From a review by the HALL OF FAME TOP 100 REVIEWER, Grady HarpThe real pleasure of jumping into this mystery is the manner in which Richard Houston writes. Think Garrison Keillor’s `A Prairie Home Companion’, a dab of Mark Twain, and a dollop of John Grisham – marinate out in nature, and out comes Houston’s style. Not bad ingredients for an author on the rise. Jake Martin is not your ordinary … Martin is not your ordinary sleuth. He’s an ordinary guy with an extraordinary dog. This time the story takes place in the foothills of Denver. Jake is accused of manslaughter and he has to prove the accident was really murder. Along the way he encounters a poaching ring and falls in love with a beautiful game warden. The characters are memorable and the plot is multi-layered. It keeps the reader guessing who dun-it until the very end.

A pleasant read.
I aways like that the dog ,is part of the story! All of these books that I have read, are very enjoyable.
Enjoyed reading
Surprise twisting and turning ending; easy to read, not for dog owners only
This book would have been enjoyable with about half the detail. There’s a time when words are added to make it a book. This would have been a good novelette.
Loved it!
Makes you think about your own family dynamics! Fun read.
Liked how you were. Always guessing
Since one of the main characters of the book is a golden retriever named Fred, I was instantly drawn in. The story is good and does keep you guessing throughout.
Interesting easy read. Nice way to pass a few hours reading this book, but not enough intrigue or action.
Great series, especially for dog lovers.
I love Fred! Have read 3 of his adventures. Books move along without a lot of thinking remarks.
Really good story and the action was believable. I liked the characters.
It is a good story line since I love animals, but there was MANY blank pages and multiple duplicate and triplicate pages which disturbs the reading.
This occurred in 2 of this authors books I’ve read.
I enjoy this series
A mystery and a love, story and beer drinking Golden Retriver named Fred. What’s not to like ?
Excellent easy read.
REALLY ENJOY THE BOOK
I like free helping solve the case
Overall I enjoyed this book and would have given it 5 stars but for the way the author has the characters feeding the dog Fred all kinds of people food (seasoned food, sausage, etc.) and giving him beer. May seem silly but when you are a veterinarian as I am and have seen dogs get very sick and die from this type of mentality it makes me very sad …
