This was very immersive. What a fantastic start to a series. Good storyline with well-developed characters that you can relate to. A definite page-turner and would be interested in continuing the series.
Nail biting suspense or should I say a neck biter. Great beginning to a series. I love the setting of a ivy league high school. The characters are well developed, the dialogue flows easily. The descriptions in the book take you right there. It gets into a host of things we all worried about while still in school. Will I have any friends, can I get good grades, how do I keep up, and let’s not forget about the mean girls and cliques. So real. Now add to that magic, love interests, and life. A real page turner. I can’t wait for the next book, and if your not used to magic, there is a glossary in the back to help out with all the magic terms as well as a character list.
Love this series! The author did a wonderful job on the characters and story. Looking forward to the next book in the series and highly recommend!! (I received this book as an arc and am leaving a voluntary honest review)
Not your average teen high school type read. Yes, there’s normal drama but a great story and start for the next book. I totally recommend reading this book. It’s a great start to a series of adventure waiting to unfold!!
I really enjoyed this book. Starting on the next one can’t wait to see what is going to happen next. Val reminds me of some of the girls I knew in school. If you want a good book to read and your into vampires this is the one to read. It is a series. Wonderful job Betsy Flak keep up the good work.
World building story. A little combat action. A lot of teen angst. Some wonderful characters; particularly Lila, Marina, and Gabe. Dastard villains; some human, some vampires.
I received a copy of this book as a gift. This is my honest review.
Good start but disappointing ending…
It’s Lila’s first day of high school at Eversfield Preparatory Academy thanks to the efforts of her friend Val and a last-minute scholarship based on Lila’s outstanding test results. It’s a chance for the education and future Lila has hoped for but it comes with an obligation to Val in return for her help. Val expects Lila to become part of her group of friends that rule the Elizabeth Blackwell dormitory; girls Lila has nothing in common with. Marina, Lila’s roommate, has no intention of becoming friends with anyone in Val’s group, including Lila.
Not all students at Eversfield are “normal”. Marina and her brother Gabe are members of a group of young vampire hunters who attend Eversfield; one of the high schools that prepare young hunters for their future as Warriors and Diviners in addition to completing their high school students alongside “normal” students. They will be the only defense for the school if vampires attack – and they will attack!
The author does a good job of laying the groundwork for the series and there are some good possibilities for where the story may go in the future but I don’t like stories that end in cliff hangers and this one just stops.
The main character is a normal girl named Lila who escapes a difficult home life and moves to a ritzy boarding school. What Lila and her best friend Val don’t know is that this school is also home to a training cell of vampire hunters. And Lila’s new roommate (and her cute older brother) are part of that cell.Of course, lurking in the shadows outside the school’s leafy campus is a group of vampires with a plan. Their leaders, Duncan and Kane (who we met in the prequel), have some theories to take down the vampire-hunters once and for all. Of course, that’s provided they don’t get killed in the process – by a vampire hunter or each other!
Honestly, the set up was a mess. The characters were so one-dimensional that by the time the plot started coming together in the end I had lost interest. The author had interesting plot ideas, but the characterization s and structure took away the impact of the reveal.
Val seemed to have a obsession with Lila. If this concept was expand on more during the school drama plot, I may have found it more entertaining. What is Lila and Val’s history? Why is Val so eager for Lila to be part of her clique?
Marina came off as pathetic and unreasonable. Almost every time she had a scene in the story, her distrust of Lila was mentioned. This was done so much that I stopped caring that she was bullied by Tasha, her old roommate. If anything it felt like she was becoming the bully in a subtle way with her internal judgements against Lila. It was hard too take her seriously.
I really enjoyed the dynamic with Kane and Grace. It brought out more complexity in Kane’s character, which made me want to know more. Do vampires lose their souls when turned? Is Kane seeing Grace because she is mentally unstable due to the turn or because of her Diviner abilities?
Overall, this Vampire Academy and Marked mash-up did not live up to the hype. The plot devices are unique, but the execution causes it to fall flat.
I was surprised how much I enjoyed this book. The author had done an awesome job with the depth and world building of the characters and the story. All the high-school drama was believable and I just loved the splash of supernatural that snuck its way in. While it’s geared towards young-adults I felt like adults may like the story. It’s definitely attention grabbing and filled with plenty of thrills. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes paranormal fantasy.

Final Rating: 5 Stars
Solid 3.5 star
I did find this book hard to get into to begin with, however after the first few chapters it started to come together well and was pretty good for the first book of a new series. The characters started to develop well through out the book and I really liked Lila and Gabe and you could feel how they were trying to not only deal with school, but everything going on around them. There were plenty of emotions flying round to go with twists and turns that once you got into the story it held you captive.
I read through this pretty fast. This series of Ms. Flax is well written and sets up the books world well and her story telling is engaging and kept my attention till the end. I wasn’t read for it to end. Drama, suspense, magic, supernaturals and humans. An Evil plot that has some trouble getting started and she leaves at the end with a gasp.
Arc Arc Arc.
I have received this ARC in exchange for an honest review from the author Betsy Flak.
Okay I love and hated this.
Things I loved…
I loved most of the characters.
I loved the worldbuilding.
I loved the elemental part to it. Reminded me A lot of The Vampire Academy series.
I loved the points of view of Gabe and Lila and Marina.
I loved the whole boarding school niche too.
Now what I hated….
I Hated Val.
That’s it.
She is the worst.
Just the WORST!!!
Now I need book two.
Gimme!!!
I write weird reveiw.
What can I say, This book will never become a masterpiece of immortal literature. On the other hand, if you want to just lay back and enjoy a READ, this one truly works. In spite of numerous little areas I could NITPICK about, I simply got pulled into the story. I like to live vicariously in my reading, but this was ridiculous. I was so involved with the story that I so wanted to just “BITCHSLAP THAT HO “. l felt guilty and wondered what my granddaughters would think.
Betsy Flak really rocked it ! ! ! !
I loved reading this book it was amazingly writen. all the characters and plot line was so interesting it kept my intrest peaked from start to finish. I will contiue reading Betsy Flak she is wonderful author and highly recommend her.
i was given this book as ARC for an honest review.
ONE AWESOME STORY!!!
I have to say this is one of the best stories I’ve read. Scenes, characters, location details to the evil beings of the known universe were so realistic I could almost see it. So many twists and turns that kept me captivated from the start. Surprises around every corner kept me frozen to my seat. Emotions, personalities, attitudes, was spot on for realism. I felt like I was dropped right in the middle of the excitement and wanted to make a stand with the main characters. Yeah, that got me no where. All the yelling at the characters didn’t help either. I wasn’t sure what to expect from my agreeing to read this, but I’m glad I did. I feel like I’m the one having the adventure. Betsy definitely nailed this world’s creation down. She did an awesome job bringing this read to life. Excellent job Betsy.
This book was a slow start for me, it took several chapters to get into, and I had to put it down a couple of times before I really got into it. In the end though, I loved it completely and cannot wait for the next in the series! I am looking forward to seeing how Lila handles the web of crazy she has gotten herself into. I am also looking forward to seeing Gabe, Marina, and their group discover secrets and mete out justice!
I feel like there should really be some back story on Lila at the beginning. I get the feeling her mom is threatening her dad behind his back but it didn’t really make sense.
I was gifted an ARC in return of an honest review.
**Author updated the ending which made me want the next book even more!! WooHoo can not wait!
