From a review by the HALL OF FAME TOP 100 REVIEWER, Grady HarpThe real pleasure of jumping into this mystery is the manner in which Richard Houston writes. Think Garrison Keillor’s `A Prairie Home Companion’, a dab of Mark Twain, and a dollop of John Grisham – marinate out in nature, and out comes Houston’s style. Not bad ingredients for an author on the rise. Jake Martin is not your ordinary … Martin is not your ordinary sleuth. He’s an ordinary guy with an extraordinary dog. This time the story takes place in the foothills of Denver. Jake is accused of manslaughter and he has to prove the accident was really murder. Along the way he encounters a poaching ring and falls in love with a beautiful game warden. The characters are memorable and the plot is multi-layered. It keeps the reader guessing who dun-it until the very end.

I NEVER read cozies! but this book is entertaining & fun to read. Liked the protagonist & his various relationships with humans & dog. whole series is worth-while for light reading
I just like the characters, especially Fred.
BORING
This book is part of a series…I have read all three and was greatly entertained. The characters make the book come to life . It has many adventures and a page turner. I could not put them down always wanting to know what would happen next.
This book was believable and gun yo read.
I’m now hooked on the series!
just couldn’t get into this one
I enjoyed this mystery told from a male perspective.
A tearjerker
If you like mysteries and dogs you’ll enjoy this book. Similar to the first book but still a good read.
Couldn’t keep track of all the characters.
enjoyed reading books from this author
Interesting.
I found it a little difficult to follow the logic behind the plot at times. But still and interesting read.
The main character is too smart to respond the way he did to some of the characters and action.
I am a dog lover and this was enjoyable.
This was a relatively short book – a light, quick read. I liked all of the main characters and I loved the dog, Fred. And I loved the fact that you could read this book and it had an ending so I don’t have to read the next book to find out what happens. I can choose to read the next book if I want to!
I read the first book in the series and wa snot impressed. Still feel that way; not worth the time to read it. Not enough plot development.
It was on OK read – would not recommend it.
I love the characters especially Jake’s relationship with his dog Fred
