I feel bad for this rating I truly do. This story had so much potential but it felt disjointed. I was also unaware when this was presented to me that it’s more than likely the third in a series so maybe that’s why I felt lost. I have also never heard of alpha vampires or maybe I have but they weren’t marketed that way.
Tatiana and Demetri are vampires. Not just any vampires but heartmates and alphas at that. Tatiana is very strong and independent and doesn’t want the bond with Demetri. When Demetri is taken prisoner by a mad scientist demon, things start to take a turn. He is used to being the typical male but can’t figure out why Tatiana won’t act like his ideal female. They have a mystery to solve and now may not be the time to figure out their chemistry.
I liked the thought of the story . I just had a hard time following and this totally may be me. Alpha vampires are a new breed for me. I liked the idea of an enforcement agency of vampires. Everyone needs to be policed I assumed even the supernatural. I think with some polishing this could be a good story.

This is a new author for me and when I accepted a courtesy copy for my reading enjoyment I was unaware it was not first in series – What can I say I like to go in blind.
This does work okay as a standalone, though IMO it will be that much better if you start from the beginning. There are a lot of great characters within this story and I feel I would have been more vested in them if I had read the previous books.
The characters, both lead and supporting, are detailed and seem to fortify each other quite seamlessly – the author definitely provides a well-rounded cast
The storyline flows well-providing mystery and suspense that undeniably kept me vested and engaged. I had a lot of questions as I read and I believe that most would have been answered with prior knowledge had I read the previous books in this series.
I really enjoyed the back and forth banter between Tatiana and Demetri – they are a well-crafted pair
Tatiana has a past that is tainting her present and quite possibly stifling her chance at true happiness. She has a secret that if uncovered could steal her freedom – or so she believes. I greatly enjoyed the complexity of her character. She is witty with the perfect touch of snark. She is not one to tread in the whiny end of the pity pool – She is quick to take stock of her situation and base her decisions on the facts – okay fine most of her decisions – when it comes to Demetri she tends to be a bit “stifled” in her thinking?
Demetri – I have to laugh at the early description of his tree trunk legs – though by the end of the story he was all marshmallow goodness. Having walked the earth for centuries many of his beliefs are a bit misogynistic though he truly is fair of heart.
I am looking forward to reading the other books in this series.
