As young girls, Lady Isabella Tate, daughter of the Earl of Upperton, and her friend, Esme, told each other terrifying tales of the monster. But not just any monster. This monster was alive and living in his old mansion behind a tangle of … was alive and living in his old mansion behind a tangle of overgrown hawthorn trees in the very same county. This monster was none other than Elliot Covington, the Duke of Coldwell.
The Duke of Coldwell, scarred for life in a fire which claimed the lives of those dearest to him has been hiding in his mansion for almost eighteen years. He knows he is a figure of fear and speculation in the county and chose many years before to live a life of self-imposed isolation. But he is the loneliest Duke in all of England. I hope that some people learn, that goodness and kindness have nothing to do with looks.
Loved the book…although the main character was shallow and plagued by immaturity of reasoning. Esme was the stoic and mature character throughout the plot.
A good read. Book was saved by the epilogue.
More, please!
It would have been better if she didn’t whine so much and you gave his thoughts and feelings. Seems it was all about her and her feelings and he had none. It could have been better.
Enjoyable
Lady Isabella Tate, the daughter of the Earl of Upperton, has been given away in marriage to the Duke of Coldwell. Lady Isabella is not ready for marriage and does not feel she needs to be the sacrificial lamb for her father and younger brother. She tries to rebel against the marriage but is unsuccessful.
Elliott, the Duke of Coldwell, was scarred on his face and part of his body by fire when he was a young boy. Since that time, he had stayed in seclusion and not interacted with the ton. He eagerly agrees to marry Isabella at her father’s offer. Will Isabella be the one to look past his physical and emotional scars and love him?
Here is the deal: if you are looking for a steamy, flirtatious, adventurous, and fun-filled historical romance novel, this is not it. This is what I would call a “clean’ sweet historical romance. Isabella and Elliott do not kiss each other until the end of the novel. Then in the epilogue, Isabella has a baby. There are no secret kisses in the dark gardens during a ball or inappropriate touching while taking a ride in the park. For me, that was not what made this novel boring. Although the novel is written in the third person, the reader never gets an opportunity to see Elliot’s struggle with the development of the relationship. The reader mainly encounters Elliot when he is with Isabella or his friend Crawford. In addition, there was far more descriptive language than dialogue. The majority of the novel is about Isabella and her gaining a better understanding of her husband, herself, and her family relations. I could not connect with Isabella and felt she was overly emotional. She was very reliant upon her lady’s maid, Kitty, to help her figure out her emotional issues. Isabella also wrote long detailed letters to her best friend Esme, which took up numerous pages in the eBook. The eBook could have done with one more proofreading scan. I was intrigued by the title and the blurb for the novel, however, found the novel did not live up to my expectations. By the reviews, I know many found this novel to their liking, however, I am used to reading more flirty historical romances.
Not romantic as it should be, just lots of doubt, confusion, strife and a scarred face. This story explores the greedy, thoughtless actions of parents and the results of these actions. Wonderful friends and hope of a better life make this an interesting story. There are several unusual elements involved. Read and think on it.
Sweet Beauty and the Beast historical that is clean/safe and a little simple. Lots of feelings and moderate angst with a wounded hero and naive but loving and hopeful heroine.
I really enjoyed this book. It was romantic, and I love the conclusion, love heals all, just sweet
Winewonderwonderfulwonderful chaChasecharcharscharacters drew me in. Loved the book:

It was a nice story.
An amazing story with memorable characters who will garner your admiration.
A bit of a reprise to beauty and the beast but a real life fairy tale. The dialogue between the two main characters is beautifully and thoughtfully expressed and sets the foundation for a love story that you will not be able to put down.
This story is an inspirational must read.
Wonderful book. I didn’t want to stop reading or put it down. Terrific characters. The three main characters are Lady Isabella, Esme and The Duke of Coldwell. I really enjoyed how they were entwined around each other.
What a wonderful story, filled with redemption and the truth that love really does change situations!
Lovely story of acceptance. Good character building throughout the story. I did feel it dragged some in the latter part of the story but the ending was very good.
What a wonderful story. Read straight through, way past bedtime. Heartwarming to see growth, HEA and the integrity of some characters and justice for those who were under the power of the ruthless.
