Rules to be broken
4.25 Stars
I felt for Diana who was naïve & in love when she kissed who she believed to be her soul mate only to be rejected & ruined, at last she can be herself. Arthur wasn’t my favourite hero in the beginning as he was definitely under his mother’s thumb but he did ‘grow a pair’ to protect Diana. A short sweet well written book that was a very enjoyable read, I now need to read Eleanor’s story
Hearts to be mended
4.5 Stars
The couple need to find out why Lady Stanhope is so against them, there’s also Henry’s brother Nick who is slowly but surely destroying himself. Things come to a head at the house party that Arthur & Diana hold. Whilst this short story could be read as a stand alone I’d definitely recommend reading Rules to be Broken as the pair work in tandem. I thoroughly enjoyed the novella & look forward to more especially as Griffin & Winifred are back.
Winning her hand
4.25 Stars
Winifred asks her brother Griffin to help her find a husband & in turn she will help him find his spouse.
A very enjoyable novella which I read in a sitting, the story flows well & the characters are well fleshed. Trent & Winifred are very likeable, I was willing for this friends to lovers couple to have their HEA, a straight forward engaging romance my only quibble being that I wished it had been longer. I look forward to Griffin’s story
Conquering her heart
4.5 Stars
Not too long ago, Griffin Ramsey, Earl Of Amberly, thought that agreeing to his sister Winifred’s suggestion of choosing each other’s spouse was an acceptable idea. At the very least, it was worth ensuring that she would marry the one man she had always loved. However, when it is his sister’s turn to present him with the woman of her choice, Griffin realises that he might have made the biggest mistake of his life.
This was a feel good read & very enjoyable novella. Abigail was delightful & her act as the most horrid woman in England had me laughing out loud. I really liked Griffin in Winifred’s story & he was so honourable & sigh worthy. His reaction to having to pursue Abigail & then actually seeing her for herself was both funny & touching. I was a little surprised that Abigail was thrust into society only weeks after her father died surely she would have been in mourning for a year?
These are lovely novellas that make you smile & empathise with the characters. I especially like that the novellas characters are interwoven & it’s best to read them in pairs to fully appreciate them, the more books you read the more you become involved with the characters & their world. Four well written charming, endearing novellas
A great value-priced set worthy of 4 1/2 stars!
I have read all four novellas in this boxed set (books 5-8), which I either purchased and/or received as an ARC from the author. This set includes Rules to Be Broken, Hearts to be Mended, Winning Her Hand, and Conquering Her Heart. With all four novellas, Bree Wolf brings her readers well-written works with engaging characters, maybe some secrets held and/or revealed, lively dialogue, and a darn good story. Normally I tend to gravitate toward works that are more sensuous but that is not the case with Bree’s works. She manages to portray the deep emotions and feelings her main and supporting characters have or develop for one another and at the same time, tie up a reader’s emotions until the very last page is read. Highly recommend this value-priced set.
BREE SET’S THE STAGE!!!
Talk about raising the bar. Bree really brings it with this entire series. Do yourself a favor and grab yourself a copy you can’t go wrong. The characters are always strong and relatable. Their personalities play off one another with such passion that they come alive before your eyes. The scenes are graphic and paints a vivid backdrop that makes the storyline pop. You get all the action, fear, drama and suspense that holds your attention until the last word. As always Bree delivers every time. Fantastic job bringing this read to life flawlessly. Great job Bree, thanks for sharing this awesome read with us.
Every single story is an interesting read and features likable, believable characters that you find yourself cheering for. These relatively short reads are each perfect for a rainy afternoon with a hot cup of coffee or tea.
Regency at its finest! This set of books is as great as the first. Regency romance that does not disappoint!
I have separated my review into 4 parts, one for each book.
Book 5- Ruined and Redeemed
Raped and then urged by her parents to marry the rapist! That is the dilemma facing Charlotte. Kenneth, her childhood friend that volunteers to marry her, is suddenly killed in the war, leaving Charlotte without hope and temporarily insane. Instead of killing herself, she suddenly decides to kill the friend Kenneth followed into the war to protect. However, an innocent man drinks the poison and dies. Charlotte is then sent to an insane asylum, with her parents declaring her dead.
A fire at the asylum allowed Charlotte to escape. Ultimately, a stranger finds her unconscious and takes her home to be cared for by the family physician. It is against this background that the story is painted: How Charlotte regains her senses, overcomes her fear of men, and ultimately regaining her place in society.
An example of true love is held up against an example of selfish abuse of a wife, so the reader can learn to appreciate true love and not take it for granted. We see 2 women struggle with carrying a child from a man who abused them, giving the reader insight into the heartaches such women go through to try to accept and love the child, despite the father.
We see characters from several other of Ms. Wolf’s books, as they make an appearance and play a role in the story. I found this story more gripping and the characters better developed in this book than in some of the other books. There is no cursing in this Regency Romance with a HEA ending. Readers in later teens and beyond will appreciate the serious issues involved in Charlotte’s struggle to overcome her assault.
Book 6- Betrayed & Blessed
In this book, we find out why Henrietta’s brother Tristan (from “Abandoned and Protected”), did not come home for her wedding. Just as Henrietta suffered long-term effects from the abuse in their family, so, too, has Tristan. Whereas it forged Henrietta into a strong woman, determined to be able to defend herself, Tristan has allowed the verbal abuse of his uncle to lower his self esteem, and be submissive to him even as an adult, hopeful that somehow he will gain approval from this uncle.
Add a third victim of abuse, Beth, whose mother took her away from a physically abusive father and raised her on her own. Beth was told her father had died when she was young, and she never thought to question her mother about her father’s family. When Beth’s mother abruptly dies, she is left with a clue to her mother’s past and she begins her search for further information on her family. Beth turns out “normal”, as she was removed from the abuser so young.
Although abuse and its effects are an undercurrent, this book still is a romance, and does have a happy ending. Ms. Wolf has again successfully drawn in old characters and added new ones, whose own stories may well be told in future books.
This was a clean book, with no cursing (despite what one reviewer wrote) and no description of the intimacy that is alluded to. Romance readers of all ages will enjoy this book. It also brings to the fore the various lingering effects that abuse can have on adults.
I received this book as a gift. My review is my own opinion, as I think readers of Regency Romances will enjoy this book.
Book 7-Deceived & Honoured:
A farmer, turned soldier, earning a barony for his service, falls for the earl’s beautiful daughter, Madeline. What could be wrong with this picture? Only that the young beauty is determined to marry no one lower than an earl, as she feels this is her due. So, she falls for an earl, but unbeknownst to her, this particular earl is unscrupulous, desirous only of her dowry, and has ruined other young girls. Seeing trouble coming as the young debutante leaves the ballroom with the earl soon following her, our gallant baron Derek gallops to the rescue. After thwarting the earl’s advance, Derek goes searching for Madeline, finding her alone in the Library. Before he can say much to her, in comes Madeline’s aunt Odelia, announcing that due to them being alone, Madeline is compromised and they must marry. Odelia leaves to find her brother, Madeline’s father, and thus the stage is set for Madeline to marry this man, whose name she does not yet know!
Thus begins this delightful story, of the struggles of two strangers trying to cobble together a marriage. The manor Derek was given, Huntington House, is a run-down place, barely fit to inhabit. The former baron had let his home and his entire estate fall to ruin, cared nothing for the well-being of his tenants whose cottages were even worse than the manor. Derek leaves his new wife in London, as he realizes she does not want to be with him, giving her permission to live as she wishes. He want her as a wife, only if she truly wants him. He goes to his manor, where his sister & her family and his mother have already started living. After seeing the deplorable condition of the tenants, Derek begins helping them repair their homes first, doing the bare minimum to keep his house going.
Finding herself at a loss of what to do and where to go after the season is over, Madeline packs some belongings and is taken to Huntington House. Never in her worst nightmare did she think her husband’s home would be as terrible as she found it, and that her life would be without servants from this point on. Culture shock-that is what Madeline faces.
The story then shows how slowly, each person finds their way to developing a working relationship with each other, while sleeping separately, neither wanting to open themselves up to possible rejection by the other. Life goes on and they become involved in the cares of the tenants, the well-being of the animals and the others living in the household. Madeline finally finds the courage to face small fears and conquers them, building her confidence to face bigger challenges. At times, each fears the other harbors secret feelings and desires for another, which sabotages their efforts to draw close. Mistaking the comfort Derek gives to his friend’s widow for unfaithfulness to her, Madeline draws away from Derek just when they are starting to have marital relations, putting them back to square one.
Life-threatening illness in Derek’s nephew gives Madeline the opportunity to show her love for the family and strength of character to have the courage to do what needs to be done to try to save the child’s live-riding alone to London for the doctor in the dead of night. This helps Madeline to have confidence in herself and to see she does have abilities that make her have worth as a person.
One thread running through this story, is of an insecure young woman, born to wealth, who feels her only worth is measured in how well she can marry. Madeline is too young and immature to have developed any sense of self worth outside of how the ton views her. Her journey to finding herself successfully comes about as she seeks to find a place in her husband’s life. Her values, her skills in homemaking, in caring for the needs of the animals and tenants are all challenged in this story. Growth comes as a result of her being willing to change both her abilities and her values. By the end of the story we see the emergence of a competent young baroness who is willing to work alongside the farmers and their families as they work to overcome life’s hardships and problems.
Derek, on the other hand, has developed a sense of worth and competency by helping to care for his family since age 10 when his father died. Then, in the army, he further developed leadership abilities that made him stand out from among his peers. However, he still carries in his mind prejudices against those born into the peerage, thinking they all have a sense of entitlement, and do not want to get their hands dirty doing the work of the common man. Both Madeline and Derek come to a more balanced view of others, trying to see the value in each person for what he is rather than on to what rank he was born. This is a good lesson for all of us.
Although some passionate kissing takes place, it is only vaguely described and no objectionable scenes are included, allowing even younger readers to enjoy this journey of self-exploration.
Book 8- Sacrificed & Reclaimed
Edward had selfishly left Meagan and their 2 children to go fight on the continent without concern about the family he was leaving behind. Meagan had let him go, realizing that to hold him back she would certainly lose him.
Reluctant to make known the fact he had survived, although broken in body, Edward finally made his way home.
How does this couple overcome Edward’s guilt at leaving, guilt at staying away and guilt of not being the man he once was due to his injury? Guilt and self pity weigh Edward down. It is only by his wife’s insight into Edward and her love for him, that Edward can be healed.
We see the elements required in Meagan: enduring love for Edward, love for her family, an acceptance of another’s failings, and being able and willing to forgive when Edward returns home. Further, an ability to see into Edward, past his outward display of confusing emotions, to see the truth in his heart and the conflicts therein, making his outward behavior corresponding to his inward confusion. Such understanding can help Meagan express her love for Derek, her confidence in his ability to care for his family, which eventually helps him to see value in himself and be willing to take the necessary steps toward his family, to begin family life again.
A Forbidden Love Novella Boxset Books 5-8
1. Book 5: Rules to Be Broken: 5 stars
I received a free copy of the clean historical novel Rules to Be Broken: A Forbidden Love Novella book 5 by Bree Wolf and this review was given freely.
I enjoyed seeing the change in Diana from being a jealous embittered mother who ignored her son Benedict and lusted after her Cousin Rose’s husband Lord Norwood to a loving mother and a caring wife to Arthur the Earl of Stanhope.
2. Book 6: Hearts to Be Mended: 5 stars
I received a free copy of Hearts to be Mended: A Forbidden Love Novella book 6 by Bree Wolf and this review is given freely.
Hearts to be Mended picks up Diana and Arthur’s lives from where they left off in Rules to Broken but also features two new clean romances. The love stories of Henry with Arthur’s sister Eleanor and Henry’s brother Nick with Eleanor’s cousin Connie are troubled but ultimately end happily. Written in the Regency style, this novel ties together couples from prior novels, is suspenseful, contains a family scandal, has lots of well-meaning meddling family members, multiple babies, and ends with a cliffhanger.
3. Book 7: Winning Her Hand:5 stars
I received a free copy of the novella Winning Her Hand: A Forbidden Love Novella book 7 of A Forbidden Love Novella Series by Bree Wolf and this review was given freely.
Winifred and Trent’s romance is a simple and sweet romance involving a man finally having the courage to express his love after a 5-year separation and a woman who finally accepts that what she feels for her childhood friend is a strong and abiding love. Seeking the happiness her parents had, Winifred forms a pact with her brother Griffin to enter a marriage based on compatibility rather than for love. Realistic characters, some jealousy, seemly random meetings, and a cliffhanger make this an interesting and fast-paced read.
4. Book 8: Conquering Her Heart:5 stars
I received a free copy of the novella Conquering Her Heart: of A Forbidden Love Novella book 8 by Bree Wolf and this review was given freely.
Winifred and Griffin’s pact continues in this fast-paced novella with Griffin being the target of his mischievous matchmaking married sister. Winifred seeing through the facade that recently orphaned Abigail has erected to protect herself against money-hungry suitors matches Abigail with her caring if slightly clueless brother. Joined in solidarity, Abigail and Griffin make a pact of their own. I loved the fiercely loyal and loving personality of Abigail, the crotchety Grandfather, the humor evoked by the multiple conniving yet lovingly interfering characters contained in this book, and of course the happy ending.

I have read all the books in this series and have posted reviews on the individual books. Each story is a standalone, although the characters do overlap. I enjoyed all of these stories as they make for lighthearted and enjoyable reading. The novellas are all clean and can be read by any age group. I received a copy of this book as a gift and this is my honest and voluntary review.
The four novellas were a pure delight to read. Bree Wolf is a talented writer who has a knack for creating distinctive characters. I loved the way the novellas were connected so that the characters were revisited. You’ll find yourself not wanting these to end.
I originally read all of these delightful stories earlier this year and am very happy to recommend them as a box set. Each one can be read as a stand-alone and kept me engrossed and eager to read the next one. Here is what I had to say about them.
5. Rules to be Broken
I absolutely loved Diana’s philosophy of why the men were permitted to write the rules for women to follow while it was quite ok for those same men to break the very same rules and do as they pleased and get away with it.
Diana and Arthur learn very quickly that in their lives the rules are meant to be broken and that both of them could break them and they could still live happily.
She is still trying to recover from being compromised and married in haste to a friend of her father with whom she has a baby. Then her husband dies…
He has a meddling mother who wants him married to a lady of her choice. He watches as his mother interferes in his sister Eleanor’s love life and is aware of how miserable this situation is making her and is not sure what to do about it and certainly doesn’t want mother dearest to have a say in his own choice of a wife.
And so the story begins.
Once more, a beautifully written novella which can be read either as part of this series or as a stand-alone.
It gripped me from the very beginning and I had to finish it (cursing the bit of tutoring and the lift-schemes I had to stop and do) but finish it I did!
It is full of the angst of two people who were thinking they shouldn’t care for each other at all because of their circumstances while deep down they both were falling totally in love. I love the games they played, the attempts to hide their true feelings, the arrogance of his mother, Diana’s young son’s
cuteness and the bond of friendship Diana and Rose have for each other.
A very pleasing and entertaining story which I thoroughly enjoyed and highly recommend.
6. Hearts to be Mended
Eleanor and Henry are crazily in love with each other but her mother is not keen for them to have a relationship at all but won’t say why not. They try to find out and in order to see each other engage the help of friends.
BUT! ‘the truth will out’, or some such saying and this happens in a most unusual way and totally by chance.
The story itself is well written, entertaining with a mystery to solve, a love story in the making and it has its moments of joy and others of sadness too. All of this is so well told that you want to get to the happily ever after which you know will be coming up.
I am happy to say that I am a fan of Bree Wolf’s story telling and am delighted to recommend this as a quick and very enjoyable read.
7. Winning her Hand
For a novella, this sure packs a lot.
Winifred has decided that it’s time to get married and have a family before time runs out and she asks her brother to find her a husband, BUT, she is adamant that it cannot be a love match.
Trent, her brother’s friend, has been in love with her for ages but she also doesn’t want a fiery match which he would be.
So, how does one find someone that will be suitable for her?
Brilliant story, very clever theme and as usual it has been extremely well written and held my attention throughout.
I loved both of the main characters’ strengths and weaknesses, the way they teased each other and the clever way Trent went about getting her to notice his good points.
This is a beautiful story that has happy ending and as I enjoyed it so much, I am happy to recommend it.
8. Conquering her Heart
This is Griffin and Abigail’s story and tells us what his sister, Winifred, does to find him a wife – much to his dismay.
It is beautifully written (as is usual for this author) and packs a lot into a novella sized story which is full of twists and turns and mischief and shows very clearly that it is possible to go against the ‘normal’ and still have a great outcome.
I just loved Abigail’s cleverly thought out plan to not get a husband which she puts into action going against her father’s insistence that she get married very soon.
Bree Wolf has never disappointed me with her stories and this novella was yet another example of excellent craftsmanship.
I happily recommend this as a very enjoyable and entertaining box set, full of the stories which I read as an Advance Reader and the review above is unbiased and voluntarily given.
All these stories are great but I think my favorite is Conquering her Heart Winifred tries to be so logical when it comes to marriage feeling it is not a matter of love her brother believes love is what is important and he knows the man for Winifred, his friend Trent now he just has to make her see it, Enjoy!!!
