WARNING! If you don’t like anal sex, do not read this book! If you have any triggers (and that’s any form or degree of PTSD), do not read this book! If you have problems with anything BSDM, do not read this book! If you cannot believe that there are women who actually enjoy humiliation with their sex, do not read this book! You have been warned.
This was a difficult book to survive the first ten pages… until you realize that the sexual act depicted is NOT nonconsensual for our heroine Lucy because deep down inside, she really is a masochist with a penchant for humiliation. This is not a personality disorder. There are women out there who do get off on it. They also get off on their partners who get off being this dominant. And Emery is definitely that bastard, but he is HER bastard. My favorite quote from him: “Don’t worry, Ms. Crawford, I’m still the mean f***er you’ve come to know.”
This is, by far, the best BDSM I have ever read. Not because Emery is mean and nasty and cruel but because Pinky Cockburn (what a pen name!) knows the true basis of good BSDM relationships — true intimacy of a frightfully deep level. This is the first BDSM story I had to have my Puffs Plus next to me as well as a trashcan. This story surprised me that much.
It’s all about a newly employed, newly abandoned now single woman who needs an advance on her paycheck so that she could buy her four-year-old daughter a decent Christmas. Her new boss, unbeknownst to her, was ripped off by her now ex-husband, and he intends to be fully paid back with her on her back, bent over his desk, exposing her breasts throughout the day at her own cubicle, whatever he wants for how long he wants it. After all, she said she would do ANYTHING for that advance, all because of her daughter.
There are shocking moments of intimacy that pops up without warning. These just dig into the psyches of both our dom and sub. And boy, did Pinky develop these characters in such a short amount of pages. I do like novels far better because it takes so much time to get to this level of understanding, so imagine my surprise when I finished this novella, only to have become so sympathetic for both characters, not just Lucy. But those first ten pages were… painful. Just get beyond them to the point when you realize that Lucy DOES like pain and humiliation.
And Emery? At first, you want to hate him. But as the pages go by, I am amazed on what kind of guy he truly is. And Pinky does it in a way that doesn’t compromise that he truly is a mean f***er as he claims to be. He has dark corners that I’m sure he never thought to find a partner who would fit his sharp points as well as Lucy did. And that’s what is the true loveliness of this tale is how a dom finds that perfect sub whom he can see himself be with for the rest of his life.
Though I’m not into pain, I could only wish to have someone as darkly alpha as he is without falling into the typical formulae I’ve seen with writers who think they know how to write BDSM. Pinky does. It’s more than being tied up or humiliated. It’s more than the need to feel the sting of a well-worn leather belt. It’s all about finding someone more rare than a soul mate. It’s all about a dom who never thought he would find his sub and establish his family whom he would kill to protect.
Now THAT’s a real BDSM story!
Of course, I’d recommend this novella to those who can take it. But if you have ANY reservations about how you can handle this subject, find something else to read. You’ll miss the entire point of the story.
