A Cold Dark Promise is a forty-thousand word novella that takes place during the week leading up to the wedding of former CIA assassin Alex Parker to FBI Agent Mallory Rooney, who first meet in the novel, A Cold Dark Place. A Cold Dark Promise can be read as a standalone novella, but readers will get more enjoyment if they read some of the other books in the series first.

I read book 1 and really liked it. I decided I should save the rest of the series and only read one occasionally. That was dumb. Life’s too short to save good books when you can read them now. So I binged, reading 9 books in 16 days. It was glorious. I especially enjoy how the main characters from book 1 become supporting characters in book 2, etc. It’s a great way to have some of the continuity of a sequel without the boredom of typical sequels.
Life interfered once or twice, but other than that, I never put one of these down until I finished it.
First off, this book should not be read until you’ve read all the previous books in the series. Go read those books right now. Okay. You’ve done that now? Good. Now you’re going to love this novella. It centers around Alex from book one but it also features almost every other character that we’ve met along the way in some role or another. There is action. It’s sweet and sexy. There’s a new couple in addition to all the known characters that gets a little bit of a sexy start. All in all, I loved this book but that’s to be expected since I love this whole series and every character haha. If you’re reading this and haven’t started this series yet, seriously! Go do it now!

“Doubt thou the stars are fire;
Doubt that the sun doth move;
Doubt truth to be a liar;
But never doubt I love.” ― William Shakespeare, Hamlet
A Cold Dark Promise is the ninth book in Toni Anderson’s Cold Justice series. I love that this book wasn’t just about Alex and Mallory, even though they were main focus, it was also about Jane Sanders and Jack Reilly and other team members like Killion, Noah and Logan, which was great to catch up on them and see them in action but also to see them work as a team.
I really loved this book/novella. Everything was on point, there was equality between suspense and romance and also a little light moments. (*cough* Can we have more novellas like this one for each couple *cough*)
I loved the friendship between Alex and Frazer because it showed not only how much they care about each other and the special bond they share but also Alex’s development from enigmatic, lone wolf living in the shadows to a more compassionate person who starts letting people in, makes jokes, has friendships and is going to marry the love of his life.
It’s so great to read about Alex and Mallory again. I love these two and their unconventional love story and undeniable/unconditional love/connection they have. But please don’t scare my heart like that. My poor Alex. The faith Mal has in Alex and how much Alex loves her are the two of the most beautiful things I have read in this book. I love how open and honest, loving and caring they are with each other.
This love is ours. – Anonymus
I was always curious about Jane when I was introduced to her in Alex’s book. Honestly I didn’t like her but now that I found out about her background she won me over. Jack Reilly is a really good guy: loving, caring, protective and a bodyguard. I love the connection he shared with Jane and how patient he was with her but also protective. The more time they spend with each other the more feelings grow. So glad they both got their happy ending and are going to explore what’s between them.
HIGHLY RECOMMEND YOU TO READ THIS SERIES, YOU WON’T REGRET IT.
It was nice to meet again Alex, the main character of A Cold Dark Place. It is obvious that over time and other six books he became even better and he deserved to have a (another) book of his own, even if only a novella. The plus is that this novella gives a fine story. And a bit disappointing for me, because jumping over the other six volumes caused me to lose a lot of interesting protagonists. Yes, even if Alex has the leading role, there are many other nice and interesting characters from the previous stories that have a role to play now and I’m quite curious how they got together. For example, I cannot wait to see how the relationship between Alex and Frazer changed from “rivals” to friends.
Giving the fact that the series is a romantic suspense, Mrs. Anderson played as matchmaker one more time and created another couple. Good and bad (or apparent bad) come together for the romance fans.
With humor, some turns, good rhythm and enough of unexpected, A Cold Dark Promise is not so dark or cold but thoroughly enjoyable. Still, the significance of the title is more than meets the eye at first sight as it is impossible to think that Alex would not keep his promise!
Coming back to my initial question (https://www.bookbub.com/reviews/2276946361): my first reaction was “great!” and the second one, after the Promise, was: still great!
I had to keep it short in order to cut the losses and start reading the whole series!
PS: A nice way to prepare a wedding!

Of course Alex, being the dramatic character that he is, couldn’t just simply get married, lol. Author does an excellent job wrapping the scheduled “wedding” plans around another case for this dude. He is like James Bond to the 3rd power, Mallory is his perfect match because she understands his drive for solving the case, her love for him is on another level because he is just that type of guy. This really gets the adrenaline pumping and the emotions flying with tears of sadness and joy, loaded with shocking twist and turns that keeps the plot exciting and gripping. Great addition to the series and I am definitely looking forward to reading more of this series. I love how the author intermingles the previous characters in this series. Romance, Suspense and Adventure!!!
If tension wasn’t enough before the wedding for Alex and Mallory. A woman he doesn’t want to have anything to do with contacts him for help, her child that had been taken, would he help her. The bond of their unborn child, Alex feels a love for the baby something so foreign, and so over whelming. How can he denied to.help her. It was not simple, almost impossible, other official, friends and still showed how the event turned deadly. The best man made the impossible possible, taking his duties seriously. The characters were great, the plot was tense to the end.
I got this Audio book from Chirp. Fantastic App. Great book plenty twist and turns. I will definitely be reading more of this series and this author.
Love all of Toni Anderson’s series. Good characters and story.
