After reading A Christmas Carol, the notoriously reculsive Thomas Carlyle was ‘seized with a perfect convulsion of hospitality’ and threw not one but two Christmas dinner parties. The impact of the story may not always have been so dramatic but, along with Dickens’s other Christmas writings, it has had a lasting and significant influence upon our ideas about the Christmas spirit, and about the … season as a time for celebration, charity and memory.

I have read this almost every year around this time since I was 9. And every year I find something new. I love it.
Always a great way to get ready for the holidays and remember what’s truly important in life!
The classic Christmas tale has a message for us all year. Mankind is our business resonates with men and women of good will. And as Tiny Tim says, “God bless us, everyone!”
4.5 out of 5 stars to Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol, a story almost everyone is likely familiar with as early on as childhood. And we’ve all seen some form of this in a TV show, movie or another book, given how familiar the three ghosts of Christmas have become.
An annual December read for me, this short classic has it all. A Christmas ghost story that never fails to inspire and entertain. Beautifully written and hilarious and heartwarming.
I love the message of this book. I hope to read it again this year.
Who doesn’t love this book???
A great book on a snowy night, in front of a fire.
It is the classic tale of redemption, with a resounding message of the goodness inherent in all mankind. “I will honour Christmas in my heart, and try to keep it all the year. “
A charming read. Now I know why all the feature films and made-for-tv movies of this story are so good. I highly recommend reading this each Christmas, make it part of your tradition!!!!
So, this weekend, I finally read this book in its entirety by listening to the Tim Curry unabridged version on Audible. I’m glad I did because there’s a lot of additional details that get left out of film and abridged readings. His take on it is very dark. I still love Patrick Stewart’s abridged version simply for his powerful performance (and he does all the voices too). It’s a novella so it’s a short read and it’s public domain so you have no excuse not to read it!

This one I like to read and see during the holidays.
It’s a classic story of Christmas and the gift of love shared
I have read this book twice now, once Christmas 2015 and then Christmas 2016. The first time I rated it 4 stars, but for some reason this time around I loved it! The meaning was so much more I ‘caught’ more of the meaning the author wanted his readers to ‘get’… a must for classical readers, or just those that love the holiday season
*****
After watching various verisions of this on movie format at Christmas I have wanted to read the original story, unedited. I’m glad I finally did. And this book the writing was big enough that it wasn’t hard to read and the few illustrations that was in it was beutfiul! Out of about five different versions of the movie I’ve seen Patrick Stewart’s version is almost word for word of the book. There are some scenes that are a little different but if you want a movie version close to the book then check out his.
Although this is written with some wording that we don’t use now a days it’s not to overly done where you get lost in the language. That is what gets me in most ‘classic’ stories but this one not so much. I can see why this story became such a great classic through the years!
This is a must-read always and every Christmas!
I really love this story and no matter how many times I’ve seen the movie or read the book this is always great to enjoy during the holidays.
A Christmas Carol is the story of what Christmas means, in reality, to be kind, to be empathic, and to be generous with people around us.
a very enjoyable classic with so much message to the reader.
I don’t think I’ve ever read this one before – which is kind of shocking! I really enjoyed it, going in knowing the basic premise, and having seen it performed (and A Muppet Christmas Carol of course!). I have been making it a goal to read more Classics, even though I think they are overrated, because they are such a well-known, referenced thing, that I wanted to see more of the original works. I read Little Women at the beginning of the year, and when Tiny Tim was talked about all I could think about was Beth. Sweet, sickly, using the death/potential of death as a plot device, and I’m not sure how I feel about that, but I did find it interesting to think about. I listed to the Tim Curry narration of this, and that was amazing, definitely recommend the audio for this.
I really enjoyed this book. I’m not sure why I waited so long to read it. It puts me in the Christmas spirit. This book just puts you in the Christmas spirit. I definitely recommend it!
The book defined our Christmas holiday in the modern sense. Such characters!
A classic must read!
A wonderful classic story that I had never read. The old, British prose is a little difficult to muddle through, but it still captured my attention and heart once I got into the story. It’s like “A Wonderful Life” in that we are reminded to live our lives well while we still can…
