A Beautiful Match, the third book in Colette Dixon’s Love at Lincolnfield series, is a well-written, emotional and heartfelt exploration of what love and family really mean.
Miranda is a labor and delivery nurse in Chicago who had been in a five-year relationship. She found out her partner, Pete, didn’t want children only after she became pregnant, and his relief when she miscarries brings a definite end to the relationship.
Carlos is an Argentinian vintner visiting Chicago to sell his family’s wine. He was previously married but, when he found out children were not a possibility, his wife left him. Big mistake! Dixon’s characterization of Carlos had me imagining Antonio Banderas. Yummy!
Carlos and Miranda meet and, while it is immediate attraction, their relationship is like the tango, with close intimate steps and long pauses. After a steamy rendezvous in Chicago, Carlos must return to Argentina. When Miranda volunteers in a clinic in Ecuador a month later, Carlos makes an unplanned trip to be with her and ends up taking her to Argentina for a visit.
In Argentina, they finally have to deal with the elephant in the room – Miranda wants a man with father potential who can commit, while Carlos wants to commit but can’t father a child. She was so focused on having her “own” baby she almost lost sight of how perfect Carlos was for her. So glad she made the right choice!
“I love you. I need you in my life, and I’ll do anything to keep you.”
The story is wonderful, and you will also enjoy Dixon’s descriptions of Argentina and the secondary characters, especially Carlos’ sister, Esperanza.
I received an ARC from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
Easy story to read. I liked how they finally came to terms about adopting and Carlos not magically producing sperm to have his own children.
Between love and desire for a child
4.5
In general, I do not like melodramatic romances, but the one is very beautiful, quite realistic, on a background of possible parenthood throughout the story.
Miranda, dropped by her boyfriend after a miscarriage, depressed, comes out for the first time at the theater after several weeks, with a friend when she meets Carlos, an Argentinean winemaker. But while she only conceives a new relationship with a baby born of this union, he is sterile and can never bring him what she wants most. He has already been married, and his wife left him for it. Having two different futures, their feelings and their reasons are opposed.

This pair tore my poor heart into shreds. Miranda and Carlos have both been badly scarred by previous relationships. Now, they’re both so determined to protect themselves that they remind me of porcupines shaking their quills at each other. When their relationship is going smoothly, they’re utterly adorable together. But when they hit their rough patches, my heart bled for them. This was a true emotional roller-coaster ride; filled with soaring highs, stomach-clenching lows, and lots of unexpected turns and detours.

Miranda and Carlos are from two different worlds. He lives in Argentina and works for the family vineyard. She is a nurse in Chicago who spends her days and nights delivering babies. They meet by chance one night when he is visiting Chicago. Their attraction is instant. What is supposed to only be a quick fling, just leaves them wanting more. How can they be together when the only thing that she really wants is the one thing he can’t give her? The problem is, they can’t stay away from each other. Will their time together cement their bond, or will it create a chasm between them that they can’t get across?
I feel so bad for Carlos because he feels like he will never be good enough for a woman since he can’t give her kids. I know Miranda wants to give birth to a child, but I got so frustrated with her because she really hurt him, even after she knew how much his former wife had gutted him. I was really annoyed that she didn’t even include adoption as an option. Carlos is just such a sweet, good person, who would do anything to help some one out, so it was very sad that he was hurting so much. I was really rooting for these two. I absolutely loved this story! It was an emotional roller coaster. I absolutely adored the ending. It was perfect.
