#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • The sixth book in Diana Gabaldon’s acclaimed Outlander saga, the basis for the Starz original series. Don’t miss the new Outlander novel, Go Tell the Bees That I Am Gone, available November 23!“The large scope of the novel allows Gabaldon to do what she does best, paint in exquisite detail the lives of her characters.”—Booklist The year is 1772, and on the eve of … characters.”—Booklist
The year is 1772, and on the eve of the American Revolution, the long fuse of rebellion has already been lit. Men lie dead in the streets of Boston, and in the backwoods of North Carolina, isolated cabins burn in the forest.
With chaos brewing, the governor calls upon Jamie Fraser to unite the backcountry and safeguard the colony for King and Crown. But from his wife Jamie knows that three years hence the shot heard round the world will be fired, and the result will be independence—with those loyal to the King either dead or in exile. And there is also the matter of a tiny clipping from The Wilmington Gazette, dated 1776, which reports Jamie’s death, along with his kin. For once, he hopes, his time-traveling family may be wrong about the future.

The Diane Gabaldon series was recommended to me by a former colleague & I have recommended it to many others. It has aspects of many different genres: time travel, history & “romance” but much more in depth than the typical romance. Great, well-drawn characters. Gabaldon immerses the reader in a complete, complex world that you don’t want to leave.
This one starts out extremely slow for a long time, but then it really picks up and takes off! Lots of action and a few twists, some heartbreak and happy times too!
I loved it so much!
I read the print version of each book in the series, then I listen to the audio— this is my top time travel series! I love all the historical detail included— though I admit to skipping the bedroom scenes. I recommend this book to others who enjoy time travel or historical books.
I have (finalllllly) finished this book, marking this the 6,047th page of this series that I have read. The first 850 pages, in the debut novel Outlander, had me absolutely captivated. None of the books since have really mesmerized me quite like that first. This book, A Breath of Snow and Ashes, though, could be retitled A Breath of Fresh Air. I’m not sure what was different, but somehow this installment felt meaningful and not just fluffy exploitation of her characters, as I accused the author of doing in my review of the 4th book.
Now, as usual, I begin a 3-month hiatus from the series to mentally decompress. 🙂
Not a standalone and the tv shows will not be enough
Adored the book, excellent series
It is my private opinion that Diana Gabaldon does not know how to write mediocre or sub-standard work. This is the Sixth book in the Outlander series and it packed a punch. It offers authentic historical backdrop, adventure, intrigue, gut-wrenching tragedy, laugh out loud with and situations, unforgettable characters, and heartwarming romance. I sound like a cliched ad, but I just cannot help the superlatives.
The saga continues with Jamie and Claire with their family and friends living on Fraser’s Ridge in the dawn of the American Revolution. Events unfold that force Jamie into officially taking a stance for freedom that is fraught with danger. He must some how steer his family through the powder keg of entanglements that threaten in their corner of N.C. There is a mysterious ‘ghost’ who haunts Jamie’s Aunt Jocasta’s River Run Plantation and one of her slaves disappears along with the Jacobite gold. Ian finally shares his darkest secrets and in the end the unspeakable happens to him. Roger finds his calling and purpose, but only to have fate take a hand again. Claire and Brianna at separate times go through horrifying and harrowing experiences that only the love and courage of their husbands can get them safely through. Lord John and his son make brief, but memorable appearances too. Stephen Bonnet, one of their worst nemesis, along with other terrible villains attack the family’s safety. Corruption and betrayal might destroy everything Jamie and Claire have worked for to build up the Ridge community. And what about that naggy newspaper clipping? Oh yes, we finally get to discover how that goes for them.
I do not think ‘epic’ is too much of a description for the series and this book in particular as so much is set in motion with some resolved and some deliciously falling in the ‘To Be Continued’. So good!
Another Diana Gabaldon terrific novel in her series. Be sure and watch “Outlander” the adaptation of her series.
She breathes drama and intrigue. I love her characters and the way she blends them with real history. Please send us more of the same, Diana.
