“Filled with passion, suspense, and strong characters.”–Rendezvous with Romance on My Favorite Cowboy (5 stars)

I have been looking forward to Sheriff Danny Oldman’s story in the Heart of Texas Series since the end of My favorite Cowboy and Donna Grant does not disappoint. This hard working, loyal, kind hearted man has his hands full when his former high school crush, Skylar Long, returns unexpectedly bringing trouble in the form of an obsessive ex-boyfriend with her. A page turner full of drama, suspense, a villainous ex, and a second chance at love. Of course, the West’s and Harper’s are there to lend a hand, giving you another glimpse into an extended family that is willing to do anything for friends they consider family.
A Cowboy Like You is the fourth book in Donna Grant’s contemporary romance series Heart of Texas. If you haven’t read the previous books, just jump right on in; you won’t be lost at all. I read the previous book and really enjoyed it, so I was excited to get an ARC of the latest installment. The last book was very good…but this one was great! I will add a trigger warning to my review: This book deals with domestic violence.
Danny Oldman is the Sheriff of Lone Star, Texas. He doesn’t have much of a dating life; everyone thinks he is married to his job. To Danny, it’s more complicated than that: his heart still belongs to Skylar Long, his crush in high school. While eating dinner at a rest stop in his truck, a car pulls into the parking lot, shortly followed by another vehicle. Danny sees violence break out and jumps in to stop it. The woman in the car is Skylar, of all people, being abused by her boyfriend Matt, from whom she was on the run. The man is arrested, and Danny brings Skylar to the home of his friends who can keep her safe. Apparently all the old feelings are still there between Danny and Skylar. However, Matt is NOT going to let Skylar leave him; will Danny be able to keep her safe?
I loved the romance between Danny and Skylar. What I really enjoyed was the lack of “will they or won’t they”. They admitted their feelings and didn’t play games. It was great seeing Danny’s friends from previous books, and how protective they all became of Skylar. I believe the issue of domestic violence was dealt with in an honest manner. Skylar was embarrassed that she didn’t tell anyone about the first time Matt abused her, but when it happened again she knew she had to escape. Things became very intense when Matt escalated his attempts to coerce Skylar to come back to him. There was exciting action near the end; thank goodness I had the weekend to read this, because I did NOT want to put this story down!
I received an ARC of this book courtesy of the publisher and NetGalley. I received no compensation for my review, and all thoughts and opinions expressed are entirely my own.
Heart of Texas #4, Finally Danny Oldman!!! You can always count on Danny to be there to help, he loves helping people and that’s one reason he went into law enforcement and became Sheriff. He’s played a pivotal role in the last three books now it’s time for him to finally get his HEA. I love Donna Grant’s Contemporary Western and throw in a bit of suspense and I’m in hog heaven. I inhaled this book from start to finish I did nothing but read this book for the whole day because I could not tear myself away from it.
Danny is dedicated to his job he loves it and the people of his county, but that doesn’t stop him from being lonely. Especially since his best friend got to marry the perfect woman and has great kids. Danny has never let go of feelings for the one girl he never asked out in high school. Skylar Long never let anyone get really close no one ever compared to her high school crush. She finally did settle on Matt, a guy she thought was good but she found out after they moved in together that he was psychotic. After the third month she got the courage to leave just getting in her car and driving not realizing she was headed back to her hometown until she crossed the county line. Luck was with Skylar that night not just driving to her hometown like it was a beacon calling her home but because when she finally did stop and Matt caught up with her Danny was right there to witness the initial assault and arrest Matt.
Finally reunited after all those years Danny tries to stay professional but neither Skylar or him are willing to lose another minute apart. Unfortunately Matt comes from a very rich family that will stop at nothing to keep their family name clean even if that means letting their son get away with murder. Lucky for Danny he has the best friends he could ask for and together they will protect Skylar.
Overall, it was a great book. I love the characters, I love the series. Each book is a standalone. I can’t wait for the next two books.

This ‘Heart of Texas’ romance is an intense, thrilling read with a sweet heartwarming romance that makes even the Grinch believe in HEAs. The chemistry between these two strong, stand out characters sizzles from every page and the relationship between them is sweet and passionate and full of emotions that makes it easy for the readers to relate to and understand what motivates these characters.
The plot is fast paced and full of suspense and excitement that builds throughout the story keeping the readers fixated on what’s happening and their toes bounding on the floor in anticipation. Some twists that come from the couple themselves, some twists that comes from the ex-worm and some twists that comes from the ex-worm’s family keeps everyone on their toes and adds to the excitement while some violence breaks readers hearts and has them calling for the ex-worms head. This entertaining read is full friends, a thrilling conclusion to the bad guy and a holiday ending worthy of the season.
Danny and Skylar’s second chance love story in A Cowboy Like You, book four in the Heart of Texas series by Donna Grant, was an amazing, and enjoyable tale. Trigger Warning: at the heart of this story is a woman unexpectedly being in and attempting to leave an abusive relationship; it can be graphic.
Lone Star sheriff Danny Oldman is still single and tells anyone who asks that it’s because he is married to his job; keeping keeping the people of his beloved Texas hometown safe. The truth is, Danny is still pining for his high school crush who left town after graduation. Skylar Long never expected to return to her hometown but finds herself heading there as she fled Houston and her possessive boyfriend; the man of her dreams turned out to be a nightmare of abuse. Seeing Danny again surprises Skylar, realizing that their long-ago attraction is still there and more powerful than ever. Danny’s number one priority is to keep Skylar safe and hidden from her wealthy, powerful ex before this sadistic man finds her and harms her again.
Ms. Grant wrote an intense, emotional and exciting romantic suspense that is not to be missed. She provided a tale rich with sexual chemistry, suspense, a dysfunctional family, fear, and endearing characters giving Danny and Skylar a chance at love, happiness, and a future neither expected. I highly recommend A Cowboy Like You to other readers.
I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book.
A COWBOY LIKE YOU is the fourth instalment in Donna Grant’s contemporary, adult HEART OF TEXAS romantics suspense series . This is Lone Star sheriff Danny Oldman, and Skylar Long’s story line. A COWBOY LIKE YOU can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty. Any important information from the previous story lines is revealed where necessary.
Told from several third person perspectives including Danny and Skylar A COWBOY LIKE YOU follows the building relationship between Lone Star sheriff Danny Oldman, and Skylar Long. Years earlier Skylar had fallen for her high school crush Danny Oldman but Skylar believed Danny never knew Skylar existed. Fast forward to present day wherein Skylar has returned to her hometown in an effort to escape her abusive past. A parking lot confrontation with her ex Matt Gaudet finds Sheriff Danny Oldman rescuing our heroine, a woman he has not been unable to get out of his mind. What ensues is the building relationship between Skylar and Danny, and the potential fall-out as Skylar’s past is determined to destroy the man with whom our heroine has fallen in love.
Danny Oldman has never forgotten about Skylar Long. With her return home, Danny finds himself looking forward to something more with our story line heroine but Skylar’s past is seeking revenge for perceived sins, rejection and embarrassment, revenge that pulls Danny into a world out of his control. Skylar is desperate to escape the abuse of her most recent ex but Matt Gaudet has a reputation buried by his family’s money, a reputation that is dangerous and dark.
The relationship between Danny and Skylar is a high school friends to lovers; a relationship based on mutual attraction and the fear of rejection. Danny is desperate to start a romance with our story line heroine but struggles with the threats against her life, and the people she loves. The $ex scenes are intimate and passionate without the use of over the top, sexually graphic language and text.
There is a large ensemble cast of secondary and supporting characters including Navy SEAL Clayton East and Abby Harper (The Christmas Cowboy Hero #1), Brice Harper (Cowboy Cross My Heart #2), former Green Beret Caleb Harper and veterinarian Audrey Martinez (My Favorite Cowboy #3); Jace Wilder; Cooper Owens; Skylar’s ex Matt Gaudet, his brother Spencer as well as the indulgent parents.
A COWBOY LIKE YOU is a story of abuse, power and control; of vengeance and betrayal; of love and happily ever after. The premise is exciting and engaging; the characters are energetic and colorful; the romance is seductive and sexy. A COWBOY LIKE YOU is a wonderfully spirited addition to the author’s Heart of Texas series.
Danny finally gets his HEA in this cowboy romance meets romantic suspense!
Sheriff Danny Oldman has been a steady presence in the Heart of Texas series, always there to help the East-Harper family and do what’s right, and now it’s his turn to find love and happiness…but not without some obstacles and more than a bit of danger in A Cowboy Like You.
Skylar is trying to escape an abusive relationship and ends up on the road to her home town and the boy that was always willing to help and fight for the underdog, the boy who’s now the sheriff. Little does she know that the sheriff as always felt she was the one who got away and he’s not about to let any history repeat itself, not on his watch.
Skylar’s journey may be hard for some readers (see content warning below) but I felt that it showed the complexity of abusive relationships and how just leaving isn’t always the end. Danny’s love and support while keeping a firm grip on reality was just what Skylar needed and was so true to his character that we knew what he was thinking and feeling before she did.
I loved getting the to catch up with the Easts and Harper brothers as well as Jace and Cooper. I’m also really intrigued by Leslie, Cash, and Chief Ryan Wells. (I kind of really want a M/M between Jace and Ryan after that last scene in A Cowboy Like You!) I can’t wait for more Heart of Texas stories.
Content Warning: on the page domestic violence and retellings of previous abuse.
I received a complimentary review copy of this book but all opinions are my own.
A good book with just enough drama, suspense, second chance romance! Has quite a bit of emotions throughout. My only thing is that it moved a bit fast with Skylar just out of an abusive relationship and then making out with Danny shortly after? It’s possible but a little unbelievable as Skylar would need some time to heal, learn to trust and love again. Usually abused women can’t just flip a switch. Other than that the book is great and a page turner! I would suggest to add it to your TBR list. Donna Grant did a great job creating wonderful characters and a telling a great story.
Danny is feeling dissatisfaction with his life. Oh sure, he likes his job as a sheriff, has great friends, and his town is wonderful, but he doesn’t have anyone at home to share his heart with. Until he rescues someone from his past one night. Skylar was the girl he had always crushed on, but never made a move on back in high school. He always thought she was destined for bigger and better things than him, so when she moved out of their small town and into the city, he knew for sure he wasn’t good enough. But now she’s back, trying to escape her abusive ex. Can Danny get the woman of his dreams this time? And protect her from someone with more money than sense, and a family who always bails him out of trouble?
I really enjoyed A Cowboy Like You. It’s sweet and heartfelt, and intense and action-packed, too. Sounds like a weird combination, but it really works here. Skylar and Danny are a wonderful couple with passionate chemistry and lots of love to spare. The secondary cast was as excellent as Danny and Skylar and the writing is top notch. 4 heartfelt stars!
A Cowboy Like you is the fourth book in the Heart of Texas Series by Donna Grant. This is the first book of this series that I have read, but was able to follow the story line and figure out the relationship of the other parties to each other with no problem. I will warn that this book does have violence in it and there is scenes with domestic violence in it. This book also has some suspense in it. This story is a second chance love story between Danny Oldman, a sheriff, and former classmate Skyler Long. Skyler escapes from her abusive boyfriend and ends up back in her hometown where Danny helps her extricate herself from the abusive relationship. I liked how the relationship built between Danny and Skyler. It was nice to see how her relationships built with the other characters in the book and series. A great book and a great read. I definitely would recommend this book (with the aforementioned warnings).
I did receive an ARC of the book from the author for an honest review.
I received this book as an ARC but the opinion is my own. As always it was very well written. If you like cowboys and contemporary romance then this is the book for you!
This is an awesome read. I highly recommend this book.
Donna Grant is an amazing author who can write any genre. All I can say is WOW I have laughed cried and shouted with joy throughout this book! I am giving this book 4 stars Donna Grant’s books are so easy to read and if you haven’t read her books before this one will certainly leave you wanting more. Pre order or buy now you will not be disappointed I am so looking forward to all the future novels in this series .
Wonderful modern-day western style romance. Ms. Grant did a awesome job developing all the characters especially Danny and Skylar. This is the second book in this series of four I’ve had the pleasure of reading. The author gave a good background on how Danny and Skylar knew one another in the past. Skylar is running from her abusive, wealthy ex-boyfriend. He will stop at nothing to get what he wants even if that means killing people. Danny is a well loved and respected sheriff and Skylar has done well for herself during her time away. I received a complementary copy of this book via Net Galley and chose to write a review. I look forward to reading future books by Ms. Grant.
I really loved this book. I have not read the other books in the series but I am correcting that ASAP! I love the characters and the way the story really develops their story! Can’t wait for the next one in the series!!!!
Sheriff Danny Oldman is just drifting through life. He often spends his off time on his own, not wanting to be around people and thinking about the one girl he can’t seem to forget. One night, having stopped to enjoy his favorite view of the countryside, he winds up instead rescuing a damsel in distress. He’s surprised to find the damsel is his long ago crush, Skylar Long. She ran from her abusive and highly connected boyfriend, only she didn’t run fast enough. Danny’s protective instincts kick in immediately. With no where else to turn, Skylar reluctantly accepts his help, which comes with the help of many previous couples from the earlier Heart of Texas stories.
I’ve loved the Hear of Texas stories since The Christmas Cowboy Hero. Like that first story, this book is a can’t put down read. I was ready to re-read it the minute I finished it. If you haven’t read this series yet, what are you waiting for?
I love Donna Grant’s sweet, sexy cowboys!
This book has it all.
Danny and Skylar are great together. Their chemistry is off the charts. I especially love that they are former classmates.
Having the ‘gang’ altogether again is something special!
The action scene at the end had me chewing on my fingernails.
Donna Grant is one of my favorite authors and this book showcases her talent in the best way.
If sweet, sexy cowboys who don’t hesitate to put they’re woman first is your jam, then don’t wait, jump into this series.
Thank you Donna for the opportunity to read and review this book.
I do enjoy reading this author other than paranormal because she seems to have that gift to take us away into where ever she wants to take us. In here we meet up with Danny whom is also Lone Star Sheriff that can arrest us anytime he wants. We also get to know what drove Skylar back home with seeing the sparks start to sizzle once again. Drama will do its deed escalating as we become more into this. Put in some suspense and couple it with second chance that this one had me staying in this place until I seen who is left.
A well-written story that handles the tough situation of abusive relationships. Skylar Long regains her strength with the help of Sherriff Danny Oldman and his friends. The characters are wonderful. and the story moves along at a quick pace. I received a copy through Netgalley and I am voluntarily giving my review.
A Heartstopping Intense Read
This was incredible. Skylar comes back to the small town with an entrance that won’t soon leave my mind. The story just escalates from there with the two mains having true feelings for each other. Skylar however, does have that meniacal Xboyfriend after her who won’t stop trying to get her back. I was engrossed as scenes unfolded and events played out. I am an impatient reader tho, so did get bogged down a bit in a few places, still an awesome read. It was high on drama with a lot of action, less on romance, but the chemistry was there.
I do think my heart stopped toward the end, now I can take a deep breath and sigh with that Happy Ending Relief!
