National Bestseller On November 15, 1959, in the small town of Holcomb, Kansas, four members of the Clutter family were savagely murdered by blasts from a shotgun held a few inches from their faces. There was no apparent motive for the crime, and there were almost no clues. As Truman Capote reconstructs the murder and the investigation that led to the capture, trial, and execution of the … and execution of the killers, he generates both mesmerizing suspense and astonishing empathy. In Cold Blood is a work that transcends its moment, yielding poignant insights into the nature of American violence.

This book kept me reading way I to the night, and then wouldn’t let me sleep I was so scared! The trouble? It was true..
In real life – and death.
What can one say about a classic? This a a world-renowned, must-read book that will break your heart over & over again. You will enjoy it for what you learn, not for what happens (at least I hope not)
Still relevant.
Truman Capote delivers as only he can. Edge-of-your seat, terrifying horror. And the most frightening part is, it’s all true.
A true story written by a true master author.
How did someone as strange as Truman Capote write something so enthralling? I remember seeing him interviewed on The Johnny Carson Show, and there was nothing about him that would have made me think he’d write something with this kind of intensity and human emotion. Reading about the Clutter family reminded me of anyone who lived in the Midwest, …
I lived in Kansas when the Clutter family was killed. Capote did a great job.
I read ” In Cold Blood” yrs. & yrs. ago. I can yet remember where I was As I read it. I don’t believe after all of these decades, I have since read anything that held my attention and/or so completely felt that REAL to me. It was w/o competition & the most unforgettable book I ever “enjoyed”. It is a Must read then the rest of his other books. …
Good book. I couldn’t put it down.
The best true crime story ever!
A classic. Heartbreaking tale of one of our nation’s most horrific crimes.
One of the most well written novels every written.
A number of years ago I got into a ‘reading the classics’ mode, which, if you haven’t done, I advise strongly. There is a reason this book, among others, is considered a classic and one of the great works of American literature. Brilliantly detailed, intimately structured, and ultimately haunting. If you haven’t read this one, do yourself a …
This is a based on a real life crime.
This is far more disturbing than any horror novel…still…many years after the original crime.
If you live out in the country DO NOT read this book.
Am rereading this book for a college writing class. I admire Capote’s skill with a lengthy sentence, his attention to detail (yes, some of this is fiction but based on a true crime), and his powerful skill in weaving the story elements through time. That’s why it’s a tragic classic.
This is truly a masterpiece. Capote tells a story in a way that is fascinating but also is well researched and educational. The two killers in this book seem to me to have really brought America to awareness of the horror of sociopathic killers. One of the best true crime books ever written.
No pun on the title, but this book was chilling.
