Having read and enjoyed the first book in the Ansley McGregor Mysteries, A Case for the Winemaker, I was eager to give A Case for the Yarn Maker a read, and Candace Havens has continued with the excellent character development and with the wonderful descriptions of the small, picturesque town of Sweet River, Texas.
We get to know Mrs. Whedon more, although it’s still a mystery as to why she wears dark green all the time! Ainsley is getting closer to starting a romantic relationship with a man that can handle the heat. And George is even more adorable in book two, which I didn’t think was possible.
As for the mystery, it could be a bit difficult to solve because there are a lot of nasty people who make for great suspects. But if you read really carefully and have watched a certain movie that stars Daniel Craig, you may be able to figure out whodunnit pretty quick.
All in all, another great addition to the cozy mystery genre, and I am excited for A Case for the Toymaker, which comes out on October 26, 2020
We are back in Sweet River where Ainsley and her Great Dane George Clooney discovers another murder in this sleepy little town, this time it is the guest host Yarn Goddess who Ainsely organised to visit and do a book signing and knitting workshop at her store Bless Your Art.
Some would say that Ainsley has some pretty bad luck, she moved here from Chicago to get away from crime then she gets involved with investigating the second murder the town has had in almost 30/40 years!!
The Yarn Goddess it seemed was up to shady things with her brand of yearn causing skin rashes and there seemed to be a few fellow fans who could have been our potential suspected killer, yet with the right amount of twists and turns you were left guessing as Ainsley gets her sleuth on and tries to work out the culprit before she comes close to meeting an untimely death again.
I am loving this series, the characters and of course her lovable Great Dane George who has a knack of finding dead bodies! I can wait to see what case is going to involved in next!
I knew it! (doing the happy jig)
Nothing more relaxing than a cozy who-dun-it on a Sunday afternoon.
This is book two in the series. It’s a standalone but might I suggest reading book one- it gives you a bit of backstory on our leading lady and her brother and introductions to the supporting cast.
Anywho back to the mystery at hand
The author did a spot-on job of running the reader in multiple directions. Just when I had all my Danes in a row one would suddenly take off to chat with a squirrel and I would be back to chasing my tail.
The story flows smoothly with little hitches of excitement that provided light suspense and mystery while still allowing a smaller back story to exist – like the chemistry between Mr. McHottie Fire Chief and Ainsley.
Ainsley, our heroine, is a soft blend of femininity and intelligence. Before you go getting your knickers in a twist – She is smart, driven a touch scattered at times. She is quite capable of standing on her own two feet but she also longs for the warmth and protection of a partner – possibly above mentioned fire chief?
I enjoyed the balance of her character. Too many times its all polish and strength. She had a sweet vulnerability that made her more the girl next door IMO.
Ohhhh and Jake – melt my heart.
Another big positive that I felt only enhanced the experience was the small-town feel – the close friends, the feeling of community and family.
I’m a sucker for a good cozy mystery, especially when it involves dogs and A Case for The Yarnmaker did not disappoint!
It reminded me a lot of the Hallmark Mystery movies that just embrace you like a warm blanket and you can’t help smiling while watching (or in this case reading).
The perfect distraction for these crazy times!
A Case for the Yarn Maker is the second book in the Ainsley McGregor series by Candace Havens. Ainsley finds herself opening up Bless Your Art to a very famous knitting and yarn expert, Yarn Goddess. Hoping to bring more customers to the shop and widen her exposure, Ainsley wonders if bringing in Yarn Goddess was a good idea. A diva to the highest degree, everything has to be perfect and exactly so for Yarn Goddess. When she comes up against Mrs. Whedon after her book signing, but just before the demonstrations at the Community Center, Ainsley braces for an explosion of epic proportions. What she doesn’t expect is for George Clooney to find Yarn Goddess dead inside Bless Your Art after she’s a no-show at the Community Center.
Mrs. Whedon is implicated in the death of Yarn Goddess. Having been involved in a public confrontation with the deceased swayed the police in that direction. Ainsley knows Mrs. Whedon is innocent and something more sinister is afoot. In order to protect and exonerate Mrs. Whedon, Ainsley starts asking around and delving into the Yarn Goddess’s family and empire. It would seem those closest to Yarn Goddess have the highest amounts of motive and opportunity. Now, Ainsley just has to convince her brother and stay a couple steps ahead of the murderer.
The mystery was set up and executed well. I enjoyed trying to figure out who did it an why. I will admit that I had a good idea who the murderer was in A Case for the Yarn Maker. Thinking I knew who did it, and ultimately being correct, did not detract from this mystery in any way. In fact, it amplified the suspense and nail-biting action of certain scenes, decisions, and the ultimate showdown.
Ainsley is a wonderful character with business know-how and impeccable customer service skills. Her brother, Greg, is the local sheriff, and he tries to keep her from interfering with the case but with his sights only set on Ainsley’s friend, she knows she can’t sit on the sidelines. Jake is a firefighter, friend of Greg’s, and Ainsley’s closest neighbor. Together, the three of them along with Ainsley’s friends, make up a great cast of characters.
This books was an enjoyable, fast read that keep me engaged. I loved the setting: an artisan market, the characters were wonderful, realistic, and relatable. The world building allowed me to visualize the scenes and I felt like I was there with the characters as they lead their normal, everyday lives. I love the little hints of romance threaded through the book. There were a few hints in book 1 but the volume increased in book 2. I like the direction the author is taking Ainsley, as a business owner, small-town citizen, and in her love life. I couldn’t put the book down.
Finally a book that has a decent mystery, knitting and an unfulfilled romance. This is a book I was anxious to read as soon as I saw yarn maker in the title.
As a knitter and a spiner, I am always looking for books about my hobbies. And having fallen in love with George Clooney and Ainsley in the first book, I was happy to be able to read this book.
George Clooney is a rather interesting Great Dane. One of his special talents seems to be finding dead bodies. And this time, the body he finds is that of the Yarn Maker. And that is really the start of the story.
The Yarn Maker seems to be based slightly on the great knitting goddess Elizabeth Zimmerman and the great Yarn Harlot. But the Yarn Maker is not in their league. Why? Because they are/were real people and the Yarn Maker is not.
The storyline is great with familiar characters from the first book coming back. The main theme is that a special event is scheduled for Ainsley’s store. The woman, the Yarn Maker, yes, that is her name, seems to be high maintenance but is there a reason for this? Something must be up when the Yarn Maker is found unexpectedly dead in Ainsley’s store. And this leads us down the merry path to figuring out who was behind the sudden death of this mysterious woman.
My only dislike on this book is that it is book 2 and there is no indication if there will be another one in this series. I would love to know Jake and Ainsley actually manage to hook up and explore the obvious chemistry between the two of them. And I would love be able to enjoy more of George’s antics.
I did receive a copy of this novel in advance from the publisher in exchange for a fair and unbiased review.
Ainsley and her crew at “Bless your Art” are setting up for a signing and visit from the Yarn Goddess. She has a certain way of doing things and is impossible to be around but she is so good with her fans and they just love her.
Ainsley had been feeling sick and still has a cold so the Yarn Goddess did not want Ainsley anywhere near her, because she did talk to her for just a minute and Ainsley didn’t really like the woman much.
After the signing The Yarn Goddess was going back to her room at the hotel to rest for several hours before she headed to the Community Center where she would meet with some more of her fans. When she didn’t show up they went back to her hotel to see where she was.
Ainsley had to go to the shop and put some stuff away. She and her dog, George Clooney, heard something and went to investigate, what she found or what George found was another dead body. He seemed to have a knack for that.
Ainsley and her book group can’t resist trying to solve a mystery. Even though her brother Greg is the Sheriff and does not want her or the group involved. A really good book that I think you will enjoy.
I received this arc from Tule Publishing in exchange for an honest review. This is the second book in the series and I’ve read both. I love a good mystery and this one keeps you guessing. So far this book is my favorite between the two. In book two, Ainsley McGregor has set up a visit by the famous Yarn Goddess to her shop To sign her bestselling book.. YG arrives with her assistant Hilary for the event. Hilary is busy jumping at her every command to make sure all is perfect for her. YG takes a dislike to Ainsley since she hates dogs and Ainsley has her dog George and also because Ainsley has a cold. The plan is for YG to go over to the community center for a yarn demonstration after the book signing and a nap at her B&B. On her way out she is confronted by one of the town residents, Mrs. Whedon, who accuses her of causing rashes and other problems with her yarn.
YG never shows up at the community center and no one can locate her. Mrs. Whedon steps in for her with a demonstration to appease all the people waiting to see YG. Later, Ainsley returns to the shop to take care of cash receipts and closing up and George finds a very dead YG. The next day a new and inexperienced deputy arrests Mrs. Whedon from church, causing quite a stir. Ainsley’s brother Greg is the sheriff and he releases her and reclassifies her as a person of interest.
So many fans of YG arrive in Sweet River to pay their respects to YG and create a memorial to her. While there, they shop and buy out the people’s booths in the store. Ainsley’s booth owners have set up a book for the visitors to sign and pay their respects. At the end of the day, Ainsley is closing up and notices someone has written a threat in the memorial book – You’re next. She texts a picture to her brother who rushes over. It is determined that the book has cyanide poison on it. Greg calls in the EMTs and Forensics to check out the scene and Ainsley herself. A vial of the cyanide is located by Ainsley’s car so the thought is she’s Now being targeted.
As in the first book, Ainsley, the townspeople and a couple of her students start discussing the clues. YG had a son and daughter and her best friend who worked with her. Each starts to look guilty. Greg has his best friend Jake stay with Ainsley to protect her.
This was a lot of fun to try and guess who was the killer. The book was well written and enjoyable to read. It was good to see the same core of characters again. I enjoyed seeing Jake and Ansley start talking about how they like each other. I give it 5 stars.
This is the second book in this series and once again Ainsley McGregorand her dog George Clooney will be up to their necks in a mysterious death in Sweet River, Texas. The Yarn Goddess is coming to toen and giving a lecture about her yarn at the local fair but not everyone is happy about her been there Town local Mrs. Whedon accuses her that her yarn causes rashes So when the Yarn Goddess is found dead she is the prime suspect But there is more to this case than anyone suspects ans soon Ainsley is a target herself Who is the murderer and was it even someone in town.
Ainsley is back on a case with her trusty protector, George Clooney. George Clooney, her Great Dane that is. Don’t you just love that name for him. It fits him too because as usual he is a smart, loyal protector for Ainsley. That is just what she needs in A Case for the Yarn Maker (Ainsley McGregor #2) by Candace Havens.
This is a series that is growing on me. The first book introduced Ainsley and her setting up the art Emporium in Sweet River, Texas. I thought then there will be many different artisan characters in these stories. I was not wrong. The first book involved wine, this one yarn and a Yarn Goddess along with a local octogenarian. Yes, you heard right.
Murder and humor go well together in the hands of writer Candace Havens. Recommend for anyone who needs to relax and take their minds off of the today’s problems.
An ARC of the book was given to me by Tule Publishing which I voluntarily chose to read and reviewed. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
This was a really good Cozy Mystery that reminded me of a Hallmark movie. As I started reading this book i could see this book in my minds eye as a movie. That to me makes a wonderful read as a book. And I for one want to thank the author for keeping me well entertained while reading it. “Bless Your Art” is the kind of arts and crafts store that I would have opened if I had been able too. Ainsley is the owner of the shop and has others who rent space and help out inside the shop as well. She is also a part time professor as well as now a detective one might say. It seems that murder likes to find her. This is the second book in the Anisley McGregor series and each can be read as a stand alone. In this one we have the murder of the Yarn Goddess for her to solve and we get to see her in act with Jake a different kind of mystery all in itself. I loved that this was a bit more than a “normal” cozy mystery in we also get a touch of romance and that to me will keep me coming back for more from author Candace Havens.
I loved reading A Case for the Yarn Maker by Candace Havens book two in her Ainsley McGregor mystery series. Ainsley McGregor, a former, and now part-time, English professor, followed her dream and opened an artisan market in Sweet River, Texas. The market, “Bless Your Art”, would be a central location for local artists to sell their merchandise and teach classes, as well as hopefully bring tourists to the town. This space was filled to the rafters with colorful art, yarn, jewelry, pet treats, jellies, antiques and even a few medieval weapons; encouraging the merchants to become a quasi family of sorts. Inviting internationally known Yarn Goddess to sign her latest book and offer a workshop was a coup for Ainsley; as the town filled with visitors and fans. When the Yarn Goddess goes missing at the workshop venue, one of the merchants substitutes and satisfies the fans. After returning to her store, Ainsley’s Great Dane once again, finds a dead body; that of Yarn Goddess. When her merchant friend is accused of the murder, Ainsley knows she has to figure out the whys, hows, and who the real killer is. Her protective brother, the sheriff, didn’t want her help nor would his warning her to stop investigating. Then there’s the “Murder Board” that many of the vendors and town folk worked on, helping to figure out who the killer could be. If she didn’t find the killer soon she just might be the next victim; even if Jake her neighbor, brother’s best friend, and her crush was “baby sitting” her 24/7.
I genuinely enjoyed reading this funny, sweet and intriguing book and had trouble putting this book down. Ms Havens kept me on my toes guessing who the killer was, until I turned the last page. Her writing had me feeling as if I was there, watching the events unfold. I loved seeing Ainsley’s friendship with Jake progressing. I highly recommend A Case for the Yarn Maker to other readers and look forward to the next book in this series.
I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book.

This is Ainsley McGregor’s story.
There was no parking left on the street and there was a double line of people down the block to my friend Shannon’s coffee shop. All of those people waited to get into my store,
This might work. There’d been so much planning and the special guest of honor, Yarn Goddess, who would arrive in exactly an hour and a half, liked everything a specific way for her book signings and the classes she’d teach afterward.
“Morning, Ainsley,” said Mike, my favorite winemaker and fiancé of my bestie, Shannon. I’d helped him a few months ago when he was accused of murder, and ever since he’d been my right-hand man, making sure the store was clean and always organized. He had a winery to run, and I kept telling him he didn’t need to help out so much here, but he and Shannon had insisted.
Today, I was more than grateful. Sleeping in had helped with the cold, even though the jackhammer continued to pound in my head. “Hey, thank you for everything. I can’t believe how organized this place looks.”
A Case for the Yarn Maker by Candace Havens is a 4 star book.

I love a good cozy mystery that keeps you engage to very end, with a host of characters. This series has everything a reader wants 1. whodunit that keeps you engage to the very end .2. Characters that feel like family and want them around.3 A major hub like the Bless your Art studio where everyone can come together to share their craft.
There was a murder at Bless Your Art, Ainsley McGregor’s store in Sweet River, Texas. The victim is Yarn Goddess, a popular crochet and knitting expert, who was there for a book signing and class. This sends Ainsley and her group of friends on a quest to find the murderer, even though Ainsley’s brother told her to keep her nose out of it.
This mystery kept me guessing to the very end. There were so many strong suspects that I couldn’t figure out which one was the killer until it was revealed. I really enjoyed the first book in this series and couldn’t wait to get my hands on this one when I saw it was coming out. I like the authors writing style and the way each of her characters feels like an old friend by the time you finish reading the book. I especially like George Clooney, Ainsley’s dog, who always seems to be at the right place at the right time. He’s a true hero. Even though this book can be read as a stand-alone, I would recommend reading A Case for the Winemaker first to get to know the characters better.
