The best Magical Cures book so far. Know the next one will be fantastic too. Ms. Kappes has a real talent creating stories her followers want to read, me included. I have not read a book by her that I have not loved. Whispering Falls, KY is a magical place. The citizens are peculiar and a lot of fun. All the magical beings who live in Whispering Falls have different gifts. They combine their gifts to strengthen and protect the town. Jane is a wonderful character who makes magical cures for whatever ails you. Her husband Oscar keeps the peace as the towns sheriff. Together can they solve the riddle of the crow before anyone is murdered? You need to read this book to find out, you will not be sorry you did.
This series never ceases to entertain me and, at book #12, each is better than the last one. June Heal has her hands full and it’s for the birds. Her fairy godcat, Mr. Prince Charming has given her a bird charm for her bracelet, not a casual gesture, it’s a sign she not ignore. Then her crystal ball, Madame Torres keeps making bird noises and, to top it off, a very, very rare bird, a Spangled Smokey Momoko has taken up residence in Petunia’s hairdo. The bird better stay hidden because a tour group of bird watchers has come to town and one of them, Adam, wants to capture the bird and put it in his exotic species zoo and breed it. On top of that, the very odd Karima sisters ask June to help them with a request from a (sort of) ghost. With those two ladies things can get a bit fuzzy.
As June sets about to perform a smudge ceremony little does she envision that Adam, the zoo guy, will soon be murdered and she and her policeman husband, Oscar, will have to race the clock to find the killer. The magical village rule states that they have 24 hours and then they have to turn the investigation over to the mortal, non-magical police force. The magical residents of the village all come together to find the answers and keep their magical world a secret from outsiders.
If you are new to this series, not to worry, this can stand alone very well but be warned, you may want to get your hands on the previous books in the series and line them up for some very enjoyable binge reading.
This the 12th book in the Magical Cures mystery series, but works well as a stand-alone. I’ve only read a bit of this series before, but I fully enjoyed the book and want to read the entire series in order. Tonya Kappes is one of my favorite authors and she has interwoven another very original mystery. June Heal, the main character, is likable and fascinating. I highly recommend this book and series. I was provided an ARC of this book, but the opinions are my own.
A Charming Misfortune is another wonderful installment in the Magical Cures Series by Author Tonya Kappes.
I throughly enjoy escaping into different worlds that Miss Kappas’s writes and this is one of my favorites.
Another great story from Whispering Falls June and Oscar has their hands full when a zoo owner is found dead they must find out who the killer is. This is the 12 installment if this charming cozy magical mystery I fall deeper in love with this series with each book.
I received a copy from the author for a honest review
A cute and magical small town story that will take flight once you start reading. Who knew bird watching could be so interesting and dangerous. I received a complimentary copy and I am voluntarily reviewing.
I enjoyed the mystery in A Charming Misfortune. I’m not a fan of witches and magic, but Tonya Kappes always writes interesting characters and fun mysteries.
I voluntarily read and reviewed a complimentary Advance Reader Copy.
Tonya Kappes keeps us entertained on so many levels with her different series. I love the uniqueness of Whispering Falls. Each person has their own special “talent” and manages to let tourists have a grand time without knowing what goes on behind the scene. In this story June starts her day having different bird signs come to her. She doesn’t know why, but keeps a sharp eye out using her special cat and crystal ball. An Audubon group comes to town looking for a rare bird that they heard had been seen in town. All sorts of trouble ensues as one of the group is found dead on a bird sighting campout. June must help her policeman husband solve the crime. It is a fun and interesting read. I really don’t know how Ms Kappes keeps all of her plots and characters straight but I’m glad she keeps writing them!
The Magical Cures Mysteries were my introduction to Tonya Kappes and hold a special place in my heart. Whispering Falls, Kentucky, is a truly magical place – home to June Heal, her husband Oscar, and a fantastic supporting cast of magically gifted folks. Everyone who lives and works in Whispering Falls has a gift that helps them both in their business and in keeping the community happy and healthy.
June’s gift is her intuition, which she funnels into healing potions for the magical and nonmagical alike. While it can be very helpful, her intuition also gets her into trouble – she is apt to stick her nose in places it doesn’t belong and often is led straight into dangerous situations.
In A Charming Misfortune, June’s intuition is screaming for her to listen as are her spirit guides – Madam Torres who resides in a crystal ball and Mr. Prince Charming, June’s fairy god cat. All June hears are the cooing and cawing of birds.
Even when Whispering Falls is invaded by an enthusiastic branch of the Audobon Society, hoping desperately for a glimpse of the Spangled Smoky Momoko, the trouble isn’t entirely clear. It isn’t until tragedy strikes on a bird-watching camping trip that June is thrust headlong into an investigation that puts not only her safety but that of the Spangled Smoky Momoko and Whispering Falls into jeopardy.
A Charming Misfortune is an excellent story. The pacing is quick, the plot is twisty and fun, and the characters feel like old friends. While this book can be read as a stand-alone novel, it is most satisfying if read in series order. If it is truly the last book of the Magical Cures Mysteries, it is a fine end – albeit one that leaves room for another visit to Whispering Falls.
Many thanks to Tonya Kappes for allowing me to read and review an ARC of A Charming Misfortune.
The bird watchers have descended and brought a mortal murder with them. Now everyone must rally to find the killer and save the endangered birds from unscrupulous predators. The suspects abound, was it one of their own or one of the mortal tourist bird watchers? A fun, lively romp through the world of June Heal.
Although this can easily be read without having read the others in this series, this is best read in order. No spoilers in this review, the characters in Whispering Falls will keep you entertained throughout. Plenty of twists and turn to keep you guessing, a wonderful whodunit that you’ll be glad you took a chance on. Bird watchers from an Audubon Society group in search of a rare bird, are the stars of this book, as June’s search for the murderer ensues. June and the gang are completely entertaining and there are certainly laugh out loud moments which makes Tonya Kappes books even more amazing if that’s possible. Another fun read that will satisfy any and every cozy lover. I received an advance copy of this book and the opinions expressed are unsolicited and mine alone.
Magic, mystery and murder make A Charming Misfortune a must read. June Heal with her fairy-god cat are tracking down a murderer. Why was Adam Vedder, a Zoologist, killed? Was it because of the rare bird who’s hiding in this special town? June needs answers and I wanted her to get them. I certainly didn’t want this charmed world to be revealed. It’s so much fun to escape to Whispering Falls. I enjoy watching June and Oscar work together to save the day. It’s almost as entertaining as hearing Madam Torres and Mr. Prince Charming bickering. I enjoy reading this series with its quirky characters and magical beings. The dialogue makes me laugh. It’s filled with snark and sass. The murder victim wasn’t popular but he didn’t deserve to be murdered. Watching June and her friends put together clues to find the culprit kept me reading. Her instincts are spot on. I can’t wait to return and see what’s the next challenge. Tonya Kappes has such an inventive mind. I don’t want to miss anything.
I received a copy of this book which I voluntarily read and reviewed. My comments are my honest opinion.
Another great addition to the Whispering Falls series! Best one yet in this series! I love how Ms. Kappes writes. She does a wonderful job with descriptions. You feel like you are actually there in this imaginary small town. The magical people who live there act like most people in small towns by helping their friends. And…there is always a surprise ending!
I was given an advanced copy to in exchange of my honest review.
I love, love, love June Heal and Whispering Falls-once you read the series, I know you will too! June and her friends are on the hunt for another murderer, but this time, it may be one of her dearest friends. But once again, things are not as they seem! An Audubon group comes to Whispering Falls in search of the extremely rare Spangled Smoky Momoko. Some want to just photograph it, while others want to capture it and put it in captivity and bring its species back to life. Someone just doesn’t want that to happen!
The reason I gave this story 4 stars is because I felt like, while the storyline was great, there was a lot of information that was given and then just kind of left there. For instance, the Karima sisters have a lost soul trying to reconnect with a tourist who is living. This is a big part of Chapter 1, and while it is brought up later in the book, it never really explains who the spirit is (unless it did and I just completely mis-read even though I read the book twice to be sure with the same result).
But that being said, be sure to pick this story up and give it a read-and be sure to read the other books within the series! There is a lot of fun characters and a great storyline that will make you want to visit Whispering Falls and stay. This is my favorite part of Tonya’s stories-she leaves you wanting more!
Weird things are happening in Whispering Falls but the first clues that appear are muddled so June isn’t sure just what she is suppose to do. Her crystal ball keeps making bird noises which is no help and her car Mr. Prince Charming has brought her a bird charm for her bracelet. What does it all mean is June’s first thought and starts trying to make sense of it all. When an Audubon Group comes to town looking for a rare species of birds things start to become more clear for June. Petunia shows up at her shop with the rare bird and one of the group spots it. Petunia wants to keep the bird hidden and asks June for help, she is afraid that no good can come of the group spotting the bird. June decides to set up a spotting of the bird but by midnight that night one of the group is found dead, murdered. Who killed the man and why is what June and Oscar must figure out before the group leaves town. Follow along as June uses her own brand of magic to search for a killer. In finding the killer she hopes to keep Whispering Falls out of the spotlight, so it remains the quiet and magical town it has always been. I can’t wait to see what direction the author takes June in next!
I really enjoy this series. June and her friends are trying to prevent a problem. They thought of everything and then put the plan into action. But, a murder happened anyway. They are racing to solve the murder before the suspects leave town. The man was not well liked and there are plenty of suspects. I like the surprise at the end.
This is probably one of my favorite series by Tonya Kappes, and I absolutely love all of her books! A National Audubon Society Group makes their way to Whispering Falls when they hear that a rare bird may have been spotted there. While they try to search for this bird, Adam, who tries to find rare species and place in his exotic zoo, shows up with ties to a few members of the group, ends up murdered. June, Oscar and other members of Whispering Falls have to find the killer or let the group go within 24 hours. Will they be able to solve the mystery? Oh and the surprise at the end….well, you’ll have to read for yourself! Enjoy
This was a very fun cozy mystery. I loved the magic and the potions that all the characters are able to make. I am looking forward to many more books in this series. These make me laugh and help me to relax. I received a copy of this book from the author for a fair and honest opinion that I gave of my own free will.
Things are going to the birds, literally, for holistic spiritualist June Heal and her beloved town Whispering Falls. An Audubon Society Chapter comes to town when they think a rare, almost extinct Spangled Smoky Momoko has been sighted. The bird is, in fact, in town and hiding in Petunia’s hair, and she and June do all they can to keep it hidden from the Society and exotic zoo owner Adam Vedder. When Vedder is murdered, associations with the Society members and motives arise. June does all she can to help her husband Oscar, the town’s officer, get to the bottom of it all.
Author Tonya Kappes is quite the prolific writer, and I have read, and enjoyed, most of her other series but have been behind on the Magical Cures Mysteries. The more I read of these books, the more it becomes my favorite of her series. There are a lot of magic and paranormal elements, but Kappes manages to balance it with the real world to make it believable. The characters are quirky enough to be endearing, the small town setting charming, and the pace brisk.
A CHARMING MISFORTUNE is a fun, light, entertaining read. Perfect for an escape from the real world for a few hours.
I received and ARC of this title and voluntarily shared my thoughts here.
This is such a good book, i love mystery with paranormal elements and this series is fantastic for that; even better if you are missing some books in the series you still can enjoy the new one fully ( you will just want to read what you missed as soon as possible).
June is trying to prevent a disaster while helping hide/safe a very rare bird when a group of tourists come to try to capture it….investigation are not as easy when it’s not mystics related since time is counting and Oscar can’t keep the tourist in Whispering Falls for a long time.
I loved to see June and Oscar working together and learning more about some of the gifts those from Whisperings fall have.Mr Prince Charming is as always a wonderful protector.
Full of sweet moments, wonderful characters, a great investigation and a touch of magic this cozy mystery is a must read.
