From a review by the HALL OF FAME TOP 100 REVIEWER, Grady HarpThe real pleasure of jumping into this mystery is the manner in which Richard Houston writes. Think Garrison Keillor’s `A Prairie Home Companion’, a dab of Mark Twain, and a dollop of John Grisham – marinate out in nature, and out comes Houston’s style. Not bad ingredients for an author on the rise. Jake Martin is not your ordinary … Martin is not your ordinary sleuth. He’s an ordinary guy with an extraordinary dog. This time the story takes place in the foothills of Denver. Jake is accused of manslaughter and he has to prove the accident was really murder. Along the way he encounters a poaching ring and falls in love with a beautiful game warden. The characters are memorable and the plot is multi-layered. It keeps the reader guessing who dun-it until the very end.

A very cute book
Easy entertaining read.
A solid mystery with interesting characters, although a lot of the protagonist’s background is never made clear. Did not have me spellbound or unable to put it down, but nonetheless worth a read.
Richard Houston never fails to entertain and I love his dog! Always a good read.
Love the whole series by Richard Houston! Always wait for the next one. Characters are fun an relatable.
I found this book delightful. The characters were original and fun – especially Jake – and believable. The reader is brought into the action smoothly, like a boat is slid into the water, and the current steadily carries him along and through the story. I also found it a perfect “take with” book. I always carry a book along when I have to wait …
This is a another fun mystery. I read all the “To Die For” books by Richard Houston and highly recommend them.
When I read “A Book to Die For”, I enjoyed it so I looked forward to future books in the series. I was really disappointed in “A Book to Die For.” It’s hard to like a book when you end up not liking the main character. Let’s put it this way–if I was looking for a love interest and hooked Jake, after reeling him in, I’d toss him back in with the …
Very good book
It was an okay story, but I get tired of hearing about how the person is broke all the time. Then surprise he has money for gas and beer.
I am a sucker for dog stories, and this one made me want to read another by the same author.
Great read!
Good who done it. I’ve read most of the books in this series. Good read.
I’m really liking the “to die for” series. Locale is in my backyard and characters are people I know. Makes it interesting.
I’ve read the series and i really enjoyed them. Looking forward to the next book.
I really enjoy this little mystery. My favorite character is Freddie.
Easy likeable characters, love the dog realism, looking forward to the next book
I like dog stories.
.
I definitely enjoyed A Book to Die For and look forward to reading more of Richard Houston. Of course, I found Fred to be the most endearing character. I liked how the author let you in on Fred’s viewpoint without being sappy. I found the other characters believable and quirky. I did find it a little distracting trying to remember who was …
It was okay.
