From a review by the HALL OF FAME TOP 100 REVIEWER, Grady HarpThe real pleasure of jumping into this mystery is the manner in which Richard Houston writes. Think Garrison Keillor’s `A Prairie Home Companion’, a dab of Mark Twain, and a dollop of John Grisham – marinate out in nature, and out comes Houston’s style. Not bad ingredients for an author on the rise. Jake Martin is not your ordinary … Martin is not your ordinary sleuth. He’s an ordinary guy with an extraordinary dog. This time the story takes place in the foothills of Denver. Jake is accused of manslaughter and he has to prove the accident was really murder. Along the way he encounters a poaching ring and falls in love with a beautiful game warden. The characters are memorable and the plot is multi-layered. It keeps the reader guessing who dun-it until the very end.

Great read
Loved this book and could not wait to read the next in the series!
I liked that it was light reading, and also that I had enjoyed the main characters from another book on the series. The author kept them and the dog the same.
This series gets better each book. The characters are reflection of real life isuues without being sordid. The dog, Freddie is a main character but mainly due to the authors narrative which can be very amusing as well as insightful.
I have enjoyed each book more than the one before it in series. I love the trivia on his old Jeep each story, as …
I did not like the ending. It really amazes me how one can write a very good book and then screw up the ending. It could have been a 5 star book.
Heart warming
Loved Fred
I have read other books in the series but don’t think this one measures up. The characters never quite came together for me – confusing. Why do you need to name one character Johnson and another one Jonathan? Can’t really say I liked any of the characters. The main character strikes me as rather shiftless and lazy while his neighbor, Bonnie, …
A very enjoyable read. I have read all six books in the series. A nice bedtime book.
smart dog.
Maybe if you read the first book you wouldn’t be so confused. I hate series that require you to read each and every one to have a clue. Very confusing…I almost gave up but thought it would get better. Unfortunately it didn’t. Won’t bother with any more
Enjoyed different twists
the main character was a lazy bum using everyone that he could to supply his daily needs…. they try to create redeeming qualities for him – doesn’t fly. There is nothing wrong with him yet he refused to work and spends all his energy on spoiling his dog.
I didn’t really care for this book.
Easy summer read.
The author needs to work with the editors to tighten up his plots, but the story is interesting and there are some really humorous situations in it.
I loved t his one. Lite reading, well done.
I love mysteries that have dogs helping solve the murders. Like the character. Would have liked a different ending. I’m looking forward to another one.
I really enjoyed reading this book. In fact, I got the other books in the series!
This whole series is a joy to read.
