From a review by the HALL OF FAME TOP 100 REVIEWER, Grady HarpThe real pleasure of jumping into this mystery is the manner in which Richard Houston writes. Think Garrison Keillor’s `A Prairie Home Companion’, a dab of Mark Twain, and a dollop of John Grisham – marinate out in nature, and out comes Houston’s style. Not bad ingredients for an author on the rise. Jake Martin is not your ordinary … Martin is not your ordinary sleuth. He’s an ordinary guy with an extraordinary dog. This time the story takes place in the foothills of Denver. Jake is accused of manslaughter and he has to prove the accident was really murder. Along the way he encounters a poaching ring and falls in love with a beautiful game warden. The characters are memorable and the plot is multi-layered. It keeps the reader guessing who dun-it until the very end.

I like the main character and his relationship with his dog.
The situations he finds himself in w/o even trying are interesting.
It is a great series, I would recommend this book.
This book was a pleasure to read! The characters really pop out–I felt as if I knew each and every one of them. I especially loved his neighbor–she was an adorable older woman who was a busy body and couldn’t help telling her sister everything–even when she wasn’t supposed to.
Jake was asked to edit a book–then suddenly he is accused of …
Great series. I love Fred!
I’ve read the two of Richard Houston’s books and plan on reading the rest. Very enjoyable!
Excellent series for a light, humorous read.
Too many characters. Different names for the same person. Got difficult to follow
Far fetched, but entertaining series.
This was entertaining and I love any book with a dog character in it. The main character was just ok and kept getting into difficulties, but overall, the book
kept me engaged enough to finish.
Loved the part that the dog plays in the book.
Good series. Love the interaction with the main character and his best friend
It was good. Kind of hard to keep track of the characters at first. Too many at first, but once you get into the deep of the story, it gets better. I ended up really enjoying it.
Mr. Houston writes honestly about life as an author and private investigator trying to earn a living. He describes his characters so well that I have a mental picture of them and the area they live.
If you have a Golden Retriever you will relate to Fred and this book.
I thought it was a good read. Interesting, fast moving, humorous.
This author’s books aren’t always comfortable, but they’re interesting and draw you in. I find myself loving the characters who may not even be particularly likable.
This is one of my favorite authors and the narrator, Todd McLaren kind of sounds like Tom Hanks. Jake martin is an outsourced software engineer, handyman and writer who has a golden retriever named Fred. The story takes place in Denver and the narration made me feel like I was there.
Just didn’t check off all the boxes for me. Read first 3 chapters and was bored….just not for me, I guess.
Mr. Houston never let’s me down. I live his novels and will read every one I can get my hands on.
I really enjoyed reading this book. I love the main characters in this book and the story line was very entertaining and it kept me interested from Chapter 1 to Chapter 16. I couldn’t put it down.
A murder mystery with a dog and an annoying neighbor. What’s not to like?
