Horrible not a black dagger book I was shocked Ms Ward wrote this
“4.5 stars” Ahmare is the perfect mix between a fighter who won’t give up no matter what and a kind, compassionate female, who gives freely of herself. Duran is an emotionally damaged, deeply sympathetic hero. An excellent story with plenty of page-turning action, as well as tender emotions that created a strong romantic connection.
LOVE THIS SERIES ALREADY HAVE THE NEXT ONE PREORDERED!
Love all JR Ward books
Because I absolutely love her Vampire series the Black Dagger Brotherhood Series. I definitely recommend reading this Series and taking a look at her other Books as well.
Prisoner of Night by J.R. Ward
Genres: Adult, Crime, Paranormal, Romance, Suspense
4 Stars
While this was a good story I didn’t feel it was up to J.R. Ward’s standards.
The first half of the book is vague on character build. You don’t really know much about either of the MC’s to feel connected to them.
You learn more about Ahmare first, but details on Duran don’t really come to play until about half way through. Once you get to this point the story starts to flow better and you start to connect more.
The action and suspense is high octane. Those parts I loved.
There is a lot of intrigue and mystery surrounding both ‘Bad’ guys. One of which is Duran’s father.
The adult romance is a slow burn and when it finally ignites it is beyond hot & steamy.
I’m not sure where Ms. Ward is going with this novella. The BDB is barely mentioned throughout. There is a very small part about them at the end.
All things considered, I have a feeling there is more to this. It felt like a foundation for spin-off and I am curious to see where it will lead in the future.

J. R. Ward’s Black Dagger books are an auto-buy for me, and this newest installment definitely delivers!
I loved the characters and the storyline, though I will say that the finale felt a tiny bit rushed. (I think I really needed to hear the hero’s POV on the climactic scene!) Otherwise, I tore through this in two days and immediately wanted to turn back to the beginning and start over again.
I’ve found that I enjoy these spin-off world books a bit more than the main storyline lately. I can’t wait to read the next installment – Murhder’s story!
Love to read JR Ward her books are enjoyable with terrific characters!!
Don’t know why it is a Black Dagger Brotherhood book other than the mention of Wrath every now and then. It was ok. This book is not one of my favorites from JR Ward.
I have not been as deeply invested in a Black Dagger Brotherhood couple since Lover Eternal. Don’t get me wrong. You are definitely reading a review from a certified fangirl. But normally from book to book , I feel invested in one character more so than the other in getting their HEA. And connecting with one solidly is not a bad thing, because JR Ward writes an entertaining adventure each and every time for this reader.
Wrath and Beth. Rhage and Mary. They have been forever my equal-on-a-pedestal-in-love-with-both. In a game of choice one to live, I’d tell you to off me because I can’t choose who I find fascinating more. Until Ahmare and Duran.
Ahmare is driven by the need to save her brother. Using the ‘weapon’ known as Duran, she’s going to make it happen at all costs. Duran finds helping her leads him on a path to final realize the revenge h dreams of. What they didn’t expect was a connection to each other. Once again, JR Ward spins a deeply woven tale that has you rooting not only for them to get the desired outcome of the quest they are on but to find a connection. I found I was captivated by the strength of character in which each individually and as a couple endured through the process. They are tested in ways that can and should break them apart. Being a part of their journey is what kept me engrossed for the entire read.
As a fan and avid reader, I hope we get to spend more time with the characters introduced here in future books within the BDB and BDB Legacy worlds. Now here comes the surprising part of my review…
There are 16 books to read and to some readers that is a daunting task. Do you start with book one and see if this is for you? Okay I vote yes. But… you know maybe you need a sample. If you don’t mind only subtle references to the entire BDB world, I would actually recommend you maybe start here. This story is a singular look at characters without needing to know backstory on how they get here or those characters involved. JR Ward gives you a complete story within their piece of the BDB world that will have you scrambling to read more.
I loved this book. I am a big JR Ward Fan and I LOVE THE BLACK DAGGER BROTHERHOOD. This book was what I needed a little shot in the arm before the mother load BBD book is released. This book was just like visiting an old friend, as soon as I opened it and started the first chapter I didn’t want to put it down. Duran well he is my hero and I love that he finally got what he needed when he met his mate. the action was non stop and it was great to see a shadow in the book too. if you love the BBD characters you will love this Novella.
The latest well written installment in the Black Dagger Brotherhood universe, but able to stand alone.
This book is great, like all the others in the series… and like all of those books, it shares this huge disadvantage: it’s never enough. Waiting for the next is very difficult.
I love J.R. Ward, the stories she creates are just amazing and Prisoner of Night was no exception. Set in the BDB would, Ahmare and Duran were both compelling characters, and in some ways I saw a lot of Z in Duran. I hope they pop up every now and again, because I would hate to never see them again.
Captivating and gut wrenching. Prisoner of the Night is an excellent addition to the Black Dagger series. A story all it’s own, but intriguing nonetheless.
Even if you’ve never read a Black Dagger Brotherhood book, and find the thought of tackling such a large series daunting, you could definitely pick up Prisoner of Night. The characters are new, the story original, and it was definitely a page turner.
This was a good story. I’m just not sure it was a good love-story, especially in such short form. The PTSD, and who knows what else, the hero Duran had to be suffering from really didn’t seem like a good starting point for insta-love. At times it felt like the relationship was pushed on him by Ahmare, and not in a good, healthy way. Other elements of the story worked well, and had this been a thriller about a rescue and revenge, it would have been great even. Now it just left me feeling uncomfortable.
Duly noted that this is supposed to be a parallel book in the Black Dagger Brotherhood world…but it is even more removed than the Legacy part of the series. That being said, I enjoyed the storyline and characters! I would like to have seen it tie in more to the BDB world that a few mentions of Wrath, lessers and the city of Caldwell. I hope the future holds more for these characters… Perhaps in the coming battle we keep hearing about!
Hidden between the violence and the struggle to survive is a love story that only J.R. Ward could tell. I have a strong dislike for insta-love stories but I think she is the only one who can write that and I not have a problem with it. She has a fantastic skill that covers up my #1 pet peeve and then weaves a story that captures my attention from the beginning to the very end. The story has heart, suspense, and just the right amount of danger that keeps you on the edge of your seat. January I usually start getting antsy for the next BDB book, and this comes at the right time to help fill that fix that I need. Ahmare was a strong female and Duran is a sexy, tormented hero to die for. Put these two together, and it’s flat-out amazing. J.R. Ward continues to raise the bar and here is her next instant classic. Grab it now! It will check every box you have.
