled with intrigue and suspense. We get to see the prior characters return here and help Skylar and Danny. I loved how the book not only was written in the dual POV that I favor, but also it included Matt’s, Skylar’s abusive ex-boyfriend now stalker.
I was a little disappointed in Skylar’s character. She seemed to entered into sexual relationships rather easily in her life in Houston. I don’t approve of that normally and I wished her character was a little different. Having sex between Danny and Skylar as soon as it was, was a little too much for me but it didn’t affect how I adored the story. I was glued to my e-reader to hurry and see what was going to happen next. Unfortunately for me, that also leads to the conclusion of the story.
There are several scenes that may not be appropriate for anyone under the age of 18. There are some sexy scenes between Danny and Skylar as well as a scene of violence.
While this book could be read as a stand-alone, I highly encourage to start at the beginning. Seeing the relationships develop with all of the characters really will help to show the dedication and loyalty that these characters have for each other.
I look forward to several more stories in this series. There are a few more men that needs a HEA for me to read about.
I voluntarily offered to review this book with no obligations and my opinions are honest!
This was a great book !
Skylar’s boyfriend was a nightmare.
Danny was at the right place + at the right time.
Will Skylar and Danny have their second chance at love ?
Loved the characters + the storytelling !
It has all the ingredients that you need for a great book!
I can’t wait for the next book in this series.
Heart racing, action packed, emotionally thrilling journey filled with intriguing charters, witty dialog, exciting twists and undeniable passion…. was a great read from beginning to end. Really enjoyed this highly entertaining adventure!
A fantastic read that was fast-paced, well written with well developed characters, danger, loyalty, heart-stopping suspense that kept me on the edge of my seat and had me totally immersed in all that was happening and didn’t want it to end when I got to the last page. I loved the attraction, sizzling chemistry and steamy romance between handsome Sheriff Danny Oldman and Skylar Long who returns to her hometown while trying to escape her abusive and obsessive boyfriend. Ms. Grant blew me away with “A Cowboy Like You” and I look forward to more from this gifted author. I received an advance reader copy of this book from the publisher via NetGalley and am voluntarily leaving my review.
Not every knight wears armor and rides up on a white horse. Some wear a badge and drive a pickup. This is a love story that shows that there is someone out there for everyone. Just sometimes you need to wait awhile.
“she knew that if anyone could protect her, it was Danny Oldman.”
Skylar has been through hell and back in an abusive relationship. Danny, though he loves his job, finds himself hiding after he takes off his badge. What once would have been puppy love has kindled into a fiery relationship.
This is not a story for everyone. It does have some elements that may trigger some readers with events of domestic abuse. But it is told well, with compassion and strength. This is another novel by Donna Grant where you find yourself reading into the early morning hours, because you can’t wait to see what happens to your characters. Well worth it in my eyes.
This is the first book in this series that I have read, and now I will read the rest on this series. I always like Donna’s stories and the well written characters. I received an ARC of this book for an honest review.
A Cowboy Like You by Donna Grant is book 4 in the Heart of Texas Series. This is the story of Skylar Long and Danny Oldman. I have read the previous books but feel you could make this a standalone book if you wish to do so. Danny has always had a crush on Skylar when they were younger but she left town and he stayed to become the Sheriff of the the town. Of course his feeling for her hasn’t really gone away so when she returns to town this may be his chance to win her back. Skylar had to return to her home town after her ex has become obsessed with her. So she has return which has put her back with Danny. Danny has awaken feelings in her that she thought to not have for him but danger for her still haunts her.
Welcome back to Baxter County where the alpha men are hot. County Sheriff Danny Oldman is in a rut. He works all the time. Sure he has friends but sometimes he wishes for the one special person to share his life with. Now the women who have married these men are not wilting flowers. Skylar Long is on the run. She is trying to get away from her abusive boyfriend. She stops at the one spot where the sheriff likes to relax. As her boyfriend tries to physically assault her, the sheriff arrests him. When he sees who it is, he realizes she was the one who got away. Skylar has always walked to her own beat. She likes her independence. Little does she know that it is all about to change. Danny is trying to keep her safe and stay away from her. Old feelings are there but the time is not right. Skylar has other ideas. When it comes to down to who protects whom, they both win.
OMG! What a freaking awesome book!
This is the story of Danny, the sheriff in a small Texas town, and a woman who is being assaulted at a rest area. After arresting the man, Danny turns his attention to the woman he saves. It is then he realizes that the woman is someone he knew in high school. As it turns out, Skylar was trying to leave an abusive boyfriend, but her previous attempts failed. This time, however, she is successful due to Danny’s intervention.
The boyfriend is the son of one of the wealthiest families in Texas.
This novel spotlights the difficulty that actual women face everyday when they try to get out of an abusive relationship. The “he said/she said” is only the tip of the iceberg. The author has done amazing research in recreating the many difficulties that abused women face. While Skylar and Danny find their HEA ending, many women do not. Although spotlighting the problems women encounter while in a toxic relationship, this story is so much more. Kidnappings and attempted murder bring this story to a nail-biting climax. Excellent storytelling and a fabulous plot give this book 5 stars!
This is the first Heart of Texas Book I have read. I mainly stick to Paranormal Romance genres. But since Donna Grant is one of my favorite authors and I got an ARC I decided to give it a try. I am so glad I did. Although this book had parts that made me sad and feel for the main characters, Donna writes such great stories that I think the sadness made the book more real. I will definitely read the first 3 books in the series to get to know the other characters better.
Wow, great story especially towards the end where I raced through it so fast.
This story is a scary reality for women who connect with obsessed men. Skylar fled back to her hometown and her high school crush. This could be a second chance for them if she survives.
Love the small town feel where everyone is family. The drama, action and romance made for a very entertaining story.
