This book fulfills more than my expectations
Reading ‘The Healer’s Secret’, the first book of the Innocenti Saga was a most amazing experience. So, my expectations for the second book ‘The Dragonfly Grove’ were very high. I wanted to learn more about how Jennifer’s life has turned out. If and how she continued to be a healer… Well, I found all that in the sequel, what a joy to read.
But then suddenly Jennifer’s hallucinations take us back far deep in medieval times. I don’t know if I would have started to read a book situated in this era, but this time traveling was set out so well that it was interesting and amazing. We get to know the first healer of the Innocenti family, who originally comes from England, and just as the author, moved to Italy. I was totally soaked up in the story. Going back to medieval times is a great find. It was the time that witches and spells and magic and herb healing were very alive.
Helen Pryke is a fabulous storyteller. It is always important to know our past, to know where we come from, to understand our now. Jennifer went back far in the past, now she understands more, becomes a strong wise woman.
It is always nice to read Helen Pryke’s books, to read about those strong women characters. She is one of my favorite authors.
I’m a big fan of this saga and the author. This is the sequel to the Healer’s Secret and it didn’t disappoint. I was always drawn deep into the book with the excellent details throughout. It makes you feel like you are there with the characters. I enjoyed the historical facts and how it mixed into the story. It is a great representation of a strong woman and what she had to fight against.
The whole series is simply great!
The Dragonfly Grove is the sequel to The Healer’s Secret. I couldn’t wait to read it and find out how Jennifer’s story continued, and I wasn’t disappointed.
The story begins in the present day, where Jennifer is besieged by waking nightmares of a young girl running from something evil, while trying to protect her unborn child. When Jennifer realises the young girl is Agnes Innocenti, the original healer, she knows she must repeat her experiences of the year before and discover what happened in her ancestor’s past.
Jennifer goes back to the year 1348, to Agnes’s life just before the Black Death arrives in England. The story took me on a journey through medieval England and across the Mediterranean to Italy, to gradually learn the answers to all the questions from the first book.
I felt completely involved in the moving, breathtakingly exciting story of healer Agnes, set in the middle ages, and loved the way the author cleverly linked the dramatic, often tragic events to the modern-day story of healer Jennifer. Well researched and beautifully written, the author weaves a magical story full of joy, heartache, and triumph that will touch your heart and remain in your thoughts for a long time afterwards.
