But, the beauty was nobody would ever think to look for him there. And he needed a place where nobody could find him.Annabelle had just about had enough of her ill-tempered father. He loved her, but he was needy and that hampered her ability … needy and that hampered her ability to have a life of her own. She expected she’d never marry until he was gone. The thought was sad, but she was sure it was reality.
When Jack and Annabelle meet, they seem like the most unlikely couple ever. Their differences were stark.
Can these two find a way to have a future when their lives have taken them in such opposite paths.

I really enjoyed this book!! Keeps me wanting more, and I didn’t want to put it down!!
I read this in one day! This story is proof that love, God, and the kindness of a stranger can really change a person. Jack had a problem with gambling and stealing. Annabelle was a prisoner in her home, because of a drunken father. But Jack starts to sense a change in himself and feels the overwhelming need to protect Annabelle. This story was full of enough action to keep you on your toes and was a sweet love story as well. Great read!
I am really liking the Boarding House Misfits Series by Annie Boone. This one is the story of Jack Hicks, a gambler and a cheater at cards, Annabelle Baker, the daughter of an abusive father. I love the way Annie develops each of her characters and fits them into the plot of the story. The consistent character is Dolores, the owner of the Rosebud Boarding House. It is an enjoyable, short, sweet and clean romance that I thoroughly enjoyed.
Jack Hicks spends his days cheating at cards and running from the men he swindled. Annabelle Baker spends her days appeasing her drunken abusive father and hiding her love of reading from him. When her father offers her up as payment for his debts to his fellow band of outlaws, she realizes that he never loved her. Jack sees her in town and is immediately attracted her. He ends up chasing after the men who have her and deciding that there are better ways to spend his life than as a thief. Nice instant love historical western romance with boarding house owner Dolores O’Hanlon helping Jack stay out of trouble.
Quick, easy, inspiring read. The second sweet story in the Boarding House Misfits Series that expounds the power of love to transform lives. Endearing characters and plot with a little twist make this a great read. Still love Delores and her advice. I recommend this book especially for fans of Historical Christian Fiction set in the “Old West”.

Jack Hicks spread his cards across the table and reached for the winnings he had just gained with his Royal Flush. However, one man stabbed a knife in the center of the table; another stood and put his hands on his guns. With Jack’s reputation, they didn’t know how, but they did know he cheated. The others also grabbed their guns, so Jack flipped the table and moved out of the way. Chaos erupted! Jack slipped to the floor and filled his money pouch with as much as he could gather, then quietly walked out while the fighting raged on. Stealing a horse, he outran his pursuers and got away.
Having been grazed by a bullet, he decided to stop in Briarwood to rest and heal. Jack walked into the General Store and read an ad about the Rosebud Boarding House. That was just what he needed to stay out of sight while he recovered. He walked over and paid a month’s rent for his room.
Annabelle Baker heard her father calling for her and jumped down from the tree where she had been reading. He was already on his way to drunk and it was still morning. He was sending her to town for more whiskey, and she knew he’d get meaner as he drank. She stopped at the General Store and asked Mr. Cloone for a pint of whiskey. He seemed to know what was going on in her life and had sympathy. He was the closest she had to a friend – and was the only one she had.
Jack watched the saloon across the street and wanted so much to play cards. He knew Miss Dolores would not be happy with that, but he couldn’t stop himself. She greeted him and asked where he was going, so he told her for a walk, then had to go elsewhere so she wouldn’t catch him in a lie. He headed to the General Store and saw the most beautiful girl! He watched her as she tried to remain inconspicuous as she walked slowly down the street.
Annabelle had her precious book ripped from her hands by her angry father. As she cried and begged him not to, he tore out page by page, threw them on the ground and mashed them with his muddy boot. Then he told her to go to town and buy him more whiskey! Jack was exiting from the card game as she walked past and he almost knocked her over. She brushed past him, but Jack felt a connection with her. When he returned to the boarding house, he asked Dolores if she knew such a woman and was told that it was Annabelle he described. She also asked him where he had been going, and he guiltily confessed to his gambling. Surprisingly, she insisted he stop and obey her rules – and he agreed to do so. She assured him he could do this, especially with the new interest he seemed to be developing in a certain lady. Was his life about to change? He respected Dolores and was willing to honor her wishes. And there was something special about the young lady – would he pursue that possibility? Or would his past catch up to him and force him to flee again?
This was such a well-written book! I loved the story line and it was a joy to see the positive effect the two women were already having on Jack. There just might be hope for him for a new beginning. Grab a copy and see what life has in store for him.
Super cute story! I was, at times, holding my breath during the exciting moments. He’s a known gambler with no attachments to anyone. She’s a single young woman living with a drunk father. Can he find someone to change his mind and settle him down, or is he destined to forever be a wandering gambler? Can she find someone to rescue her from her controlling, drunken father, or will she forever be controlled by a father who despises her?
