In 1558, the ancient stones of Kingsbridge Cathedral look down on a city torn apart by religious conflict. As power in England shifts precariously between Catholics and Protestants, royalty and commoners clash, testing friendship, loyalty, and love.
Ned Willard wants nothing more than to marry Margery Fitzgerald. But when the lovers find themselves on opposing sides of the religious conflict dividing the country, Ned goes to work for Princess Elizabeth. When she becomes queen, all Europe turns against England. The shrewd, determined young monarch sets up the country’s first secret service to give her early warning of assassination plots, rebellions, and invasion plans. Over a turbulent half century, the love between Ned and Margery seems doomed as extremism sparks violence from Edinburgh to Geneva. Elizabeth clings to her throne and her principles, protected by a small, dedicated group of resourceful spies and courageous secret agents.
The real enemies, then as now, are not the rival religions. The true battle pitches those who believe in tolerance and compromise against the tyrants who would impose their ideas on everyone else—no matter what the cost.
Set during one of the most turbulent and revolutionary times in history, A Column of Fire is one of Follett’s most exciting and ambitious works yet. It will delight longtime fans of the Kingsbridge series and is the perfect introduction for readers new to Ken Follett.

It was good but not up to the standards set by the previous two books in the series. I am anxiously awaiting the prequel called The Evening and the Morning scheduled to come out in Sept. of 2020.
Not his best. Didn’t hold my interest like Pillars of the Earth.
Loved all 3 books in this trilogy and waited years for this one. Characters are deep and you feel immersed in history.
The 3rd book in the Kingsbridge series. Love Follett’s storytelling & interesting characters. If you read Pillars of the Earth & World Without End, this is a must read.
This is the second book of the Kingsbridge Trilogy by Ken Follett. As with Pillars of the Earth, it was a very informative and realistic trip through the history of the time of the reign of Queen Elizabeth I and the Protestant Reformation. It helps make the history come alive so that you feel the dangers and difficulties of actually living during this period in time. It’s definitely a worthwhile read. I thoroughly enjoyed it.
Ken Follet is one of my favorites!
I love all of Ken Follett’s work!
If you are interested in History, Ken Follett is wonderful.
Something new from Ken Follett. A trilogy about the building of cathedrals, how it started, the early people who figured out how to do it, and the story of their lives. I love fictional generational books. On book 3 right now
Always love Ken Follett’s books and this one did not disappoint.
Love the three book series by Ken Follet. If you love historical fiction , architecture or history of Europe you should love all three of the books in this series!
Not his most exciting book. Read like a history book. Very informative though.
I love Ken Follett, he grips you from the first page until the end. He always leaves you wanting more.
I have read all three books in the series, Pillar of the Earth is still my fav but I enjoyed reading all. I love that the time period is studied so closely.
Huge disappointment after reading the first two in this trilogy.
Understanding more about the power of the Church and the politics of the Elizabethan Era.
Ken Follett continues his narrative about the people in Knightsbridge by weaving them into the historical events during the conflict between Catholics and Protestants during the reign of Elizabeth and her half-sister, Mary Stuart. Follett has a wonderful way with words and a keen eye for history. Loved it!
Ken Follet is one of my favorite authors. However, this was not one of his best books. Don’t waste your time.
A wonderful addition to Pilars of the Earth & World Without End. Ken Follett never disappoints.
entertained by working historical events and people into the plot line. It
