Four years after she set sail from England, leaving everything she most loved behind, Maisie Dobbs at last returns, only to find herself in a dangerous place . . . In Jacqueline Winspear‘s powerful story of political intrigue and personal tragedy, a brutal murder in the British garrison town of Gibraltar leads Maisie into a web of lies, deceit, and peril.Spring 1937. In the four years since she … four years since she left England, Maisie Dobbs has experienced love, contentment, stability—and the deepest tragedy a woman can endure. Now, all she wants is the peace she believes she might find by returning to India. But her sojourn in the hills of Darjeeling is cut short when her stepmother summons her home to England; her aging father Frankie Dobbs is not getting any younger.
But on a ship bound for England, Maisie realizes she isn’t ready to return. Against the wishes of the captain who warns her, “You will be alone in a most dangerous place,” she disembarks in Gibraltar. Though she is on her own, Maisie is far from alone: the British garrison town is teeming with refugees fleeing a brutal civil war across the border in Spain.
Yet the danger is very real. Days after Maisie’s arrival, a photographer and member of Gibraltar’s Sephardic Jewish community, Sebastian Babayoff, is murdered, and Maisie becomes entangled in the case, drawing the attention of the British Secret Service. Under the suspicious eye of a British agent, Maisie is pulled deeper into political intrigue on “the Rock”—arguably Britain’s most important strategic territory—and renews an uneasy acquaintance in the process. At a crossroads between her past and her future, Maisie must choose a direction, knowing that England is, for her, an equally dangerous place, but in quite a different way.

This author is one of the best writers today (I don’t say this lightly because I am a retired English professor). I relish every book.
Love Maisie Dobbs. However she made some difficult decisions that did not feel quite in character, having read previous books.
I have read all the books in the Maisie Dobbs series and find them all interesting and enjoyable to read. I especially like historical settings and insight into the culture of the times covered as well as the expertly crafted mysteries themselves
Intriguing and easy to read.
The entire Maisie Dobbs series is wonderful. The author has done an excellent job of character development of the heroine and all the cast of characters around her that follow her volume after volume. There is history, intrigue, and mystery. Excellent!
I’ll probably looking for more books about Maisie.
Part of s series, it is the story of a British woman who observes the cost of both WW1 & WW2 & the changes it creates in English society. Maddie Dobbs is a bright young woman who moves between the serving class & the wealthy society. She is also a spy for the government during this book which takes place before the English join in theSecond World …

I have always loved this author. Makes you want to read her next book
It created a nice mental picture of wartime Gibralter. Great characters.
I love the entire Maisie Dobbs series by Jacqueline Winspear. Maisie is a likeable character, albeit perhaps with a little more pride than is useful. She makes her way in the world of the first half of the 20th century, in a time and place not exactly supportive of women’s advancement or success. From her working class origins, she moves from a …
Jacqueline Winspear is a great story teller and her historical setting is well researched.
