It’s 1929, and Ticky Maltravers is the toast of London high society, adored by everyone—or so it seems, until somebody poisons him over dinner. Now it turns out that numerous people with secrets to hide had every reason to wish him dead. But which of them murdered him? For Freddy Pilkington-Soames, newspaper reporter and man-about-town, the question hits a little too close to home, thanks to an … an unfortunate drunken encounter with Ticky’s corpse which he’d much rather the police didn’t find out about—and thanks also to his exasperating mother Cynthia’s seeming determination to get herself arrested by tampering with the evidence. But a pretty girl with big blue eyes is demanding his help in solving the mystery, so what can he do but agree? Now all he has to do is hide the wrong clues, find the right ones, and unmask the murderer before the police discover what’s really been going on. That ought to be easy enough. If only people didn’t keep getting killed…

The characters are very entertaining
This was a light and fun read. I enjoyed it!
terrible
Great idea for a series.
Set in an era which I am not drawn to, it still proved to be engaging.
I did not like the author’s style. Disappointing. I stopped after the first chapter.
This is a fun, entertaining read. It’s not earth shattering, but you will enjoy the quirky characters
This was a fun, quick read.
It was just fun. Not a bit demanding, it was enjoyable entertainment, quite different from what I usually read. (Generally, I choose to read books that teach me something I didn’t know before or make me think about something significant in the world.) That said, I would choose the next in the series if it became available.
Well written English light novel with debts to Jeeves, Miss Marple, and Just William.
Love the period stories when there was little technology!
Good mystery
Classic British upper-class mystery without the country house setting.
It was hard to get into at first but the ending is where all the action really is and ends up being better than the start.
Boring. I tried reading it about 5 times and couldn’t get through more than a chapter each time. Maybe I should have just read the last chapter? I really wanted to like this book too. Oh well.
Freddy Pilkington-Soames is a young man about town in London. His mother gets him involved in covering up a murder that neither of them committed and a bit of mayhem and hilarity ensues. This was a quirky fun read.
This story was fun. It was enjoyable to see what the characters were thinking as the story developed.
Interesting characters and a story that was entertaining as well.
This was okay for this kind of book. There were so many characters right off the bat, I had some trouble keeping track at first of who was who. They soon all came together. I wasn’t too fond of the main character’s mother – she was so quick to throw her son under the bus to save herself. But on the whole, it was a fast “who dunnit” read. Enjoyed it and was glad it wasn’t long and tedious.
This is kind of a quirky book but the characters are interesting and it is a page turner as you can’t believe what will happen next. Worth the read.
