From a review by the HALL OF FAME TOP 100 REVIEWER, Grady HarpThe real pleasure of jumping into this mystery is the manner in which Richard Houston writes. Think Garrison Keillor’s `A Prairie Home Companion’, a dab of Mark Twain, and a dollop of John Grisham – marinate out in nature, and out comes Houston’s style. Not bad ingredients for an author on the rise. Jake Martin is not your ordinary … Martin is not your ordinary sleuth. He’s an ordinary guy with an extraordinary dog. This time the story takes place in the foothills of Denver. Jake is accused of manslaughter and he has to prove the accident was really murder. Along the way he encounters a poaching ring and falls in love with a beautiful game warden. The characters are memorable and the plot is multi-layered. It keeps the reader guessing who dun-it until the very end.

I like anything with dogs in it.
Did not hook me soon enough
The book was entertaining. I had a !little trouble keeping the characters straight. They all seemed to run together.
I enjoyed the book & was shocked that the heroine died.
The whole series is light enjoyable read g. Can’t help but love the characters.
This the second book in this series that I have read. I really like the characters and Love a book that involves dogs( as long as nothing really bad happens to them!!!!)
The romance was not well developed and the plot choppy He mentions his daughter in passing but never has her part of his life It was a challenge to keep the characters straight
The author did a great job of keeping you guessing about the suspects. However, he fell just short of neatly tying up all of the story lines he had going. Also, the romantic interest seemed contrived. Over all a very good book, the author told a good story, but fell short of great.
Lots of twists. A good read.
Broke my heart
Not good
An all around great read
I feel like I know the characters.
I loved this book, it’s a must read
Another of Houston’s Jake and Fred novels. It is a way of escaping for awhile. Easy to read and relatable characters.
Book would have been better without the sex
Not your average book. Enjoyable all the way until the final page
Loved the characters and the story, ending was a surprise!
This is my second in the series: this one seemed a bit formulaic ; characters were overdrawn : the female lead was over-dramatic with Hodgkin’s lymphoma.. the protagonist falls madly in love in a heartbeat… the dog was the best character but he’s just a little too smart to believe.
This book, and series, has the potential to be wonderful, but it falls short. The story lines are good but the delivery is slow and dull. I had high hopes be this book but they were not met.
