When Gavin of Ashgrove and his closest friend are captured in a fierce battle during the Hundred Years’ War, their captors demand a hefty ransom from their fathers for their return. Robert is quickly set free, but Gavin’s father refuses to pay for his son’s release, leaving him to rot in a squalid French prison. Aided by a sympathetic priest, he escapes and returns home to England, only to find … find he has been proclaimed a bastard and disinherited.
With nowhere to turn Gavin journeys to Kentwood, where he fostered as a boy, hoping Lord Aldred will take him on as a knight in his guard. The old warrior is close to death, but he soon realizes Gavin is his son. Aldred plots to have Gavin inherit Kentwood and marry his much younger wife, Elizabeth, a famed and opinionated beauty who remains a virgin after a decade of marriage.
Will the king recognize Lord Aldred’s first request of a marriage between Elizabeth and Robert, uniting Robert’s estate with Kentwood—or will the temperamental Edward reward Aldred’s years of service and honor a dying man’s final request?

I loved this book from the beginning. The spoiled rich girl, Elizabeth defining her father at every turn until he marries her off to an older gentlemen, and what a gentle men. Gavin put in prison and defied by his father. Tragic! He escapes and go to the only place he really felt at home, Kentwood to his mentor. There he meets Elizabeth, married to his mentor, and begins to have feelings for her. Not giving away the rest of the story.
Storyline was ok, but nothing special.
I liked the characters of Gavin and Elizabeth. I enjoyed how their characters were developed as the story unfolded.
great and interesting
I enjoyed this book and recommend it.
I thought the plot was alit different than so many books.
I love this time period, and I had no problems with the history in this historical romance. The characters were wonderful, the story well-written, and a joy to read.
Very good story. Difficult to put down. Flows well. Highly recommend.
This is a great Regency romance novel with a good plot and wonderful H and h and secondary characters that is narrated in quite an interesting way you just want to keep reading until the end. There are some twist and turns that are quite touching and made me tearful when both H and h were ready to make sacrifices when they thought they can not be together but finally had their HEA.
This is the first book I’ve read by this author and I was completely entertained by the story and characters. I will read more of her books.
This is one of my favorite style of books. Give me a great English Medieval story and I am hooked. It had so many twist and turns that it kept me interested from page one. Gavin and Elizabeth deserved to be together but the obstacales that are thrown in their way were ones that would stop many from being together and having a happily ever after. It was a page turner. Another great summer beach reading. Enjoy!
The story line was good but too much graphic
This is a good Historical story. I loved Aldted, Elizabeth, and Gavin. It was interesting to see Elizabeth mature and develop. There is a good epilogue.
I very much enjoyed these characters, feeling very sorry for all Gavin endured, and glad that he and Elizabeth ended up in the best possible solution.
Predictable romance. Something to pass the time.
Brave female character
Although a romantic happily after type of story, there were many fun lines and creative circumstances for the main characters to find themselves in. I felt for our hero when he was rejected and abused, but cheered for him when he found a home and love.
I loved this book. Characters were believable and the plot was somewhat predictable but I liked a lot
Seals. What can one say.
