This story is one of the best in the series. Danny Oldman is a sheriff , a loner who still misses the one girl from HS that had his heart.
Skylar Long is that girl. She left town to experience the big city. Moved to Houston and made a name for herself. Sadly, she also had a relationship with a man that was an abuser. She leaves Matt and drives to her hometown, not realizing that her ex had followed her. Danny comes to her rescue . From that point on, the action is non-stop. Meanwhile, the relationship develops, but Skylar seems unable to get rid of Matt.
While the story was engaging and the characters well developed, it was the subject matter that really was the star.
Domestic abuse exists in all social classes. In this case, the wealthy family enabled the abuser, and tried to defame the abused. A situation that is very real.
Kudos to the author for the courage in delving with this subject matter.
I was entrusted a copy of this book by Netgalley and St. Martins . The opinions expressed are solely my own.
This was my first book by Donna Grant. It was an enjoyable read, somewhat predictable but an easy read. If you want to read something that makes you feel good at the end, this should fit the bill.
Danny works hard at his job. It’s difficult being the sheriff. While eating his dinner at a rest area, he rescues an abused woman from her violent boyfriend. Danny is dedicated professional. He follows the letter of the law. I wish that he didn’t feel so isolated. It’s ironic that the woman he rescues is his old high school crush. Skylar is beautiful, funny and intelligent. How did she find herself in this situation? I sympathized with her. I was glad that she had the courage to leave. It’s too bad that the controlling monster won’t let her go. I feel strongly about domestic violence. I wanted justice served. I didn’t want Skylar’s abuser to avoid punishment because he and his family were well known and wealthy. I hated that the victim was vilified by the press. Donna Grant wrote an exciting and emotional story. The romance that developed between Danny and Skylar was special. They made a perfect couple. Also, I enjoyed seeing all the familiar characters. This story pulled me in. I enjoyed the setting and the intense story. A Cowboy Like You is a great addition to the Heart of Texas series.
I received a copy of this book which I voluntarily read and reviewed. My comments are my honest opinion.
While this may be the 4th book in the Heart of Texas series, it can absolutely be read as a stand alone! This one is about Danny Oldman and Skylar Long. Danny is the sheriff of the small town that he and Skylar grew up in. Danny is feeling like he is missing something in his life and after watching his friend find their happiness, he can’t help but feeling like an outsider. And it doesn’t help that he still thinks about the one girl that he never even dated and wonders what could have been. Skylar never thought she would have to run in the middle of the night, nor that she would end up back in her hometown. But she is desperate and she will do whatever she has to in order to be safe from her crazy boyfriend. But she certainly doesn’t expect that the man who saves her will be Danny. Or that the attraction she had to him in high school would still be there. But can they find out what they mean to each other while still keeping Skylar safe from her ex?
I absolutely loved this one! There is drama, suspense, along with this sweet, loyal, and protective man. I loved that they got their second chance but that it also brings to light a serious issue and how hard it truly can be for women to get away from someone like her ex. Skylar is this smart, beautiful, and strong woman who went through something that no woman should ever have to go through but she stood up for herself even when she was afraid. And she not only stood up for herself, she stood up for the man she fell in love with as well. I loved them and their story!! And of course I loved the snippets of past characters and hopefully other side characters that need their own stories as well!!
In this book, we get to read Danny Oldman’s story. He is the sheriff who has helped both the Harper’s and Easton’s in earlier books. Danny is a stand-up kind of guy, loyal and committed to his job. He works really long hours and is starting to have trouble dealing with after effects of the job. He is lonely, always by himself even though he has great friends in both the Harper’s and Easton’s. He drinks most nights just to
get to sleep. One night when he just can’t go home to a dark, empty house he picks up dinner and goes to a
rest stop to eat as it has the best view in town.
While there he is witness to a very angry man trying to pull a young women out of her car.l He breaks one of the windows on her car, at which point Danny gets involved and arrest the guy, Matt for threatening and assaulting the women.
When he goes to the the woman out of her to make sure she is OK, he is shocked to see she is
Skylar Long the one girl he had a crush on all thru high school. Skylar is also shocked to see him after all this time. She always liked him in high school.
This story lets us see the many scenes behind domestic assault. Matt’s family is very rich, political family
who always buy or pay off anyone who gets in their way. If Matt’s family doesn’t help him he hires those who will do any job for money.
This is a very intense, fast moving story that will run you thru all the emotions. The hate of Matt and what he does to break up Danny and Skylar will have you crying out loud. What they both are put thru will show how strong women have to be to get out of these bad relationships.
This is a wonderful book, that should not be missed. You will learn a lot, cry some and laugh some too.
Ending is sad and wonderfully romance at the same time.
Be sure and get your copy. I received and ARC from Net Gallery and am giving my honest opinion.
Back in high school she was the girl his heart wanted, but never really got the chance to have, Skylar Long owned his heart in a way no else ever could. Through the years he has thought about her, wondered where life had taken her, and if she was happy… never expecting to get the chance to ask her the questions himself.
But then fate, and crappy circumstances, have brought her back to town, and in dire need of someone to look out for her, and keep her obsessive ex-boyfriend at bay. When Danny Oldman spots a woman being hassled by a man he immediately steps in to protect her, then when their eyes connect he realizes that he is coming to the aid of the woman who has owned his heart for years. His protective nature and badge help steer the volatile man away, but his instincts tell him that he won’t be gone for long. Skylar needs help and he wants to be the man to protect her, and give her a safe place to land… maybe, just maybe he’ll finally get his girl!
A Cowboy Like You is a story of second chances, new beginnings, finding love, and healing… a story equipped with everything necessary to squeeze your heart in all the right places! I thoroughly enjoyed this newest installment in the Heart of Texas series, as the previous installments it came brimming with toe curling romance, heartfelt emotion, and bits of suspense. I’ve got to say though this one stole the top seat as my favorite, the moment Danny wandered onto the page and saved Skylar from her ex’s clutches he had my heart, nothing is sexier than a protective cowboy! Between the lingering suspense, and blossoming romance this one had my full attention from beginning to end… it was downright addictive! If you like romantic suspense stories then I highly suggest you get your hands on this one, it has the perfect balance of both to keep you captivated and swimming in feels throughout!
I requested an advanced copy of this title from the publisher, via NetGalley request, and I am voluntarily leaving my honest and unbiased opinion.
I really have enjoyed the Heart of Texas series by Donna Grant. Each story can be read as a stand alone but the characters pop up in other books. Each story is about a hot Alpha male & a sexy damsel in some form of distress. In A Cowboy Like You, Skylar is trying to escape an abusive relationship from a member of a rich political family. In her fear, her subconscious had her steering her car towards her old hometown. Danny is an old classmate of Skylar’s & is now the Sheriff. He was at the rest area when Matt attempted to forcibly pull Skylar from her car, threatening her the whole time. When Danny attested Matt, it started a series of events pulling all of the friends in to make sure Danny & Skylar survive.
The author gets all of the details right – from the small town attitudes to the rich privilege. I really liked the way the town pulled together behind one of their own, believing her over Matt’s lies. The possessive, dangerous vibe from Matt’s character & the belief he could get away with it would spark fear in anyone. You could feel the fear in Skylar’s actions, prose & movements. This was a really good second chance at love story & a great addition to the series!
How dare he think he can get away with abusing Skylar? Doesn’t he know that she has an army of friends and a very protective, honest and loyal alpha man? Reuniting with Skylar finally gives Danny a chance at not being lonely. She is not the one that got away, she is the one that he made the mistake of never feeling secure enough to take the shot. When Skylar comes back to town dragging a world of trouble behind her, he is at the right spot at the right time. He is the perfect guy to help her. And this time around even when circumstances are not the best, he is not missing his chance with her.
Getting away from a crazy powerful ex is a really tough situation. So in this story you can find a strong willed woman, action, excitement, a big protective, dedicated and honest man and a big supportive group of friends that are more like a family than anything else. This book is full of great entertaining edge of your seat moments and good romantic ones too.
I think of this series this one had been my favorite..We get reacquainted with Danny the towns sheriff and he finds himself lonely, and on one specific night he was remembering his high school crush the only girl he ever really thought of. Skylar is running for her life from her abusive boyfriend, while running she stops at a rest area and about to get killed when Danny comes to her rescue, Danny the guy she had a crush on in high school. Danny rescues Skylar but could not believe it, it must be fate. Lies are revealed about the ex and just trying to keep her safe, luckily for them they have the help of the Harpers and Eastons..Enjoy!
rcvd an ARc at no cost to author..(netgalley) Voluntarily reviewed with my own thoughts and opinions
While trying to escape an abusive relationship Skylar Long is rescued by the local sheriff, Danny Oldman. Turn out the Danny Oldman has had a crush on Sklyar since high school. He’s in the right place at the right time to help. Will Skylar finally be free? I thoroughly enjoyed this story not realizing it was set around Christmas. I did feel the story drug on at some points to whereI it could have been wrapped up sooner than it was. The story is a tough one because of physical and mental abuse. The author did a job developing the characters and keeping me in suspense as to when the “villain”, Matt, would strike again. The tension between Danny and Skylar was pretty hot and their time between the sheets was written well. I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Ohhhh, I really loved this one! It has a typical theme for suspense that I have read, but I loved how the story flowed from beginning to end. It sucked me in. Danny and Skylar, loved this couple.
I received this book at my request and have voluntarily left this unbiased review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.
I really liked Danny. He seemed to subconsciously wait for Skylar to come back into his life. He had a crush on her in High School and she moved away as soon as they graduated. He never got serious with anyone else in the time they were apart and I like that it might have been because his heart was already taken. Skylar also had a crush on Danny in high school. If only these two had the guts to approach each other, but then Danny had a point when he said it just wasn’t their time yet. Great couple. This also had some pretty exciting drama with the ex stalking Skylar and his very, rich family trying to bail him out. Things escalated pretty quickly which made for a fast paced read. I loved how all the guys banded together, and the women too. There is still several single men in this tight group so I expect more to come in this series.
**I received a copy of a Cowboy Like You from Social Butterfly PR and Net Galley in exchange for a voluntary and honest review. My opinions and thoughts weren’t solicited in any way.**
A Cowboy Like You by Donna Grant is the fourth book in her Heart of Texas series. I’ve read all of them as well as her Son’s of Texas series too. But I have to tell you I loved this book, because of the TLC Ms. Grant took with the subject of a possessive and abusive boyfriend who doesn’t understand the word NO. *There are triggers Domestic Abuse and stalker boyfriend.*
Danny Oldman is the Sheriff of Lone Star and longs for the family that all of his friends have but when he happens to be in the right place at the right time to rescue Skylar Long from her abusive boyfriend. They went to school and lost track after they graduated. Now Skylar needs his help when her ex-boyfriend follows her to Lone Star. But what she doesn’t know is there is a lot more she didn’t know about Matt Gaudet and his family who think money will solve everything or make it go away. It takes everyone from Clayton,Abby, Caleb, Audrey, Brice, Naomi and Cash to help dig up dirt and keep Skylar and Danny safe when Matt goes way beyond threats.
I hope all the remaining friends find their happy ever afters.
A Cowboy Like You was quite the read! Intense drama, great suspense, one charmingly sweet cowboy, and a stronger-than-she-knows heroine, there was so much happening, I couldn’t turn away! I haven’t read previous books in this series and had no trouble following who’s who. However, my curiosity was definitely engaged about recurring characters and I can’t wait to read this backlist!
Possible triggers-domestic abuse/stalking
I received an ARC from NetGalley and this is my honest review.
That’s right! Everyone needs a cowboy like Danny!!
This was the best of all the series so far. I have read and loved each one of the stories in this series. I see many more characters about which to write. Every one of these characters is an entity unto himself. These are the friends I would want to have should the need arise. Abby and Clayton are the best. Ms. Grant, if you’ve based them on real people in your life, please send me in their direction. And Danny….what can you say about a hero such as him. He’s a man who puts everyone else first. One can’t even say he puts himself last because he doesn’t even enter the equation. He’s been active in each story and always a hero in my book.
I cannot wait for the next installment! If the next one’s are as well-written, we have a long reading life ahead of us.
This book was gifted to me by NetGalley and the author in return for an honest review.
A Cowboy Like You is an excellent second chance romance by Donna Grant. Ms. Grant has provided readers with a well-written story filled with phenomenal characters. Danny is the county sheriff and finds himself sitting at the rest area having dinner alone. Skylar is on the run, she’s escaped her abusive boyfriend and is determined to get away from him this time. Danny and Skylar’s story is loaded with drama, humor, spice, action and suspense. I enjoyed reading A Cowboy Like You and look forward to reading more from Donna Grant in the future. A Cowboy Like You is book 4 of the Heart of Texas Series but can be read as a standalone. This is a complete book, not a cliff-hanger.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book that I received from NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
