From a review by the HALL OF FAME TOP 100 REVIEWER, Grady HarpThe real pleasure of jumping into this mystery is the manner in which Richard Houston writes. Think Garrison Keillor’s `A Prairie Home Companion’, a dab of Mark Twain, and a dollop of John Grisham – marinate out in nature, and out comes Houston’s style. Not bad ingredients for an author on the rise. Jake Martin is not your ordinary … Martin is not your ordinary sleuth. He’s an ordinary guy with an extraordinary dog. This time the story takes place in the foothills of Denver. Jake is accused of manslaughter and he has to prove the accident was really murder. Along the way he encounters a poaching ring and falls in love with a beautiful game warden. The characters are memorable and the plot is multi-layered. It keeps the reader guessing who dun-it until the very end.

Great characters and plot.
I love books with animals that are a easy read especially when I take people for test I can pick up the story quickly.
I read this book but it’s not a favorite. I don’t like the language used. The story centers around drinking beer even by the dog. Not my thing!
I have really enjoyed this series of books. They are well written, and an enjoyable read.
The book held my interest as the characters (suspects) were introduced. There was the main mystery, a little side investigation, some romance and humor. But through it all the Golden “Fred” was the star of the show as would be expected by anyone who knows how Goldens can take over. Great book
Keep track of the characters and their relationships as you go!
A good read but a little slow in the middle.
fun read, very different
A Cozy Mystery, light reading with a love story and a mystery, that includes a smart dog who helps to solve the mystery. Enjoyable read.
There were some “goofs” of saying one thing on one page and a few pages later changing that item. It was ok – I love Fred. Fred on the cover is what drew me to the book.
Full of ridiculoua but two dimensional characters. The dog didnt really do anything. Not recommended
It was just okay. I didn’t really feel the characters came to life and we’re relatable.
Rather weak plot, dog used to attract readers, writing style was adequate, no better.
Just hard to put down! Riveting!!
I didn’t like it
Hard to read! Disjointed.
fun to read.
Did not finish it as it had inappropriate content
Enjoyed this book.
I am not done with it yet but several times I thought “I didn’t see that one coming”.
